Makeup 101: Is Mineral Makeup For You?

imageIt’s no secret that I love Bare Escentuals Mineral Makeup. I ban myself from going in the store because I simply can’t control my credit card when in the presence of such amazing makeup. When friends need to go in I blab on and on about what they should get, to the point where sales associates consider offering me a job. Don’t worry though, I don’t actually work for a mineral makeup company so everything I’m telling you is legit; no one is paying me under-the-table (but if you are from B.E and are lookin to throw some dough my way… hit me up). Okay, so before you dismiss this as just another article advertising mineral makeup, listen up: I’m going to tell you exactly what the benefits are so you can decide if mineral makeup is right for you. There are so many things you need to know (beyond what those ladies tell you in the 3am infomercial) and you may realize that mineral makeup is the best thing for you and your punim (that’s face).

Hot In The Hive: Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothies

imageOne of the beauty world’s biggest frustrations (other than, you know, constantly having to shave your legs and pluck your eyebrows), is the concept of products made to look, smell, and sound good enough to eat… but actually aren’t edible. What a tease! In fact, one of my friends learned the hard way that the Body Shop’s Nut Butter lotion really doesn’t taste as good as the name and scent implies. What makes the Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothies slightly more tolerable than other hunger-inducing beauty products, however, despite my sudden urge to hop over to the corner Jamba Juice, is that the brush-on lip color actually contains all the moisturizing properties and conditioning antioxidants of a hydrating smoothie without the sticky-sweet fruit flavoring that would normally tempt you to lick it off your lips all day long. True, I’d have an easier time curbing my hunger pangs if the bright shades were named after inedible flowers instead of juicy just-ripened fruit, but at least I’m not tempted to eat it instead of wear it!

Price: $17.50
Who Found It: xgalexy was the first to add Clinique Vitamin C Lip Smoothie to the Hive.

Estee Lauder’s Prescriptives Says Goodbye!

imageSo many people are going to be upset when they can’t pick up any more custom color matches over at Prescriptives after January 2010. The makeup parent company Estee Lauder told WWD that the economy is the reason that they have reevaluated the line… bye-bye, Custom Blend! While the makeup will continue to be sold online while supplies last, there’s no news whether or not a comparable line will be released to at least absorb some of the customers (like me!) who adore putting on a “colorprinted” foundation. For now, I’m considering picking up a farewell bottle or two of my favorites, because this is one beauty brand that will be sorely missed! What specific brand of makeup would you miss terribly if it disappeared? Share your thoughts over at LimeLife!

Stylehive’s Stylescopes Bring Out Your Most Beautiful You!

imageAlthough everyone’s schedule is unique, we can all agree that they’re busy and hectic and chock full of errands and deadlines. Turmeric Steps Out Of The Kitchen And Into Your Beauty Kit!

imageTurmeric has jumped from the kitchen spice rack and onto the bathroom shelf! With its peppery flavor and spicy aroma, what place does it have in your skin creams and cleansers? Aside from its traditional culinary uses, the medical and cosmetic benefits of Turmeric date back to ancient times. It has the powerful ability to brighten the complexion, even out skin tone, get rid of blemishes, and also help protect skin from free radicals and toxins. It’s often used as a skin softener in Asia, mixed into a paste with milk cream, sandalwood powder and Rosewater and applied to the body. But forget mixing a home paste! Turmeric is now available in a large variety of new face and body products. Use a skin-brightening polish to take your skin from dull to radiant, or an Indonesian face mask to even out skin tone and draw out impurities. For cleansers to detox supplements and all beauty products in between – check out the slideshow for some Turmeric-based products!

Which Emmy Awards Actress Did The Matte Makeup Look Best?

imageWhen the phrase “award show” is mentioned, things that usually come to mind in the realm of beauty are “dramatic,” “high-impact” and “come-hither.” You think plump red lips, rosy cheeks, heavy eyeliner, fluttering lashes… Okay, maybe I’m thinking Old Hollywood, but still, the stereotype is often still expected on big-night red carpet events like the Emmys. However, a celeb photo hound like myself couldn’t help but notice the prevalence of neutral matte lips at last Sunday’s fete, from drama queen January Jones‘ semi-sheer coral hue to funny gal Alyson Hannigan’s peachy nude. Who knew that understated barely-there shades would be the key to shaking things up on TV’s biggest night? Whether these downplayed lip shades served to help balance other features like Mila Kunis’ smoky eyes, or simply matched an overall style like Kim Kardashian’s sexy ice princess look, these TV sirens proved you don’t need bold color or high shine to be a winner in our beauty book! Vote below on who you think looked best in her matte lipcolor. Photo Credit: PR Photos

Get Amy Poehler’s Emmy Red Carpet Hairstyle

imageFunny gal Amy Poehler looked beautiful at this year’s Emmy Awards wearing a black strapless Reem Acra gown. TRESemme Celebrity Stylist Mara Rozsak kept the attention on Amy’s neckline by creating a chic low chignon. This hairstyle will never be outdated and keeping it low and a little loose adds that element of fuss-free glam. The best part is this look only cost $15!

Get the look:
1) Apply TRESemme 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse, $5.49, to damp hair, create a deep side part, and blow dry with a round brush.
2) Curl hair with a 1 1/4 inch barrel curling iron, and spray with TRESemme Frizz Shield Finishing Spray, $4.54.
3) Pull hair back, making it tighter on one side exposing the ear, into a mid-height ponytail and wrap to form a bun. Criss cross bobby pins to secure.
4) Finish with TRESemme TRES Two Hair Spray, $4.35 to hold the look.

NYFW Backstage Beauty: Tory Burch

imageThe hair and makeup was kept fresh and pretty for the Tory Burch Spring 2010 presentation, giving her casual yet chic collection the perfect spring feel. The hair was pulled back into low ponytails and makeup was subtle yet screamed pretty young thing.” I got the chance to meet with Redken hairstylist Yannick D’Ys and MAC makeup artist Diane Kendal backstage before the show to find out exactly how they created the looks.

The Coveted Takes A Peek At Sephora’s Window Theatrics

imageI didn’t partake in any Fashion’s Night Out activities– too much temptation to spend my life savings. But this Sephora event in New York looks like it was awesome. Temptu, famous for their airbrush makeup, created living art at the Sephora on 5th Avenue, recreating work they’ve done for cinema and fashion. They crafted a variety of looks, like those from an Italian Vogue spread, Robert DeNiro’s character in Cape Fear (if only DeNiro had looked so yummy), and the movie The Stepford Wives. I’m not quite sure where I would wear numbers all over my face, but I totally would if I could find the right occasion! They really drew a crowd as they airbrushed models in the storefront windows for eight hours. They also lured tons of customers looking to get airbrushed and photographed for a mock fashion mag cover. Now that’s a good time! Check out The Coveted for the latest happenings in the fashion and beauty world!
