Live From Essen: red dot product design gala Wrap-up

Words really can’t express the excitement surrounding this year’s red dot product design awards! For The industrial design community it’s the place to be, and it just keeps getting better. On the outside it’s glitz, glamour, red carpets, amazing hors d’oeuvres, an endless stream of champagne, paparazzi, and even dancing. But that’s not what makes this night special… it’s the geniuses behind it all. 1299 to be exact. 1299 of the greatest design minds of 2012 gathered in one spot with friends, loved ones and the who’s who of design to celebrate outstanding achievements in innovation, invention and hard work.

There’s no other place like it. Let’s take a look at the highlights from this year’s event!

First things first- could there be a sexier setting? The gala was held in the incredible Aalto theater located in the industrial heart of Essen, Germany.

Here the night’s best of the best laureates were treated to an enchanting string composition performed by violinist Sakaya Shoji as well as stunning choreography in the form of Irish ballet by Essen’s Aalto Ballett company.

Joined by two of this year’s judges, Dr. Luisa Bochietto and Prof. Stefan Diez, red dot’s very own Peter Zec presented awards to the 62 best of the best winners. While this award is an notable achievement, only one team would stand to win the award of all awards: the 2012 Design Team of the Year.

As is tradition, last year’s winner, Grohe, handed down the coveted Radius award to a company that would come as no shock to everyone attending: Porsche! Michael Maur and Style Porsche drove onto the stage in the sexiest beast of a car: the famed 911. What could be more rewarding than being introduced to the audience by none other than the Volkswagen Head of Design, Walter Maria de Silva.

We laughed. We cried. But we were all ready to party! So it was time to move on to the historic Zollverein colliery, the location of the red dot museum and Designer’s Night after party. The designers were treated to a world class meal specially prepared by chef Frank Rosin.

After their sumptuous meal, everyone headed to the long-awaited party at the red dot design museum, and what a party it was. We were up to the wee hours, dancing to the success of so many creative minds, people whose only goal is to make life better for all of us.

P.S. This is not the end of it, more updates, interviews and exciting reports to come soon.

Notable Fiction

Award winners and near-winners to read this Spring

While the Huffington Post blazed the way for new media winning a Pulitzer Prize on Monday, the literary world was stunned by the board’s refusal to name a Fiction winner for the first time since 1977. They did, however, reveal the three finalists—a posthumously completed novel by David Foster Wallace, 29-year-old Karen Russell’s debut novel and a hardcover re-release of Denis Johnson’s 2002 novella. In the spirit of fostering a rich community of conflicting ideas, we’re taking advantage of their indecision to stockpile our spring reads. Here, Pulitzer’s uncrowned picks along with three titles that did snag some prestigious awards in 2011 to get you through the season.

Pulitzer Pale King.jpg Pulitzer_Swamplandia.jpg
The Pale King by David Foster Wallace

The Fiction Pulitzer is designated “for distinguished fiction by an American author, preferably dealing with American life”, and the committee notes Foster Wallace’s last work as a story “animated by grand ambition, that explores boredom and bureaucracy in the American workplace.” Published more than two years after the author’s suicide in 2008, “The Pale King“—which is actually a compilation of unfinished pages and notes pulled together by his editor Michael Pietsch—tells a deeply sad story of stagnant mundanity in a Midwest I.R.S. office, jumping to the other end of the spectrum from the pleasure bender of “Infinite Jest”. Those un-annointed in Foster Wallace’s singular prose will benefit from diving into his repertoire from here.

Swamplandia! by Karen Russell

Unfolding the wild Florida Everglades world behind the short story Zoetrope published in 2006, “Ava Wrestles the Alligator”, “Swamplandia!” marks Russell’s enchanting first go at a full-fledged novel. Between her masterful grip on protagonist Ava’s teenage narration of her life on her family’s swamp-set theme park and a commanding knack for presenting environmental, economic and societal issues against a lovably dysfunctional family dynamic, Russell is off to a resoundingly strong start.

Pulitzer Train Dreams.jpg Pulitzer-Salvage-the-Bones.jpg
Train Dreams by Denis Johnson

In just 116 pages—the expanse of one quiet afternoon, perhaps—Johnson shares the life of Robert Grainier, whom the Pulitzer committee describes as “a day laborer in the old American West, bearing witness to terrors and glories with compassionate, heartbreaking calm.” As we chart today’s uncertain path of everyday life on the brink of another kind of new frontier, it’s comforting to follow Grainier through “Train Dreams” as he faces Johnson’s beautifully drawn world with courage and vulnerability.

Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward

With the 2011 National Book Award emblazoned on its cover, Ward’s second novel represents literature’s most respected contribution for the year. The story, chosen from 315 nominees and five finalists, spans the 12 days leading up to Hurricane Katrina as seen by a pregnant 14-year-old girl, Esch Batiste. Zeroing in on the tiny moments threading through mostly tragic lives, Ward has established the lyrical, powerful voice of a master storyteller in “Salvage the Bones“.

Pulitzer-Tigers-Wife.jpg Pulitzer-Binocular-Vision.jpg
The Tiger’s Wife by Téa Obreht

Beyond the popular buzz it garnered, “The Tiger’s Wife” established credibility with Obreht’s selection as one of the National Book Awards’ 5 Under 35 in 2010 and NBA Finalist in 2011—the first author to earn such a distinction. Written primarily during her college years, the book follows a Balkan family (their exact country is never specified) through the region’s conflicts from the present day and stretching back to WWII. Conveying wisdom in her rich narrative, Obreht’s first novel promises a bright future from the prodigal writer.

Binocular Vision by Edith Pearlman

The well-established author of various story collections drove her point home with the success of her latest collection, which continues with her expert ability to weave significant feeling and cultural statements into a series of beautifully captured narratives about being Jewish after WWII. Score one for independent publishers, too—”Binocular Vision” was the first volume published by Lookout Books, christening the house by going on to earn NBA Finalist status and then winning the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Titania Inglis Fall/Winter 2012

Supple leather and Japanese plaids comprise the sleekly edgy collection from this year’s Ecco Domani winner for Sustainable Design
titania-fw12-1.jpg

The 2012 winner of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation’s coveted award in Sustainable Design, Brooklyn-based fashion designer Titania Inglis uses smartly sourced fabrics as the foundation for her thoughtful collections. Half Chinese, half Scottish, Inglis grew up in upstate New York before studying at the Design Academy Eindhoven—a school known for teaching innovation through sustainable materials—and then at NYC’s Fashion Institute of Technology. Inglis explains, “As I see it, designing sustainably means trying to make those choices with the minimum possible impact on the environment and the maximum possible benefit to society.”

titania-fw12-5.jpg

Inglis’ impeccable craftsmanship is the upshot of both extensive training and innate perfectionism. “In the end the collection was seamless,” says her Fall/Winter 2012 collection stylist, Christian Stroble. “I was very impressed with her dedication and fine eye for detail. I loved the blend of ’90s grunge with an updated minimal edge.”

In a collection that calls to mind episodes of “My So Called Life,” plaid skirts made from a recycled Japanese cotton and linen blend and vegetable-tanned leather jackets offered up a sophisticated punk aesthetic, which were accented by knee-high combat boots and jewelry designer Bliss Lau‘s beautifully constructed shoulder holsters and belts.

titania-fw12-2.jpg

We checked in with the designer after her runway show at Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in NYC last week.

What are some of the challenges involved in using sustainable textiles?

The biggest challenge is finding high-quality textiles that are sustainably manufactured. I’ve scoured the New York garment district and traveled to Tokyo and London in search of the most beautiful, low-impact materials, and when I find something I like, I’ll base an entire collection around it. This season, the collection came from the plaid I used, which is a recycled cotton and linen blend from Japan with a tiny herringbone texture, and the leather, which is a vegetable-tanned leather from France. I’ve already squirreled away my key fabrics for Spring 2013, but those are still top secret!

titania-fw12-6.jpg

How would you describe your approach to design?

I like to approach sustainable design as a challenge rather than an obstacle, so my process each season starts with an assignment I give myself. For Fall/Winter 2012, I thought back to my high school years in the ’90s, when I was the only girl at my school who refused to wear a plaid flannel shirt, and combined that era’s slouchy nonchalance with structures inspired by medieval armor to create a clean, tough, sophisticated evolution of the grunge look.

titania-fw12-3.jpg

What attracted you to Bliss Lau’s work?

It was the utterly innovative nature of Bliss’ work that attracted me, in combination with her dark, elegant aesthetic and minute attention to detail. It’s very hard to design something entirely new, and yet she’s created a body of work so unique and so incredibly beautiful that the vocabulary doesn’t yet exist to describe it—her body pieces fall somewhere between clothing and jewelry, and wearing them is a transformative experience.

titania-fw12-4.jpg

What kind of person do you see wearing your clothes?

I like that you said “person”; I definitely see my clothes as androgynous, and a lot of guys have been asking for a men’s version of the plaid button-down in the new collection. I’d love to add menswear to my line once I have the resources to expand a bit.

titania-fw12-7.jpg

The woman who wears Titania Inglis clothes is elegant, independent-minded, and practical; she chooses them for the interesting design lines, balanced proportions, and subtle details, and because they’re versatile and easy to look sharp in. When my clothes are sexy, it’s with a tough edge; and the same goes for their wearer.
