Safe storage for your digital data

iosafe-soloWe’ve written in the past about personal safes and how most of them will not protect digital data in case of fire. A typical consumer-grade safe is only effective at protecting papers for half an hour during a fire. Most safes that would protect a hard drive cost multiple thousands of dollars and are even out of the price range for many small companies.

Thankfully, this may be a thing of the past. Check out the ioSafe Solo. It is a fireproof and waterproof hard drive enclosure that can protect your data at a more reasonable price (most systems are less than $200).

The ioSafe Solo is available in 500GB/1 TB/1.5 TB hard drive sizes. The fireproof and waterproof specs are as follows:

  • Fire: 1550° F, 30 minutes per ASTM E119
  • Flood: 10′ depth for 3 days, freshwater or saltwater

We’re delighted to learn about this product and am glad someone stepped into the consumer-grade digital protection market.

Great New Videos

Skeleton Boy by Friendly Fires, directed by Clemens Habicht, production company: Nexus

Andy Bruntel has directed this frankly bizarre vid for Under the Pines by Bodies of Water (dog lovers beware….).

Ulysees by Franz Ferdinand, directed by thirtytwo, production company: Pulse Films

The video for Franz Ferdinand’s latest Ulysees (directed by thirtytwo) sees the band mooching moodily around the city with their instruments, strolling desert plains and, um, getting into tumble dryers. We’re not sure why, but it’s all quite watchable.

Close My Eyes by Sander van Doorn (featuring Robbie Williams), directed by John Major’s Daughters, production company: P for Production

Ladies jump around in this video for Sander van Doorn (featuring Robbie Williams) track Close My Eyes, directed by John Major’s Daughters.

Finally, directing team GOLD has created this music video to celebrate Obama’s inauguration later on today. The film brings together Adam Freeland’s remix of Daft Punk’s Aerodynamic with a selection of toys by artists including Dalek, Bill McMullen and Kubrick and a voiceover courtesy of retro toy Speak and Spell to create a great piece of Obamarama.

Fashion Designers Prepare for Our Bleak Future

0120bleakfashion.jpg

For a while there, it seemed as though fashion was starting to quickly solidify itself inside of bright, obnoxious colors, a la 1983. Fortunately, the economy collapsed, the happiness has been drained from nearly every industry, and now things can get back to normal. So it would seem if fashion shows are any gauge. The New York Times reports from two shows in Milan, one for Burberry and the other for Missoni, both of which seem to be trying to cultivate a look that’s a cross between cast members from Oliver! and professional pallbearers. It’s pretty gloomy. And the AP confirms this, taking in shows by houses like Prada and Dolce & Gabbana, all of which seem to have shifted to an absolute fear or color and/or joy. What does all of this mean? For starters, that things are lousy out there. But the good side is that those grey pants you wore out but never threw away will look amazing with simple cloth patches. All the better if you can learn to say “Please sir…” in a convincing British accent.

Home How To: Decorating Without A Bail-Out Package!

Many of us have resolved to spend less in 2009 and I like to think that all the post-holiday sales are working in our favor. Whether it’s scoring that perfect wool coat for 75% off at your favorite department store or marching from sample sale to sample sale to find brag-worthy items to show your friends, being smart with your money is very “in.” Many times though, we forget about shopping for our home for whatever reason, but it doesn’t mean it’s no less important. Besides, wouldn’t you want a home just as stylish as the contents of your closet? While this “recessionista” trend is in, there’s no need to exclusively shop from the ever ubiquitous Swedish home furnishing store (you know the one I’m talking about). You can still get high quality goods at a huge discount if you know where to look! Get 4 martini or white wine glasses for less than $15 at Macy’s or upgrade that bare bulb in your living room with a chic chandelier inspired by nature. To see more home bargains you’ll be proud to show off, click the slideshow.

A Sneak Peek at Frank Gehrys New Headquarters

0120gehryhome.jpg

As we reported back in early November, starchitect Frank Gehry is planning to move closer to the sea soon, once he moves his company to a new location in El Segundo. While we told you about most of the details back then, a few more have been released about the building itself, some information about the plans on how the move will take place, and most importantly, a handful of images of the new flashy new building. Here’s a bit:

The 3.53-acre campus consists of two 1950s warehouse buildings, which are being upgraded and expanded. A 50,000-square-foot main building will house Gehry offices and design studios, with Gehry Technologies and archives located within the 19,500-square-foot building next door. A trellis structure of large timber planks arranged in an offset X-shaped pattern links the two buildings, and it will be drawn into both interiors to help define the 24-foot-tall spaces.
