Where the Boys Are: Women’s Lace-Up Brogues

imageFor a couple of weeks now I’ve seen a few women here and there wearing what appears to be their boyfriends’ shoes. So I looked it up on Google, and sure enough, it’s a real thing, an actual trend for fall and winter. It makes sense in context, I guess — with all the gender-bending fashion we’re seeing now and in the coming season, shoes were bound to follow at some point. Personally, I like my shoes comfortable, so this is a welcome change of direction as far as I’m concerned. Of course, you don’t have to raid a man’s closet in order to get the look; lots of designers are doing shoes for women that are inspired by styles that have traditionally belonged to men. Check out these Christian Louboutin “Fred” Patent Leather Lace Up Jazz Shoes, cute as a button. Imagine pairing these up with a your favorite Current Elliott boyfriend jeans. Could be very, very cute if played the right way.

Hylite: Aluminum with a living hinge

0aviiq.jpg

A very cool material is Hylite, which is comprised of sheets of aluminum bonded to a polypropylene core. Why bond metal to plastic? Because once you mill off a thin strip of aluminum from either side, boom, you’ve got a metal sheet with a living hinge.

Hylite is being used to excellent effect by California-based computer accessories maker AviiQ, whose folding Portable Laptop Stand has been named a CES Innovations 2010 Design and Engineering Award honoree. Check out how it works, simple and sweet:

Add An Urban Touch To Minimalist Style With Industrial-Chic Home Decor

imageSome of the coolest room and home decor themes are also the most minimal and deconstructed. It’s a look that’s hip and has just the right amount of edge for the home. There’s a certain nonchalance about a place that looks great without appearing overly contrived. A half-finished, industrial style has a bad-boy appeal and is actually quite easy to achieve with just the right accents. Think metals – iron, steel, and chrome – and newer materials, like plastics and glass. By getting rid of clutter and adding simple furniture and unique decor, you can soon start living in your own street-savvy spot! Click on the slideshow for some great ideas on how to make your home sleek and industrial-chic!

New York Joins Montana in Returning to Good, Wholesome License Plate Design

1112nyplate.jpg

New York apparently doesn’t like it when you call another state “the greatest in the Union” as we recently had about Montana after they’d the release of their new plate design, set to hit the roads next year. And although the state would certainly never have been considered the worst in the nation, we love that they’ve decided to even abandon their one offense, that little strip up top with all that skyline and Niagara Falls business. Instead, it’s solid gold, solid navy, and a teeny tiny outline right there in the middle. What else do you need? And thus, we say that there are now two states who have redeemed themselves. Your move now, other 48.

The Dymaxion Chronofile and our ever-expanding personal digital archives

In 1917, Buckminster Fuller began to catalog all of his personal documents into the “Dymaxion Chronofile,” a chronological filing system that included all correspondence, newspaper clippings, notes, sketches, itineraries, daily schedules and other documents relevant to his personal and professional life. By the time he died in 1983, the Chronofile occupied nearly 270 linear feet of space. This record of a human life divided into 15-minute increments is now the centerpiece of the Buckminster Fuller Archive at Stanford University.

Buckminster Fuller

Whenever I think about the Dymaxion Chronofile, I find myself wondering if there exists a small subset of compulsive hoarders who are both completely functional and meticulously organized.

Although this type of record-keeping may initially seem shocking when one considers the sheer amount of paper involved, many of us might be surprised to realize that we are unwittingly engaged in the same basic undertaking in the digital realm. Today I have 97,839 emails in the archive folder of my mail client. I can easily search through all of them with just a few keystrokes and they occupy just a small fraction of the space available on a laptop hard drive that is roughly half the size of a pack of cigarettes. In fact, it is completely reasonable for me to assume that my personal digital archives will one day surpass the size and scope of Fuller’s Chronofile.

As long as we have tools that enable us to easily organize and manage our ever-expanding personal digital records, should we really worry about the overall size? I’m interested in reading what you think about this question.

Thirty Conversations on Design

Hoffman.jpeg

by Adrienne So

A video web project started by vice president and creative director of design firm Little&Company Joe Cecere, Thirty Conversations on Design taps movers and shakers in design for their thoughts. Little&Company’s clients include Target Corporation and Warner Brothers, so when Cecere sought out leading professionals in his field, he knew where to look.

Cecere asked thirty of the world’s top creative professionals two simple questions: What single example of design inspires you the most? And what problem should design solve next?

The surprising and illuminating answers make for a bite-size educational experience with appeal to both designers and laypeople. Ellen Lupton, curator of contemporary design of the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum in New York, cites the book as a pinnacle of design, symbolizing mutation, mobility and free flow of information. Greg Hoffman, global brand creative director of Nike, suggests that design could be an effective way to combat childhood obesity by attracting attention away from more sedentary lifestyle choices.

While the majority of the interviewees live in New York, Cecere seeks out design professionals from all over the world. Erik Spiekermann, a designer at edenspiekermann and professor at the University of the Arts Bremen, marvels at the invention of the alphabet and how the printing press made the mind-bending leap from handwriting to printed letters that bore little resemblance to their predecessors. Miguel Vasquez, of MASA in Mexico, reveals his awe at how Facebook attracts people from all over the world, changing how people communicate and do business.

Altogether, the conversations remove design from its pedestal and consider its effects in the real world. Simple, beautiful, functional design can do more than make objects attractive‚ it can change how people think and speak, and improve lives.

Johnny Kelly’s Olympic Spirit

Nexus director (and previous CR One To Watch) Johnny Kelly has made a new film using paper and stop frame animation – this time for the International Olympic Committee (IOC)…

The new film, Olympic Spirit, commissioned by agency Cole & Weber United, has no narrative as such – it’s more a celebration of the Olympics through bright and colourful iconography – all created by by cutting shapes out of coloured paper:

“The animation is made up of 338 individual paper collages, roughly A4 in width,” Kelly tells us of the film-making process. “Once these had been created they were photographed with a digital stills camera and then sequenced using a computer,” he continues. “The collages were put together over a period of about four weeks and I was very fortunate enough to work with Elin Svensson, who I’d worked with last year on my Seed film for Adobe CS4, and who worked tirelessly again to help create the collages with me for this film.

“This project was a lovely opportunity to engage with and contribute to the Olympic games,” adds Kelly. “Being one of the least sporty people I know – this was clearly my only way in.”
