Weegee: It’s A Crime To Take Photographs This Good…

Opening today at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in London is an exhibition of photographs by Weegee of New York life in the 1930s and 40s.

After the Opera at Sammy’s Nightclub on the Bowery, c. 1944

Weegee worked as a press photographer, though his photographs are now viewed as a mixture of art, documentary and photojournalism. Apparently his nickname (Weegee’s real name was Arthur Fellig) was derived from the word ouija, due to his uncanny ability to arrive at a scene only minutes after a crime had taken place. Consquently Weegee’s images reveal an unflinching image of life in the city that is often violent and distressing. Yet he also captured the carefree attitude of New York society life between the wars.

Weegee used the basic press photographer equipment of the time, which was a Graflek camera and blue flashbulbs, which give his work its stark graphic quality. He would develop his images via a makeshift darkroom in the trunk of his car, allowing him to deliver his freelance shots to the newspapers as quickly as possible.

Hot In The Hive: USB-Powered Eyelash Curler!

imageI know what you’re thinking — vibrating mascara, at-home airbrushing kits, and now a USB heated eyelash curler — what will they think of next?! Though I’m still convinced that mascara that moves on its own is just a recipe for disaster, I have to admit I’m pretty intrigued by this USB beauty tool, especially as a girl who is rarely without her laptop and her makeup bag. I’m already a big fan of my Sephora heated eyelash curler… but the battery’s always drained and it doesn’t have the same satisfying squeeze-and-curl action that makes for really luxe lashes. With this device, all you do is plug it in, power it on, and revive lashes pronto! So if you’re going to have an emergency stash of back-up makeup at your desk for touch-ups and work (or in preparation for post-work happy hour), this newfangled new beauty-fiend gadget may not be so far-fetched when it comes to practicality!

Price: $33.38
Who Found It: xgalexy was the first to add the Thanko USB-Powered Eyelash Curler to the Hive.

2009 Gift Giving Guide: The gift of education

In our third installment of Unclutterer’s 2009 Holiday Gift Giving Guide we’re discussing gifts of knowledge.

Does someone in your life love to learn? If so, consider the following options as uncluttered gifts this holiday season:

  • Give a classic digital education. The History of the English Language, Physics, and Calculus are just three of hundreds of courses offered digitally by The Teaching Company. Lectures from the best professors in the world are perfect for anyone who wishes she paid more attention in high school or college. When I was commuting for an hour a day, Teaching Company courses kept me sane. I greatly enjoyed doing something productive with my time on the road.
  • Take a class together. Has your wife been nagging you to go out dancing more often? Register for a ballroom dancing class together and get her a CD of practice music recommended by the instructor or a pair of required shoes to unwrap announcing the gift. Have you and your friends been talking about taking a cooking class together for ages? Sign up for a class at your local culinary school, favorite restaurant (if they do such things) or cooking store and enjoy the time with your pals.
  • Give the gift of language. You may not be able to fund an entire vacation to France for someone you love, but you can get him prepared for his dream vacation with French lessons from Rosetta Stone. They’re expensive, but incredibly effective. With more than 30 languages to choose from, you can help your gift recipient experience the world.
  • Give the gift of music. Find a local music teacher and pay for someone you love to take music lessons. If you don’t know anyone locally who teaches the instrument or your gift recipient has an already busy schedule, check out sites like Homespun Music Instruction that sell exceptional training DVDs. My husband has the Great Mandolin Lessons DVD and it is phenomenal.
  • Fund a semester. If you can swing it, help a student pay for books, housing, or tuition for a semester. The recipient will always remember your generosity.

Have you given an educational gift in the past or are you planning one for this year? Give us your suggestions in the comments. Also, don’t forget to check out our Unclutterer’s 2009 Holiday Gift Giving Guide Index Page for a listing of all the articles as we publish them.

easyJet Tries to Repair Damage After Fashion Shoot at the Holocaust Memorial

We are headed to the airport in just a second to head home for the holidays and while we want to smack our heads and ask “What were you thinking?!” we also don’t want to be put on some kind of watch list which would make travel today even more impossible, so we’ll just stick to the facts, if you please. The head smacking culprit here is the airline easyJet, who for a fashion spread their in-flight magazine decided that a good locale would be the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. Designed by new Yale professor Peter Eisenman, the concrete monument also goes by the name, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which makes it seem that much more incredible that somehow everyone involved in the photo shoot, from the photographer (the chief suspect in our book) to the models, would find going in to take some moody shots in any way appropriate. But so they did and so easyJet is now apologizing profusely and pulling copies of the magazine from all of its aircraft.

In a statement to the New Statesman, the airline said:

“easyJet profusely apologizes to anyone who may be offended by the inappropriate fashion photo shoot at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin featured in this month’s issue of the in-flight magazine.”

“The magazine is produced by INK — an external publishing house, and easyJet were not aware of the images until they appeared in print. As a consequence we are now reviewing our relationship with the publisher and are withdrawing this month’s issue from all flights.”

INK has also issued an apology on their site.

CollegeCandy Helps Find The Perfect (and Stretchy) Outfits For Your Thanksgiving Dinner!

imageThe two things I love most about fall are the food and the fashion, which means Thanksgiving is a major jackpot. I get to dress up all cute and stuff my face with turkey. It’s wonderful… for the first ten minutes. Then my stomach begins to protrude over my skintight mini and I start having a hard time breathing. Undoubtedly I end up taking an intermission, putting on my stretchy sweatpants, then heading back for seconds. But it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s possible to look cute and eat until you’re curled up on the couch in a food coma. You just have to choose your outfit wisely. I’ve combed through this season’s hottest trends and built outfits that are holiday appropriate, both in how they look and how they stretch to fit the 5 lbs of stuffing you will inevitably inhale. And I’m sure enjoying Thanksgiving dinner without the need to unbutton your pants at the table is something we can all be thankful for this year.
Click on over to our friends at CollegeCandy for details on Thanksgiving friendly outfits!
