Workspace of the Week: Working and collecting

This week’s Workspace of the Week is CLSasse’s super space:

CLSasse’s space is fun because it highlights two different collections — a cornucopia of computers and a small Superman collection. What’s impressive is that everything has a home, and everything is in its place. Additionally, it looks like all of the computers can be used without CLSasse having to sit in an awkward position. The shelving and storage perfectly fit their user’s needs. An impressive setup all around, and the two collections definitely fall within the bounds of uncluttered collections. Thank you, CLSasse, for submitting your workspace to our Flickr pool.

Want to have your own workspace featured in Workspace of the Week? Submit a picture to the Unclutterer flickr pool. Check it out because we have a nice little community brewing there. Also, don’t forget that workspaces aren’t just desks. If you’re a cook, it’s a kitchen; if you’re a carpenter, it’s your workbench.

Venice Architecture Biennale 2010: this stepped wooden pavilion by Irish studio dePaor Architects is on show at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Called 4am, a sheet of pleated linen covers the walls and ceiling of the scented softwood frame.

Visitors walk up the steps of the pavilion to a half landing, only to descend almost immediately.

The project was presented in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in the Giardini of Venice.

The following information is from the architects:

dePaor architects present a folly in pleated linen and lavendered softwood, called “4am”, in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in the Giardini of Venice. The project constructs a liminal space, between two bespoke subject objects, as a domestic shadowplay.

‘From this point on I came to regard architecture as the instrument which permits the unfolding of a thing’ A. Rossi, ‘A scientific autobiography’

The square footprint casts the shadow of Adam’s house in Paradise. A square plan is an economical speculation beyond the vernacular, which is difficult to extend. The approach is either oblique or flat and dictates the site. A cut pyramid roof denies the gable and the small politics of front and back.

4am by dePaor architects

Reduced continuity between inside and outside multiplies the encounter between here and there. The tactic and strategy of servant and served plot the room plan. At the half landing, nothing happens.

’Transformed and displaced images, impressions, occurances which have moved me deeply (often without my knowing it), forms which I sense are closely associated with me, even though I am incapable of identifying them, which makes them all the more troubling to me.’ A. Giacometti, The Palace at 4 am

4am is staged between hylo and hedra, a shade and a stone after Dürer’s Melancholia I of 1514. At 4am the air duct fouls the upholstered dogleg staircase, which ascends to descend at the fire escape of the Palace. The planed and lavendered 2” x 4” softwood cribbage is glued and screwed at 400 mm centres. Beneath the transoms, the pleated 600 thread count linen closets the lambswool treads of the house at 4am.

‘The wardrobe is filled with linen. There are even moonbeams which I can unfold.’ A. Breton, ‘Revolver aux cheveux blancs’

Stick insects

Brighton-based designer Kyle Bean has just uploaded some remarkable matchstick craftwork to the Feed section of CR. Shown above is his dragonfly.

More of his entymology-inspired marvels can be viewed here.

Those playing close attention may remember Kyle from last year’s cardboard chronology of mobile phone development (which we also spotted on Feed) and a window display for Selfridges this summer.

Recession Chic – Keep Skin Flawless With SPF For $25 Or Less!

imageWith the recent time change, it now gets darker earlier than ever! But don’t let the dusky days and chilly winds fool you! Skincare and proper moisturizing is especially important in these colder, dryer months, but a dose of SPF is still just as needed. Harmful UV rays are present even when the sun is hidden and SPF helps protect our delicate dermis from them, as well as prevents fine line and wrinkles that nobody wants at any age!

Look for face and body moisturizers that will relieve us from wind chapped skin, but also provides a good dose of SPF (at least 15!). Plus, the great thing is that applying liberal amounts of SPF is an easy and cheap way to keep skin looking smooth, fresh and flawless with many options at $25 or less!

Whether you’re looking for a lighter option for just a quick burst of moisture, or a heavy cream to help replenish thirsty skin, we’ve found a bunch of options to suit all needs, all under $25! Click on the slideshow!

Prince Charles’ Foundation for the Built Environment Responds to Criticism

0615princewins.jpg

This writer has finally return from the wilds of New England to a, strangely, much warmer Chicago. An oh is there much to catch up on, so let’s get right into it. First things first, following our post about the reaction to Prince CharlesFoundation for the Built Environment stepping in to offer their services in place of the now defunct government agency, Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (which was dismantled as part of the UK’s sweeping cuts to try getting their finances in check), the Prince’s organization was kind enough to get in touch with a statement from their side, attempting to get the story in check and put their side out there (they also sent letters out to places like the The Guardian). We publish here, in full, the statement by the organization’s chief executive, Hank Dittmar:

“The coalition government has had to take some difficult choices in the past weeks, and one of these was to cut DCMS funding to the Commission on Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE). CABE is the successor body to the Royal Fine Arts Commission, and identifies itself as the government’s design adviser. It is important that design quality not slip in the wake of this decision. While CABE’s Chair Paul Finch and Chief Executive Richard Simmons have been bullish about the body’s continuing role, the removal of a large chunk of its funding does provoke some thought about ways to deliver its primary function of design review.”

Designers Accord NYC Town Hall: Reflections and Photographs

nyc-da-collage-1.jpgWritten by Nepal Asatthawasi
Images by Natalia Arg&#252ello and Colleen Rae Smiley

The theme of the Designers Accord Town Hall on October 28th, 2010 - organized by interactive design studio More Than Us and design entrepreneurship non-profit NYDesigns and held in the gallery space of the former in Long Island City, NY - centered around "Designs + Sustainability + Profitability." The speakers were given a pretty wide berth on what they could address between those lines. Moderator Neil Chambers, a green building expert, Treehugger blogger and author of the forthcoming book Urban Green: The Future of Architecture, captured it best in stating that "Green issues, design issues, money issues and their intersections are going to give us a good idea of what business will look like in the future."

What Wood You Say

Custom wooden messages by Chicago artist Sighn
woodsay3.jpg

As if his ambitious ITSOK project—hand-cutting one million wooden ornaments with the slogan “It’s OK”—wasn’t enough, the aptly-named artist Sighn is putting the creativity in your hands with his new project What Wood You Say. For a limited time, Sighn will carve out your favorite saying or wisdom-nugget for a tailormade art object or personalized gift.

woodsay1.jpg woodsay2.jpg

Sighn put it simply, recently explaining, “I’ve been getting requests for a long time, that I haven’t been able to make time for. This concept standardizes the production, making it easier for me to create custom pieces for people. I’ve also been doing some larger paragraph pieces for collectors, and have really gotten the font/way I make it down pat.”

woodsay4.jpg

He will be accepting orders for his hand-crafted commissions through November and December 2010. Each signed and dated work sells for $5 a character (with a 50 character maximum) from Multi Polar Projects. To see some of Sighn’s more conceptual typographic works, check out his woodcuts at Allegoric Space.
