Rizoma Metropolitan Bike

Unparalleled style melds with cutting-edge technology in Rizoma’s Metropolitan Bike, a stunning work of industrial design that commands attention. Eschewing traditional design cues, this bicycle removes the common seat tube and sweeps the down-tube seamlessly into the chain-stays, which gives way to a frame that is sleek and sinuous. In line with the maintenance-free concept for urban bikes, the Rizoma bicycle uses a belt-driven transmission, which eliminates the use of any grease and chain replacement while allowing the rider to switch between a single-speed or fixed gear setting. The frame, made of monobloc carbon fiber, is complimented by the pedals, handlebar and saddle made from billet aluminum giving the bike an impressive weight of only 17.5 pounds. Truly a work of inspired art, Metropolitan Bike bridges the gap between design and performance.

Carafe Un Verre

Playful and engaging, Claudio Colucci’s Carafe Un Verre offers a unique take on the classic wine jug. As if placed by magic inside the container, a wine glass rises from the base to create an interesting sight. Depending on how you fill it, the carafe’s inner glass may look as if it is full, or, make it fuller and watch the glass become submerged. A unique gift for the wine enthusiast, the carafe is meticulously hand crafted and mouth blown from a single piece of glass, making no two identical. Originally released in 2001, the striking design has been re-released. Made in France.

Luminaire Holiday Gift Guide Latva Wall Mount Coat Rack Dezeen
Latva Wall Mount Coat Rack

Latva Wall Mount Coat Rack

Inspired by the abstracted form of trees, Finnish designer Mikko Laakkonen’s Latva Wall Mounted Coat Rack is an innovative and functional accessory. The Finnish word for treetop, Latva’s modern design resembles the shrubbery and forests of Finland and adds texture and function to wall surfaces from the entryway to the bedroom. Made from steel rods that have been welded together, the coat rack is an expressive approach to clothes storage. It is a contemporary product with an unique appearance yet remains a simple and intuitive way to hang coats, bags, or other objects. Functional as a clothes rack, the Latva coat rack also remains a beautiful sculpture when empty.

Mag Container Desk Set

Beautifully crafted by artisans from Tokushima, Japan, Nosigner’s Mag Container Desk Set is comprised of wooden stationary boxes that magnetically connect. Veneered in either Walnut, Tamo or Japanese Quince wood and designed in shapes of 30-degree increments – an equilateral triangle, a square and rhombus – the seven boxes freely come together in harmony. With attention paid to all details of construction and form, the boxes feature mitered edges and mitered lids which give the sense of a monolithic object. The variety of shapes and volumes create useful storage for the desk whether holding pens and pencils or paperclips and paper. With a rich cultural background, the Mag Container Desk Set is the result of a collaboration effort between traditional craftsman, natural material native to Japan and contemporary design. The set is packaged in a balsa wood box that perfectly fits the containers.

Luminaire Holiday Gift Guide Module Two Whiskey Glassware
Module Two Whiskey Glassware

Module Two Whiskey Glassware

Inspired by the glass cutting techniques both artisanal and mechanical, Thomas Jenk’s Module Two Whiskey Glassware have a look and feel which compliment the tradition of single malt whiskey distillers. Comprised of a set two tumblers and a decanting carafe, the design features opposing spiral profiles cut into the crystal allowing them to mesh together and rotate, resembling interlocking gears. Following the centuries-old tradition of Bohemian handmade cut crystal and 20 years of glass machinery and manufacturing, Bohemia Machine’s products blur the boundaries between classic handcrafted techniques and sophisticated glass cutting. Sold separately, the tumblers and decanter compliment each other not only in design and motif but in function as well, adding depth and sophistication to the ritual of drinking.

Pieces Of Time Wall Clock

Creatively using material as the driving force of its design, Ding 3000’s Pieces of Time Wall Clock features 12 pie-shaped wood inlays as a means to tell time. By creating 12 sections, the natural graining of the rich ash wood creates an interesting overall texture and is accented by the metal hands, which are painted in a choice of three colours. The 12 sections coordinate to the standard clock but require no graphics to tell time and instead the difference in graining from each piece distinguishes the hour and minute. The Pieces of Time Wall Clock is produced by Discipline, a new Italian design brand, whose identity is strongly marked by the exclusive use of natural materials combining them with emotion, originality and sustainability.

Pieces Of Time Wall Clock

Polly Necklace

A simple yet sophisticated twist on the Polly Glass necklace, the Polly necklace is further graced with a large, translucent ball of glass that rests on three strands of Polly Glass. Individual glass rings are strung together to make the solid, cylindrical form that defines the strands. Handmade and assembled in the Murano studio of Marina and Susanna Sent, the Polly necklace challenges the traditional bounds of glassmaking with a unique application of glass in one or two colours. Interesting proportions appear throughout the piece as slim slices of glass merge into larger blocks of colour. With grace, intrigue, and a dash of whimsy, the Polly necklace is an attention-grabbing piece for any chosen setting.

Shoehorn

Mysterious and sculptural in form, Nendo’s expertly-crafted solid wood shoehorn for Japanese artesian wood-manufacturer Maruni does not reveal it’s true function until you interact with the object. As the name suggests, shoehorns were first made by carving animal horns; the shearing motion of this shoehorn pays homage to its origins. The piece consists of two parts, held together by an embedded neodymium magnet. The functional part of the shoehorn can be easily separated from the weighted base with one hand. The item is carved from a single block of maple to preserve continuity of the wood grain.

Luminaire Holiday Gift Guide Mag Container Desk Set
Mag Container Desk Set

Tongue Glass Dish

A minimal and straightforward piece, the Tongue Glass Serving Dish manifests rhythm and volume uncommon in serving items. This original serving tray, subtle in appearance, is ideal for tasting grand gourmet during galas, soirées or even informal rendezvous. Italian designer Eraldo Marini experiments using sinuous shapes, clean and linear in concept, to announce a dual use for complementing any meal with this handmade object. The smaller side in the Tongue Glass Serving Dish ensembles the ideal shape for garnishes of herbs or seafood like shrimp. The wider surface, instead, is perfect for the main course and can be served with an array of diced foods.

Tree Vase

Through a dedicated exploration of nature realised in subtle form, Vanessa Mirtrani’s Tree Vase offers balance and transparency while hosting a tree like a pearl in its shell. An organically blown-glass form is indented with a bulbous chamber that allows for a small tree to be planted within. The end result is an enchanting mix of nature and design that is based on clean lines and organic forms. Standing over 12 inches tall, the vase adds interest and life to interiors. The mouth-blown production of the vase creates a unique and one of a kind object.

Optical illusions created by spinning marble disks

Dezeen promotion: designer Raffaello Galiotto has created patterned marble disks that blur into new shapes when spun fast enough for Italian brand Lithos Design (+ slideshow).

Optical illusions created by spinning marble disks by Raffaello Galiotto for Lithos Design

The Opus Motus installation features a set of wheels, each formed from a mosaic of coloured marbles.

Optical illusions created by spinning marble disks by Raffaello Galiotto for Lithos Design

These geometric layout of the disks can be seen when the pieces are still, but once the 120-centimetre wide wheels are rotated at a certain speed the colours blur together to create circular patterns.

“This particular illusion is the combined result of three factors: the rotation speed, the design that determines the arrangement of the elements at a specific interval, and the light source,” said Galiotto.

All six types of marble used come from different countries and include Verde Giada from China, Travertino Rosso and Travertino Giallo from Iran, Bianco Thassos from Greece, Nero Marquinia from Spain and Azul Macaubas from Brazil.

Colours and shapes of the segments were chosen after research into which would create the best illusions.

The disks are raised off the ground on stands and are spun by hand using counter-weighted levers on one side. For further details about the project visit the Lithos Design website.

The Moving Colours of Stone

Playful, passionate, hypnotic, colourful.

Opus Motus is the new scenic stone design installation by Raffaello Galiotto in conjunction with Lithos Design, the result of a study on the natural colours of stone combined with movement.

Optical illusions created by spinning marble disks by Raffaello Galiotto for Lithos Design

Six gaudy mechanical vertical spinning tops (120 centimetres in diameter, two centimetres thick and 200 centimetres high) featuring an inlaid marble circle: when activated by a lever, it begins to spin progressively faster, the colours of nature merge together, amalgamating and forming other unprecedented shades. The figures will open up in a majestic and thrilling crescendo: an explosion of colours and shapes reveal to every onlooker unique and surprising optical effects.

Optical illusions created by spinning marble disks by Raffaello Galiotto for Lithos Design

Around the world in six colours

The starting point of the study behind the conception of Opus Motus are six types of marble among the most prestigious and charming, sourced from the four corners of the globe, from East to West: Verde Giada from China, Travertino Rosso and Travertino Giallo from Iran, Bianco Thassos from Greece, Nero Marquinia from Spain, Azul Macaubas from Brazil.

Optical illusions created by spinning marble disks by Raffaello Galiotto for Lithos Design

All the colours and geometric structures used for Opus Motus were purpose-designed based on the RGB additive model according to specific optical and chromatic effects. Thus the wealth of colours, which is already quite evident, proves to be even more surprising when movement transforms them.

Stone and I

As in other projects, with Opus Motus Lithos Design and Raffello Galiotto investigate stone as a natural element and thus intimately close to man: for this reason, the interaction with the public and their active participation is especially important. The Opus Motus circles can be activated manually with a simple lever-mechanism. The various colours of the marble tesserae come apart through the rotating movement revealing new and impressive shapes and colours to the observer.

My Playful Marble Inlays by Raffaello Galiotto

This research was inspired by the opus sectile, the old art of creating marble inlay designs: the ancient marble cladding characterised by mid- and large-size slabs sometimes salvaged from existing works, to be shaped and recomposed in complex geometries. Today my intent is to set into motion and play with the effects that the dynamics and our perception of colours have to offer. The result is the chromatic sum of the various lithotypes, each characterised and selected for its particular colouring as assessed by the RGB (Red Green Blue) composition indicated by the trichromatic colorimetric system.

The dynamics of these inlaid and rotating marble disks, with their consequential “perceptive overlapping”, mixes the colours by summing them in a sort of “stone metamorphosis” so as to produce new stones with surprising colours.

Optical illusions created by spinning marble disks by Raffaello Galiotto for Lithos Design

Even the design of the composition, subject to the kinetic effect of the rotation, is deconstructed and then reconstructed in a new arrangement.

In addition, a third effect – an optical illusion – can be perceived as the various elements of the marble design apparently move in a disjointed rotatory motion. This particular illusion is the combined result of three factors: the rotation speed, the design that determines the arrangement of the elements at a specific interval, and the light source. The artificial light source, which is also stroboscopic, together with the perceptive capacity of our eye, triggers a consequential clockwise or counter-clockwise effect.”
With Opus Motus, after 3D experimentation, Lithos Design explores a new form of expression to broach a new and unexplored territory in the world of stone colours. Founded on an in-depth knowledge of stone materials, of their sources, of the ability to work them through dedicated and sophisticated industrial systems and significant investments in Research and Development.

Piet Zwart Institute – Master of Interior Architecture & Retail Design [MIARD]

Open for Applications: Deadline 31 January 2014

Welcome to the Master of Interior Architecture & Retail Design [MIARD] at the Piet Zwart Institute – an international postgraduate programme that is part of the Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam University, located in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The accredited small-scale programme is full-time and structured over two years.

Work by Piet Zwart Institute students

At MIARD, we view the production of the interior as a multidisciplinary practice. Our programme is motivated by a design-research methodology that views interior architecture as an applied synthesis – integrating critical design practice, history, theory and technical skills through both digital and analogue means, specialised modules and self-directed research on the basis of a bottom-up strategy towards learning and innovation. We investigate making as a research and design process by mixing parameters, such as strategies and systems, techniques and tools, materials and technology, as well as other relevant and unexpected programmatic and cultural issues. As the practice of interior architecture continues to mature, we examine its performance and potential in the built environment at various scales and conditions to shape and advance the future of cities, neighbourhoods, buildings and their spaces, and for the communities and people that live in them.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

Our students are trained to excel as a new generation of designers. Projects are researched in a dynamic atelier setting with highly equipped facilities working together with a diverse faculty of established architects, interior architects, designers, scholars and other specialists. Entrepreneurial practice and networking is encouraged throughout the programme to support and launch a student’s design career. Intrinsic to this Masters is a specialisation in Retail Design.

Based in Rotterdam, a dynamic European capital of architecture and design, we plan projects directly with and for the city and local affiliations, as well as actively participate at well-known international design platforms. We offer public events in the form of lectures, exhibitions, field excursions, and interdisciplinary workshops. Our students have access to extensive university and outside resources, fostering collaborative opportunities with specialists from peripheral disciplines.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

Programme approach

MIARD situates itself firmly in applied-research, critical reflection and the professional field of interior architecture. It operates from the point of view that an educational master’s program must be adaptable to a variety of external forces and should resist institutional idleness.

We aim to foster graduates who are experts in the field of interiors and to excel as designers. A designer whose practice can modify to cultural, technological and industry changes and set precedents for new and innovative methods of operating. We work with the reality that the profession of the interior architect is a young practice, historically framed between the disciplines of architecture and product/furniture design. As our discipline matures, the programme plan is to contribute to its emerging identity as a relevant and necessary profession with its own theoretical, historical and research policies.

Work by Piet Zwart Institute students

Making further defines the MIARD design approach. It is rooted in the position that interior architecture is about making places in the material-physical world and that interiors and its constituents (analogue or digital) play a significant role in forming the identity and logics of the built environment. We investigate making as a bottom-up approach to the creative process and material innovation. This approach allows students to acquire a diversity of essential, advanced and inventive skills as designers.

We stay involved and contribute to the professional field by working with noted and award-winning international staff and guest tutors. The program participates at national and international design events, conferences, competitions, and we host an active public lecture series throughout the academic year. Current students’ and alumni’s work have been presented at international design and architecture platforms, such as Milan Design Week, Dutch Design Week, Sunlab, TENTLondon, and their design projects have received extensive international press recognition with publications in Domus, Frame, Dezeen, and Designboom, among others.

Altered Appliances by Piet Zwart Institute students

Consequently, the interior architect needs to be someone who shapes, informs and advances the discipline and it’s meaning through critical and meticulous analysis of the role of the interior and its conditions in contemporary society, and furthermore he or she needs to understands the scope and potential of the interior’s role in a larger social, political and historical context.

Core teaching staff, visiting tutors and guest lecturers

Ruth Baumeister, Bart de Beer, Herman van Bergeijk , Jan Boelen, Sander Boer, Silvio Carta, Amélia Desnoyers, Bob Dinwiddy, Gabriella Fiorentini, Nuno Fontarra, Ulf Hackauf, Deborah Hauptman, Kai van Hasselt, Lisa Hassanzade, MarkDavid Hosale, Jos de Krieger, Maartje Lammers, Edwin Larkens, Sang Lee, Marta Male-Alemany, Michiel van Malenstein, Ilaria Mazzoleni, Lutz Mürau, Cristina Murphy, Yukiko Nezu, Mauro Parravicini, Brian Peters, Frank Schoeman, Gerrit Schilder, Tanja Smeets, Catherine Somze, Alex Suarez, Eline Strijkers, Aynav Ziv, Cristina Murphy, Mauro Parravicini, Frank Schoeman, Eline Strijkers, Robert Thiemann, Füsun Türetken, UXUS, Thomas Vailly, Dries Verbruggen, Francesco Veenstra, Robbert de Vrieze, Petar Zaklanovic.

Work by Piet Zwart Institute students

Thematic design projects

Over the course of two years, students will take four Thematic Design Projects that are the core of the curriculum. These projects explore and open-up themes relevant to the field of interior architecture and other related and contemporary forms of design practice. One of four of these main design projects will be dedicated to the specialisation of Retail Design.

Thematic Design Projects are lead by either a core tutor, a team of core tutors, and/or guest tutors, who come from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds. Whether an architect, designer, interior designer, artist or retail expert these specialists offer advanced insights into contemporary design practices and issues relevant to the professional field.

Work by Piet Zwart Institute students

The Thematic Design Project structure offers students a framework for reflection, discussion, joint research and production. In other words, the particular selected theme serves as a matrix for exploring and scrutinising specific interior and built environment practices and broader design challenges. This module aims to develop the students’ understanding of their work in relation to others in the professional field and to help them define their design practice/profile within a broader cultural, technical and social context.

Complementary courses, public events, excursions and guest lectures are integrated with the design projects each trimester to provide historical, theoretical, technical, material and industry knowledge, skills and expertise.

This year Luminaire will be presenting the Flow(t) chandelier. The designer, inspired by the colours of the Venetian lagoons reflecting the city lights, produced the chandelier embodying the beauty of the city world and its fantastical reflections in the lagoon. This poetic imagery and interpretation inspired Luminaire to include it in its third instalment of Design+World, an opportunity to showcase good design interpreted through different cultural approaches and mindsets.

Nao Tamura’s quest to break with conventions brings us a new mindset and provides a unique and refreshing point of view. During Art Basel, Tamura’s contemporary chandelier will create a sculptural display of lighting set in play with the crystal collection also in exhibit.

We invite everyone to come and see the Flow(t) at Luminaire Lab, and experience Nao’s uncanny ability to find the emotional connection between her design and the audience.

POP Stars

For discovering the coolest new inventions to make a splash on the hospitality design scene, look no further than the Sleep Exhibition. Nearly a third of this year’s participating companies will be showcasing their products and services for the first time at Sleep, including those from Hong Kong and America as well as across Europe. One of these, The Modern Garden Company, is launching its delightful “Adagio” rope-swing seat and a range of contemporary upholstered outdoor furniture. Returning for the seventh year, headline sponsor GROHE will exhibit its beautiful Grandera collection as well as debut a pioneering Water & Energy Audit service for hoteliers.

Located upstairs on the Gallery level, this year’s new Tech Hub feature is the place to see cutting-edge examples of how technology is expanding the possibilities for hotel design. Boxbuild, the driving force behind the award-winning Bloc Hotels, is working with Sky and Samsung to showcase how their integrated technologies can create state-of-the-art hotel experiences. Guests’ personal smartphones can be used to streamline their stay, starting with the initial booking and then throughout their visit for check-in, as a room key, adjusting the window blinds, dimming the lights, fine-tuning the temperature, setting a wake-up alarm, and as a remote control to select Sky HD in-room content on Samsung HD TVs. Optionally, guests may opt to use wall-mounted Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 tablets to customise their rooms.

USM Haller System at Luminaire Lab

USM Haller System

Dezeen promotion: configurations of a flexible modular shelving system designed in the 1960s by Swiss architect Franz Haller are currently on display at design brand Luminaire‘s exhibition space in Miami.

USM Haller System

Haller practised during the second half of the twentieth century and was a member of a group of architects that became known outside Switzerland as the Solothurn School.

USM Haller System

As well as a wide array of building projects, in the 1960s he designed a storage system made up of ball joints, tubes and panels for modular furniture brand USM.

USM Haller System

Modules of the Haller System can be stacked to fit a multitude of spaces, then disassembled and rearranged if necessary.

USM Haller System

Compositions of the units are being exhibited until 24 November at the Luminaire Lab, 3901 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida.

For more details about the USM Haller System check out the Luminaire website.

Luminaire sent us the following information:

USM Haller System – Simple Versatility

Swiss timeless design strips away the unnecessary; there is a purpose for each component, and there is no need for the superfluous. That is exactly what USM offers. The Swiss firm bases its long-standing success on the premise that design should be adaptable and flexible, but never give up quality in the process.

USM Haller System

The USM Haller modular system, named after the Swiss architect Fritz Haller that co-created the furniture in the 1960s alongside founder grandson Paul Schaerer, is carefully proportioned and can be configured to fit any home or office space of your imagination. The key of the system is not only its simplicity of design, but also the ease with which it can be assembled, disassembled and reconfigured. The classic design is a manifestation of the company’s ethos – that being true to its environment a design will be timeless, relevant, and conscientious.

USM Haller System

All pieces are made up of three basic elements: a ball joint, connecting tubes, and panels. USM Haller’s pioneering system has revolutionised the way open space solutions can be presented. With clearly constructed lines and unparalleled workmanship the USM Haller system defines the space, but never overwhelms it – and the panels can provide a much-needed pop of colour.

USM Haller System

Inspired by USM’s ideology that the countless possibilities of each system will enrich daily life, Luminaire is setting up an exhibition to highlight the systems inspiration, parts, and modularity. From October 28th until November 24th, Luminaire’s Design District location, Luminaire Lab, will be displaying an inventive configuration of the systems true to the innovative spirit of USM.
