The information below is from Tudor:

TUDOR GRANTOUR

The new watches for 2011 are the fruit of a studied stylistic redefinition of the brand. They are the perfect embodiment of its resolutely modern and sophisticated identity, which is founded on a subtle balance between style and technical performance. TUDOR has become an icon of retro chic style, a seductive expression of form and function rooted in supreme reliability.

TUDOR GRANTOUR

This year, TUDOR is giving a new dimension to the Grantour line, its collection devoted to passion for motor sports, by redesigning its Grantour Date and Grantour Chrono models and introducing a new model : the Grantour Chrono Fly-Back. This most recent addition to the collection allows consecutive time intervals to be measured rapidly thanks to its on the fly chronograph reset and instant restart functions.

With the same 42 mm case as the Grantour Date and Grantour Chrono models, this new model is equipped with a Fly-Back pusher that has a red marking. The small seconds hand counter at 9 o’clock is set in a background motif reminiscent of automobile transmission belts. The Grantour Chrono Fly-Back model is available in steel and in a combination of steel and 18 ct pink gold, a first for the TUDOR brand.

All the models in the Grantour line are equipped with bistable pushers that are lockable at one eighth of a turn, and satin-finished streamlined lugs that have a distinctly technical look. Other features such as the new bevelled hour markers and the flange with minute markers are among some of this year’s enhancements to the Grantour Date, Chrono and Chrono Fly-Back models.

The Grantour Chrono and Grantour Date further assert their sporty flair and noble lines with their new 42 mm cases and refined features.

The Grantour Date, Chrono and Chrono Fly-Back models are available with a satin-finished three-piece link steel bracelet with a polished centre piece, or a sporty leather strap with large or micro-perforations and a folding clasp with a new safety catch.

Laufen Swiss Architecture tour

Dezeen_Laufen tour_1

Dezeen promotion: last week, Dezeen attended an architectural tour of Basel and Zurich organised by Swiss bathroom brand Laufen that included a trip to their concrete showroom designed by Nissen Wentzlaff Architects.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_2

The tour featured viewings of buildings by established Swiss architects including Herzog & de Meuron and new projects by upcoming practices such as EM2NStump & Schibili and Buchner Bründler.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_3

You can see photos on our Facebook page from Basel and Zurich and a podcast featuring interviews with many of the architects will appear on Dezeen soon.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_13

The Laufen Forum sits alongside the company’s headquarters and acts as a showroom and visitor centre.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_4

Its curved exterior form was inspired by one of Laufen’s most popular product ranges and was cast from concrete in a similar way to the production of ceramics.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_5

The interior of the Forum is designed to encourage a flow of movement, guiding visitors through the display of products before returning them to the entrance via a sweeping staircase.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_6

The building is almost entirely windowless but the central events area is lit by skylights punched into the roof.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_9

The tour also included a visit to the production facility on the same site as the Forum and headquarters, where the company has been producing wash basins, bidets and toilets for almost 120 years.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_8

The production of the pieces still involves many manual processes and a thorough understanding of the nuances of the material.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_10

Laufen collaborates with many leading designers on its product ranges including IlBagnoAlessi One (above), designed by Stefano Giavannoni, which features a wave-like form washing over the shelving unit.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_11

The Living Square collection (above) by Stuttgart designer Andreas Dimitriadis of Platinumdesign has a shallow basin and sharply defined edges that require precise moulding.

Dezeen_Laufen tour_12

The Palomba Collection (above) by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba has recently been expanded to include a double-basin version featuring asymmetric ‘fingerprints’ sunk into a 1600mm flat surface.

Kapilux by Okalux

Kapilux by Okalux

Dezeen promotion: Kapilux glass, manufactured by German firm Okalux, contains tiny tubes to reduce glare and transmit light deep into a room. It was recently used on Steven Holl’s Cité de l’Océan et du Surf in Biarritz, France.

Kapilux by Okalux

Two translucent glass boxes in the wave-shaped landscape of the museum contain a restaurant and kiosk, and were clad in Kapilux to provide insulation, protection from the sun and deep light penetration into the basement rooms.

Here’s some more information from Okalux:

Undulating Architecture

Museum of Oceanography and the History of Surfing in Biarritz designed by Steven Holl Architects using KAPILUX from OKALUX

Kapilux by Okalux

The world-famous seaside resort Biarritz located on the Atlantic coast of France is one of the most popular destinations in Europe for surfing and windsurfing. Most of the coastal region is reserved for the sport; making it an ideal location to build an interactive museum dedicated to the biotope of the ocean and to the sport of surfing.

Kapilux by Okalux

At first glance, the “Cité de l’Océan et du Surf” with its unconventional, dynamic design, appears to be a part of the landscape. Swerving ramps rise out of the ground like waves making the buildings seem to be one with the topography.

Kapilux by Okalux
Glass cubes rest in this constructed landscape like boulders, underscoring the special character of the building design especially at nightfall.

Kapilux by Okalux

The interior of the new building offers space for various functions – museum, cultural centre, function room and restaurant. Scientific phenomena of the ocean are explained in the exhibition rooms while the skating pool with veranda and surf kiosk serve as a cultural meeting point for surfers and other water sports enthusiasts.

Kapilux by Okalux

“Under the sky, under the sea” is how Steven Holl, who designed the museum in cooperation with Brazilian architect and artist Solange Fabião, describes his guiding idea for the spatial concept. The idea is to give the visitor the feeling of being beneath the surface of the water when inside the museum. To this extent, the convex cement ceiling was designed to give the impression of a large wave. This swerved design forms the character of the exhibition rooms on the lower floor which is connected to the entrance hall and the lobby through ramps, creating perceptible vitality in the interior of the building. On the exterior, the concave form describes a large arch: opening to the sky and the ocean, the generous roof seems to correspond with the waves breaking in the distance.

An exciting contrast to the soft line of the buildings is made by two glass cubes which break through the roof area. These cubes afford views to the in- and outside.

The translucent glazing and the transparent glass areas give light to the interior creating an open atmosphere. The translucent shell consists for the most part of glass with capillary slabs – KAPILUX from OKALUX, Marktheidenfeld.

The insulating glass diffuses the daylight deeply and evenly into the rooms, which, for the most part, are located underground, simultaneously offering very good sun and glare protection. These properties make it possible to reduce artificial lighting and heat input thus lowering the cooling load of the building.

Capillary glass used in buildings stands for energy efficiency and highest possible user comfort. The “Cité de l’Océan et du Surf” takes up the idea of sustainability in two ways: while it is the goal of the exhibition to create awareness for sustainable interaction with the ocean, the glazed façade sets an attractive and effective example for the respectful use of natural resources.

From 26 to 29 October 2011, the trade show Qubique will present the best selection of inspiring furniture design in the decommissioned Tempelhof Airport. The portfolio will be limited to high-profile and authentic international brands. Big market players will feel just as at home at Qubique as progressive brands and exciting newcomers.

The focus is on classic home furniture but individual producers of lights, floor coverings, fabrics or accessories will also be on display at this spectacular location. “We went about creating this event in the way a designer creates a new piece of furniture,” says Matthias Schmid, CEO of offshow AG, the company behind Qubique.

This is not just another furniture fair – not a neutral trade show – but a platform that combines trade and marketing with communication, inspiration and entertainment.

The first two days of Qubique are only for professionals: dealers, architects, interior designers and members of the media have the opportunity to come together to exchange information and gather new ideas. During the following two days the show will open its doors to a wider audience. Design lovers and enthusiasts, trendsetters, and young creative talents will be able to experience, enjoy, and be inspired by the brands at the show.

Designer Werktag 2011

Dezeen promotion: Swiss studio Atelier Oï suspended nets from floating helium balloons to decorate the halls of interiors event Designer Werktag in Hamburg.

The event inside a former handling warehouse included presentations by organisers Glas Trösch and 14 of their partner companies, alongside talks by Christian Veddeler of  UNStudio and Aurel Aebi of Atelier Oï.

Designer Werktag took place on 19 May 2011.

Here are some more details from organisers Glas Trösch:

5th Designer Werktag 2011, Hamburg

Glas Trösch once again organised the 5th Designer Werktag

For the first time, this year’s Designer Werktag came to the north of Germany in Hamburg with a mix of international presentations, atmospheric product showcases and a party to wrap up the event. Around 600 architects, interior and other designers visited Kaischuppen 52 (which is protected as a historic building) opposite the up-and-coming Hafen City.

The former handling warehouse with its three aisles and stylish, open-style supporting structure is one of the last remaining “cathedrals of work” (as they are known in German) in the Hamburg harbour. The interior was transformed into a network room by the Swiss architecture and design company Atelier Oï for the Designer Werktag:

Blue plastic nets, supported by large helium balloons, formed a constantly slightly moving structure, suggesting the maritime environment of the harbour. Various exhibition areas were defined, culminating in the stage for presentations at the top of the hall. The pull of the balloons had been exactly adapted so that the nets floated like a delicate, blue wavy roof over the exhibition at half the height of the room.

Atelier Oï’s backdrop created a special room experience. By using “networking” as a theme it also symbolised the Designer Werktag’s wish to make contacts and to generate a strong network between architects and exhibiting companies. After a welcome address by Christian Jetzt (Glas Trösch) and presentations by Aurel Aebi (Atelier Oï), Ben Pradel (Glas Trösch) and Christian Veddeler (UNStudio), the companies presented their latest ideas for interiors.

The Designer Werktag’s compact presentation of the 14 partner companies – Anker, Armstrong, Création Baumann, Girsberger, Jasba, Kährs, KWC, Lista Office, raumPROBE, Trilux, VARIO, Villeroy & Boch, Villi and Warema – gave visitors an overview of the trends and developments in interior design and offered inspiration for new approaches to design and planning in their everyday work.

It could be argued that a prototype is in effect a sort of bespoke item – with each shape and form carefully drawn by hand, then designed and refined using a CAD programme, which is then physically created in whatever material to achieve a finished article; at which point the factory will use this as a template to work from to the designers specifications and materials to create multiples.

However, leaving the factory part to one side, this is exactly the process that any bespoke designer will go through to create their one-off pieces – only that the ‘prototype’ will be the finished article. Time, labour, materials and the finish are just some of the features that sets a bespoke piece apart.

In an era of mass production, the opportunity and demand to create individual pieces or designs has never been greater. Pinch Designs is one such company that creates hand-made pieces in the UK to order, thus providing a flexibility that’s just not possible in a mass production route. While Fromental, the wallpaper specialists, offer what they consider to be called ‘couture for clients walls’, providing hand-painted and embroidered wallpapers to commission. Diffuse porcelain lighting will create statement lighting pieces, according to the size and proportion of any space, a service that runs alongside their standard collections. Even Ben Whistler who have established a reputation for their hand-made furniture, can either customize their standard pieces of furniture to fit in with a designer’s plan, whether by using different dimensions, seating comfort, wood stains or finishes, or can create unique, one-off pieces.

With bespoke, the design possibilities are endless, whatever the shape or form, and a show like Decorex highlights this.
