Versatile lamp by Tuomas Auvinen wins Muuto Talent Award

A lamp by Finnish designer Tuomas Auvinen that fits neatly into the edges of a room has won this year’s Muuto Talent Award for students.

Tuomas Auvinen‘s 45° lamp is designed to utilise the often wasted space where a wall and ceiling meet.

“One day when entering an empty apartment, I wondered why the corners and angles were not better exploited, and then I came up with the idea for 45°,” said Auvinen.

The back of the lamp is shaped into a 90-degree angle so it can nestle between two perpendicular surfaces. The circular diffuser on the front is always at a 45 degree angle to the flat planes.

“Through its shape and versatility the lamp can be placed everywhere in the room and no matter how it is installed, it will cast the light in an angle of 45 degrees,” said Auvinen.

The lamp could be fixed into the upper corners of a space, suspended from a cord or left to rest on the floor.

The Cover wood and plywood chair by Thomas Bentzen for Danish brand Muuto is made without any metal parts. Instead it is locked together by the bent veneer armrests.

“I aimed for a crisp and vivid expression in the plywood while looking for a solid and grounded look in the frame and base of the chair,” said Bentzen. “Three years of play and hard work in the making has resulted in a light yet strong armchair, playing and taking the moulded veneer to its extreme.”

Up by TAF for Muuto

Up by TAF for Muuto

Maison&Objet 2013: Swedish designer Mattias Ståhlbom of TAF has created an uplighter for Danish brand Muuto that can be adjusted by rotating the shade.

Called Up, the product features a funnel-shaped shade that is lower at one side than the other and sits on a baring, allowing it to be rotated freely to alter the amount of light blocked.

“Up lamp mixes light and shadow to create a cosy and warm atmosphere anywhere it is placed,” says Ståhlbom. “Through the profile of the lamp shade, Up elegantly interacts with the surrounding walls and ceiling.”

The lamp features a replaceable warm LED bulb with a dimmer function. It’s made of cast aluminium with a rubber switch at the back, above the flex, and comes in white, grey or green.

Up was launched at homeware and gift fair Maison&Objet in Paris last week. See other new products launched at Maison&Objet here, including ice-cream coloured poufs and rugs by Patricia Urquiola, and colourful glassware by Scholten & Baijings for Hay.

Leaf by Broberg & Ridderstråle for Muuto

Product news: each of these lamps by Swedish design duo Mats Broberg and Johan Ridderstråle for Nordic furniture company Muuto is shaped like a single leaf at the end of a long stem.

Leaf lamp series by Broberg & Ridderstrale

The Leaf lamps by Broberg & Ridderstråle for Muuto combine aluminium, steel and brass stands with energy-efficient LED technology.

“Though the design is minimalistic and straightforward, a soft asymmetric geometry gives the lamp an organic and friendly appearance,” say the designers. “Depending on the viewing angle and how the shade is turned, the lamp will subtly transform its shape to create a graphic and leaf-like silhouette in the room.”

The Leaf lamp is available in table and floor versions and comes in black, white, grey, rose and green.

Broberg and Ridderstråle founded their Stockholm-based architecture and design practice after graduating together in 2006 from Konstfack University College of Arts, Craft and Design. This is the second lamp from Broberg & Ridderstråle for Muuto, following the Plugged Lamp designed in 2008.

Previous products by Muuto on Dezeen include a chair formed from laminated plywood shells slotted together and some containers shaped like little birds by TAF.

The information below is from

Muuto’s new cooking set and salad servers combine form, function and craftsmanship. The elegant wooden tools are precisely designed and crafted for a sleek modern look and improved functionality.

The innovative extrusion cut in the back of the cooking set HANG AROUND lets you work freely in the kitchen, while your utensils hang out on your pots or pans. TOSS AROUND, the salad servers, tell the same story of craftsmanship, materials and processes used for centuries. But in Muuto and KiBiSi’s interpretation, the wooden tools have an essential contemporary look and functional ergonomics.

These are the first Muuto products by KiBiSi – a Copenhagen based idea-driven industrial design firm founded by Kilo Design / Lars Holme Larsen, BIG Architects / Bjarke Ingels and Skibsted Ideation / Jens Martin Skibsted. The recently founded design studio has numerous International awards between them and we are proud to add them to Muuto’s team of leading Scandinavian designers.

KiBiSi partner Jens Martin Skibsted explains the idea behind Hang Around and Toss Around: “We were originally inspired by Bhutanese crafts. Their wooden everyday tools seem to have layers of stories and thoughts. We combined that with our Scandinavian design heritage and our idea-lead, no fluff design philosophy – and this little invention was bread. ”

MUUTO is a Scandinavian design company that joins forces with the leading contemporary Scandinavian designers to create original products with new perspectives. The result is an innovative collection of Scandinavian furniture, lamps and accessories for modern homes all over the world.
