Cut it Out by Noma Bar at Outline Editions

Visitors to Outline Editions gallery in London next week will be able to stamp out Noma Bar’s graphic artworks by feeding sheets of rubber and paper into the maws of a giant hole-punch shaped like a dog.

The machine’s profile is based on one of Bar’s designs and actually depicts a dog swallowing a cat, swallowing a mouse.

The information below is from Outline Editions:

Cut It Out at The London Design Festival 2011

Interactive exhibition of new work from graphic artist Noma Bar

For this year’s London Design Festival, Outline Editions has invited the ingenious and award winning graphic artist Noma Bar to create a one-man show, the centrepiece of which will be his brand new installation, Cut It Out.

Cut it Out by Noma Bar at Outline Editions

Noma will be creating an amazing, interactive art-making machine for the event. ‘Cut It Out’ is a specially commissioned, Heath Robinson-esque embossing device /sculpture in the shape of a giant dog, that will allow visitors to feed paper, rubber and other materials into
its mouth to produce their own cut-out Noma Bar images. These will be signed and numbered by the artist as part of a limited edition series. The prints and cut-outs will range in price from £20 to £300.

Cut it Out by Noma Bar at Outline Editions

In addition to the show, Noma will be holding free live drawing and create-your-own-cut-out-art workshops at the gallery during the festival.

With this simple and clever new work, Bar delves deeper into a recurring theme – negative space. Alongside Cut It Out, the artist, fresh from a sell-out show in Paris, will be exhibiting a range of other new prints, displaying his imaginative mixture of ‘double-take’ imagery and biting social commentary. With bold colours, shapes and pared-down iconography, Bar can capture the spirit of a person or the heart of an issue with arresting clarity and humour.

Cut it Out by Noma Bar at Outline Editions

In addition, for the duration of the festival, a separate section of the gallery will be devoted to a display of work by Outline Editions’ unrivalled stable of artists at the forefront of graphic art, including Anthony Burrill, Kate Moross, Beyond the Valley and Klaus Haapaniemi.

Following the London Design Festival, ‘Cut It Out’ will travel to the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, North East England for their 2011 Design Event Festival, 14th – 18th October.

Cut it Out by Noma Bar at Outline Editions

Noma Bar was born in Israel in 1973 and graduated from Bezalel Academy of Art & Design in 2000. He moved to London in 2001 but it was during the first Gulf War that Bar developed his trademark combination of caricature and pictograms: while staying with his family in a shelter in Israel he sketched the likeness of Saddam Hussein around a graphic symbol for radioactivity that
he found in a newspaper.

Cut it Out by Noma Bar at Outline Editions

Since then Bar has published over 1000 illustrations for magazines and books worldwide, including upwards of 60 front covers. His clients include The Economist, Wallpaper*, The New York Times, The Guardian, GQ, Esquire, IBM, Sony, The V&A and more. He has also released two books of his work, ‘Guess Who – The Many Faces of Noma Bar’ and ‘Negative Space’, to widespread critical acclaim.

Cut It Out runs from 17th to 30th September 2011 at: Outline Editions, 94 Berwick Street, London W1F 0QF

Opening times: 1100-1900, Mon-Sat

Live drawing and create-your-own-cut-out-art workshops with Noma Bar (free) on 17th and 24th September from 1400-1700 at Outline Editions.

Brush Hooks by Dominic Wilcox

Brush Hooks by Dominic Wilcox

London designer Dominic Wilcox claims he meant to leave these paint brushes unwashed so they would harden into coat hooks.

Brush Hooks by Dominic Wilcox

The Brush Hooks are on show at KK Outlet in London as part of an exhibition called Object Abuse. Designers including Michael Marriot, Max Lamb, Peter Marigold and F.A.T were asked to repurpose everyday objects. Object Abuse continues until 25 September and coincides with the London Design Festival. Check out our plans for the festival here.

Brush Hooks by Dominic Wilcox

Earlier this year Dominic Wilcox made a stylus that straps over his nose for using his touch-screen phone in the bath and coated the entire contents of an abandoned office in white paint.

The information below is from Wilcox:

‘Object Abuse’ at the KK Outlet, Hoxton Square, London.

The challenge given to a group of leading artists, designers and stylists was to ‘take an everyday object, remould, rebuild and repurpose it to create an entirely new item, using as little additional materials as possible.’

Inspired by the experience of forgetting to wash brushes after use and later finding the bristles hardened with paint, I turned some paint brushes into coat hooks.

Object Abuse – September at KK Outlet

Private View: Thursday 1 September
Exhibition Runs: 2 – 25 September

KK Outlet present Object Abuse as part of London Design Festival 2011.

KK Outlet have challenged a group of leading artists, designers and stylists to take an everyday object, remould, rebuild and repurpose it to create an entirely new item using as little additional materials as possible.

A hula-hoop becomes an atom.
For sale signs become a flat pack birdhouse.
A lightbulb becomes a micro-greenhouse
A sofa becomes a Pantomime horse

The aim of the project is to create a collection of re-imagined objects which highlight not only how everyday items can be recycled into something completely new but also how we think differently when we work with our hands and how physical interaction creates new ideas we wouldn’t have conceived staring at a screen.

The full collection of transformed works will be show at KK Outlet throughout September as part of London Design Festival and the ICON Design Guide.

Each item will be for sale during the show with all proceeds being donated to the St Monica’s of Hackney Primary School Art Department.

Pen Pal by Oscar Diaz for Doiy

Pen Pal by Oscar Diaz for Doiy

London designer Oscar Diaz has redesigned the pen pot so there’s no need to tip pens all over the desk or jam your fingers down the side to retrieve a paper clip or pencil sharpener that’s slipped to the bottom.

Pen Pal by Oscar Diaz for Doiy

The silicone Pen Pal has teeth round the edge to hold pens upright while a shallow dish in the centre contains smaller items.

Pen Pal by Oscar Diaz for Doiy

Diaz will present the product for Spanish company Doiy as part of an exhibition called Barcelona Design meets London at The Vyner Studio during the London Design Festival next month.

Pen Pal by Oscar Diaz for Doiy

Diaz first appeared on Dezeen in 2009 with his Ink Calendar that uses the capillary action of ink spreading across paper to display the date. See all our stories about his work here.

Check out more stories about stationery here.

Pen Pal by Oscar Diaz for Doiy

The information below is from Oscar Diaz:

Pen Pal by Oscar Diaz

Pen pal is a simple pen stand made of silicone. Observing pen holders and improvised pen pots I realised that many small objects are difficult to access when they are mixed with pens of different sizes.

Usually the smaller items fall into to the bottom, which makes them unreachable and they end up taking much of the available space.

Pen Pal proposes to have fewer pens, but have all of them accessible. The central can hold clips; pins and other small objects while the conical holes allow placing pens of different diameters all around the cavity.

It keeps everything accessible avoiding having to turn your pen pot upside down to find a clip.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

London designer Makiko Nakamura will exhibit a tea set engulfed in flowers and foliage at Tent London during the London Design Festival next month.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

Called 100 Years After the Party, the series is inspired by a story Nakamura tells about a tea service left behind at the end of civilisation.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

In the story, seeds land on the disintegrating porcelain by chance 100 years later, consuming the pieces in flowers.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

Tent London will take place from 22 to 25 September at the Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London, E1 6QL, UK.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

Check out Dezeen’s plans for the London Design Festival here.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

Here some more details from Tent London:

Makiko Nakamura is a ceramic artist and designer based in London, and “What a wonderful world!” is a slogan of her creation. She has worked with ceramics in both art and design, making narrative one-off art pieces that have fantasy stories behind them. In addition, she has enjoyed making tableware that focuses on function, form and design. In the both types of works, Makiko combines sophistication and humor.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

Anthology of daydream stories – 100 Years After The Party

Makiko creates her works from stories she generated with some inspiration and her works also play a role as media to approach the stories behind them.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

One hundred years after the party, all the luxury furniture and ornaments in the room have rotten and moulded, and only porcelain tea set has been left. Gorgeous gold paint on the tea set has been washed away by rain and the tea set was absolutely lonely and miserable.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

But on the day, one hundred years after the party, it is nothing short of a miraculous, beautiful bird dropping the seed on the tea set.

100 Years After the Party by Makiko Nakamura

Then, leaves and germs come out and flowers bloom on it. The tea set has got a new life and not lonely anymore.

Happily ever after…

Return to the Source / senUFO – originals.

Find a quiet place and sit comfortably. Imagine a happier story then the film “District 9″.

Once upon a time there was an UFO floating above Africa, somewhere between the South of Mali and Ivory Coast. The aliens seeing that the locals have no furniture whatsoever, tried to approach them friendly with design. The locals have never seen such objects before, they started wondering what the strange metal and clean colours were. The metal was Aluminium and the colours were CMYK the four basic colours.

After the aliens left the locals started copying these objects out of wood. This is how Senufo tribal carving has become known to the world.

Hungarian design duo a+z design was founded 2009 by Attila F. Kovacs and Zsuzsa Megyesi. Attila + Zsuzsa teamed up after several successful common interior design work to produce their own furniture and lighting collections.

Attila studied architecture and design and spent over ten years in the film industry, designing sets for feature films, operas and commercials . His bar, restaurant and museum designs in Budapest are award-winning and have been featured in renowned international designed publications. Attila also worked as production designer for the movie Bel Ami, starring Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci.

Zsuzsa studied art history and aesthetics and started her career as art curator. Living in Los Angeles her interest turned to interior design and styling. She worked for several feature and commercial films. After years of working for art and design magazines as design editor and interior stylist she became art director of STILUS Magazine.
