OneReceipt

Store all your receipts in a searchable online interface
OneReceipt1.jpg

Timed to launch for today’s Cyber Monday online shopping extravaganza, the new service OneReceipt provides a solution to keep track of all your proofs of purchase. Whether you have receipts from Black Friday, plan to accrue some more over the holidays or simply have an overflow of receipts and confirmations in your inbox dating back a couple years, you probably wish you had a better organization system.

OneReceipt5.jpg

We’ve been testing a beta version of OneReceipt, but at 12pm EST the free service goes live for the public. Simply “reserve your name” and add an email address—OneReceipt will automatically look through your email account and create searchable entries for the purchases you’ve made from online retailers from iTunes to Amazon. Instead of seeing the total amounts you spent on your card statements, OneReceipt imports itemized lists.

Though the service will import most email invoices, there are still some retailers it doesn’t recognize. For those instances, you can forward the email receipt to a personal OneReceipt email account. Not all of these forwarded emails will create line-item lists, but they will show up in your log. Plus, you can give stores your personalized OneReceipt email address when you make purchases, keeping your regular email addresses clutter-free.

OneReceipt3.jpg

For the analog receipts you accrue, the site is making it possible to email photos of receipts to your OneReceipt account, where they will be automatically imported, and then searched and tagged. The convenient organizing service, OneReceipt will be available beginning 12pm EST, 28 November 2011.

Poketo iPad Case

New iPad covers inspired by the classic manila envelope

Poketo-all-1.jpg Poketo-grey-2.jpg

This holiday season Poketo will launch a series of new tech accessories, including a sleek polyurethane iPad case that caught our eye. Harkening back to the heyday of snail mail, the envelope shape closes with a classic string-and-button fastener and is available in rust, gold, gray and black.

poketo5.jpg poketo6.jpg

Despite the proliferation of snap cases and sleeves, the safest way to guard your tablet remains a full-coverage case with a secure closure like the envelope’s. Plus, the unisex aesthetic and subdued color palette of the Poketo will surely appeal to any design-minded iPad owner on your gift list.

poketo1.jpg Poketo-all-cases.jpg

Poketo’s envelope iPad case is available on their e-shop for $48. Their new holiday line also includes a two-tone recycled leather iPad case for $64 and polyurethane three dot iPad case for $48.

Thurso

A revamped Manhattan for the holiday season
TEN_POUND_3.jpg

On a recent trip to LA, we had the pleasure of grabbing a drink at £10, a posh semi-secret lounge at the Montage hotel in Beverly Hills. An official U.S. outpost of The Macallan, the interiors of the recently-opened space leave room for improvement, but the tucked-away spot filled with low-slung couches overlooking a grassy courtyard makes for a nicely atmospheric stop-in if you’re in the area, complete with the charming bartender, Nicholas Vitulli, who mixes drinks table-side.

TEN_POUND_4.jpg

Our favorite was the Thurso, which puts a deliciously fun twist on the Manhattan. Named for an area of the Scottish Highlands, it calls for The Macallan 12 and cinnamon syrup in place of the more traditional American whiskey and sweet vermouth. It’s a simple switch, but one that takes the cocktail staple to the next level for holiday-season dinner parties. Topped with a dusting of fresh nutmeg, sipping it anywhere is a multi-sensory experience.

TEN_POUND_2.jpg TEN_POUND_1.jpg

Thurso

2 oz The Macallan 12

1 demarara sugar cube

3/4 oz cinnamon syrup

2 dashes Jerry Thomas’ bitters

3 dashes Jamaican jerk bitters

Stir/strain over Highland Springs ball/shaved nutmeg

Brooke Weeber

Watercolor illustrations combine Wes Anderson style with wildlife and folklore
Brooke_Weeber3.jpg

Brooke Weeber‘s delicate, darkly humorous watercolor-and-ink illustrations are one
part Wes Anderson, one part Edward Gorey. Fantastical wolves and deer roam freely
through pastel-tinted clouds and trees, sharing space with bearded strongmen and booze. Though the Northwest native admits that she’s a huge fan of Anderson, she cites Greek and Native American art as her primary influence.

Brooke_Weeber5.jpg Brooke_Weeber8.jpg

“I love the simple line figures painted onto vases and sewn into tapestries, and the use of geometric shapes and patterns [in Greek and Native American art],” says Weeber. “They also show an obvious appreciation for the natural world.”

Brooke_Weeber7.jpg

Weeber studied fine art at the University of Oregon, but moved to New York shortly after graduation to exercise her artistry in a completely different field—cake decorating. After four years on the East Coast, she began to miss the wildlife that plays such a prominent role in her illustrations and moved back to Portland. “Once I was more acclimated, I started to really appreciate the amazing things that New York had to offer—the culture and diversity alone is much harder to find in Oregon,” reflects Weeber. “But alas, in the end, the chaotic lifestyle wasn’t for me.”

Brooke_Weeber1.jpg Brooke_Weeber9.jpg

Besides illustrating album covers for local luminaries such as Blitzen Trapper and Loch
Lomond
, Weeber shows her work locally and sells it through Etsy. Her fruits and
vegetables calendar is a beautiful and practical guide for anyone who likes to eat locally and shop at farmers’ markets but has no idea when figs are actually in season. Her “Animals of the Pacific Northwest” print might also reassure anyone who has been duped by the latest crop of teenage vampire romances; werewolves are not endemic to this corner of the United States.

Prices range from $4 for a greeting card to $50. For more of Weeber’s work, check her website or her
Etsy shop.

Nick Veasey for The Macallan

A British X-ray photographer turns to whisky for his latest subject
Macallan-Pillar-Series.jpg

Shooting with an X-ray machine rather than with a traditional camera, British photographer Nick Veasey produces surprising, visually enchanting work that begs the observer to think about what’s under the surface. With more than twenty years of experimental experience, the TED speaker‘s fascinating body of work spans subjects from insects and flowers to cars and even airplanes, each broken down to expose its raw inner components. Veasey’s next project finds him putting his graphic images on whisky boxes as part of a collaboration with The Macallan.

Adorned with images inspired by the Macallan’s six pillars—spiritual home, curiously small stills, finest cut, exceptional oak casks, natural color and peerless spirit—Veasey’s special box set dresses up their signature Sherry Oak 12 Year Old bottles for the 2011 holiday season.

Macallan-Pillar-Drop.jpg Macallan-Pillar-Cask.jpg

In anticipation of the soon-to-be-released holiday editions, we talked to Veasey about his unique craft and his recent work with the whisky maker.

The idea of X-ray photography is so unique, how did it come about and how long have you been experimenting with it?

I’m not the first to use X-rays when creating art, but I do like to think my X-rays are the most impactful. I’ve been doing this and nothing else for 20 years. I’ve always been a keen experimenter and never one to obey rules. I saw some X-rays of objects a long time ago and they made a big impression on me. From my first X-ray exposure I’ve known there is nothing else I want to do. I love X-ray, it’s that simple.

Could you briefly explain the process of X-ray photography?

Indeed, special equipment is required, but not a camera. I use X-ray machines similar to those in hospitals, but more powerful. Basically electrons are charged in a vacuum. These electrons become radiographic photons, another spectrum of light. This spectrum of light is invisible and radioactive. That is why it is so dangerous. I have a specially built bunker to control the radiation. The radiographic passes through the subject being X-rayed and leaves an impression on film or a digital capture device.

Macallan-Pillar-House.jpg Macallan-Pillar-Still.jpg
What inspired your work with the Macallan? Are you a whisky drinker?

The Macallan is a big supporter of photography. They have previously worked with Rankin and Albert Watson on their Masters of Photography Series. When we X-rayed the bottle for Macallan we did it full and empty, meaning there was some on hand for me to drink! I find The Macallan to be a very nice Scotch—I get an earthy mellow taste and thoroughly enjoy a dram every now and again after a long day in the studio.

What was unique about shooting the “six pillars” of the Macallan?

Well, on one level the results are unique as these subjects had never been X-rayed before. The house and the water droplet were particularly challenging to shoot. X-raying a house is not simple, nor is X-raying a moving drop of water. My x-ray equipment is not portable so we had to create these images in my X-ray lab. That took some doing, believe me.

Outerwear Halloween Costumes

Seven everyday options that double as halloween costumes

For those who prefer comfort over the whole-nine-yards costumes—or if you’re just looking to save some cash and effort this holiday—we looked to our favorite jackets and other everyday clothing to double as your get-up. Intended as inspiration, why not turn the below frog costume into a pea-in-a-pod? The black down poncho-slash-coat could just as easily be a black cat too.

halloween-baseball1.jpg

Baseball Player

Everyone needs a great transitional jacket, and Nike’s Hybrid Destroyer is just about as versatile as it gets. Pair it with a few pieces of baseball paraphernalia for a major league costume this Halloween. The jacket sells from 6pm for $96, Starter’s Wiffle ball Snap back for No Mas goes for $30, Homage‘s fitted ball cap and tribute to the legendary Woody Hayes sells for $40. Round it out with the Japanese Nokona Buckaroo Series for $200 from Ball Glove Warehouse.

halloween-detective1.jpg

Detective

Clothe your crime-fighting alter ego with Zara’s new hooded trench. A great fall investment for inclement days, it also doubles as a Halloween costume to channel any favorite detective. (Inspector Gadget is our gumshoe of choice.) Complete the look with a wool fedora, magnifying glass and pipe. The double-breasted trench sells for $190 at Zara, the Borsalino hat goes for $350 at J. J. Hat Center and the vintage magnifying glass sells for $250 from Gilai Collectibles. For a touch of humor, slap on a classic fake mustache.

halloween-bunny-frog1.jpg

Bunny

As if you needed a holiday to wrap the wee one in this adorable bunny sweatshirt— Talc’s critter hoodie adds both warmth and charm this Halloween—all it needs is a carrot for the full effect. The zip-front sweatshirt sells for $78 at Sweet William, with the toy carrot for $7 at Toy Boxes.

Frog

There’s no chance of trick-or-treating chills with a down onesie from Patagonia. Pair it with a foam frog mask for the cutest amphibian in town. The Patagonia Infant Down Sweater Bunting sells online for $130 and the foam mask can be picked up for $8.

halloween-rainbow2.jpeg

Rainbow

For a Halloween costume that combines retro Rainbow Brite with supreme functionality—not to mention relatively high performance potential for a pair of flamboyant footwear—the North Face Gotham boots do the trick when worn with any candy-colored coat or clothing on top—bonus points for a hat and scarf. The boots sell for $120 from The North Face and the ultra-light down jacket can be found for $80 at Uniqlo stores. Check MoMA for the scarf ($48) and hat ($35).

halloween-bat-witch.jpg

Witch

The Nau Down Stole works not only for a fall-to-winter shift, but across costumes as well. When paired with a vintage broom and a custom satin peak hat, the jacket morphs itself into a nice, warm witch’s cloak. It’s $230 at Nau. Add a vintage broom ($48) or one from your kitchen and throw on a customizable satin witch’s hat, for $24.

Bat

There’s also something bat-like about the Stole, making it the prime top layer for a slightly creepy costume. Accessorize with a bat masquerade mask or, our favorite, the Batstache.
