In A Flash

I love the structural design of the Condenser Flashlight, which is crafted from flexible materials. The reason behind this is to add flexibility, making it easy to grab the flashlight and even control the contours of the light beam. Simple physics and clever thinking!

Surgical Precision Light

This ergonomically designed Medlite is unlike any surgical headset on the market. Comfort is vital during a long surgery where fatigue can affect performance, so rather than an over the head adjustable strap with large knobs, this design takes two side supports & contours over & around the head for both support & stability while distributing weight over a larger area. Additionally, a co-molded foam liner & removable Velcro strap make for easy cleaning without the additional cracks & seams of most headsets.

Zero Illumination

If you had to rethink the flashlight, what design would you try to evolve it to? André Duarte has brought in a whole new dimension as far orientation goes. The 0 Light can be held in the palm of your hand and beam up the lights to any direction. It’s like this little object in your hand that is lined with powerful LEDs. Interesting form for a seemingly basic object.

The Perfect Spy Light

Memo is a high-tech, compact and lightweight flashlight that merges three devices into one- the flashlight, camera and projector. Designed for nighttime use, the inbuilt camera makes it possible to capture photos of the illuminated scene with the simple click of a button. The photos stored internally can then be projected back onto a surface through the built-in lens or uploaded to other devices via the retractable USB port.

Dot Dash Dot Dash Blink!

Simple and realistic this Flash Communicator is one handy gadget you might want to take on your next camping trip. More like a real-time Morse code device, it translates voice to flashes of light that can be detected, read, and translated to voice by the receiving party. The idea behind this project was to make communication between survivors of natural disasters, easy. With the help of a Flash Communicator, locating and rescuing them would be more efficient.

During and after natural disasters, electrical devices are often paralyzed. Since the electrical supply is blocked, it is difficult to see at night. Communication is virtually impossible, so it is more difficult to locate survivors. Flash Communicator is a special communication device that could be used in this context.

  • Flash Communicator can be used as a simple night-light to alert any aircraft that might pass by.
  • It can be used to quickly transfer information about the current situation.
  • When the user presses the button that says ‘communication’ and speaks through the microphone, the VLC (visible light communication) transmitter changes the voice to light. If the VLC receiver of other party recognizes the light, it then changes the light into voice so that it can be heard.
  • When the voice component is not being used, the product automatically turns off.
  • This product could be placed in buildings’ staircases or in any public place as an emergency flash light for use whenever people might need one.

Flash Communicator is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winning entry.

No Ordinary Flashlight

We’ve had a couple quakes here recently and they only serve as a reminder of how unprepared I am for the BIG ONE. A Kickstarter project called the TRIOH! caught my interest when I went looking for a flashlight that could sit out in the open and not look fugly. Nice design? Check. Functions as a flashlight? Check. Works as a lamp and emergency light? Check & check! Designer Greg Hinzmann is several thousand shy of hitting his goal so I’m gonna plug it here because I WANT THIS. $49 bucks so I can have piece of mind and you get a TRIOH!

Everyday Flash

The Apollo Flashlight is an attempt to blur the lines between a flashlight and a table lamp. Most often flashlights lead a sedentary life, forgotten in some obscure kitchen drawer. However giving it the meaningful life of a regular lamp, not only enhances its functionality but also gives it a dual purpose.

As the designer explains, “All of the electronic components are housed within an inner-sphere which enables a hollow handle. To change its function from a flashlight, the inner sphere is rolled back on itself to become a radiant lamp or directional spotlight. The intensity of the light can be varied by switching on the required number of LEDs.”
