Scout designed by Big-Game now available at Dezeen Watch Store

Dezeen Watch Store: Scout, the first watch by Swiss-based design studio Big-Game, is now available in five colours at Dezeen Watch Store.

Scout designed by Big-Game

Designed for everyday use, Scout features flat surfaces and geometric lines with a bold, easy-to-read face and contrasting numerals and markers.

“We researched heavily on military and functional timepieces throughout history,” Big-Game told Dezeen Watch Store. “Their use of high contrast dials, readable typefaces and simple case designs made them look functional and elegant at the same time.”

“We wanted to come up with our own updated version and call it Scout – a simple, robust, affordable timepiece – a tool for everyday life,” added the designer.

The watch, which features a durable nylon strap, also draws from surprising nostalgic inspiration. “In a more unexpected way we were always big fans of the Flik Flak kids watches that also have an aluminium case and a Nylon strap,” explained the designer.

Big-Game to present Japanese oak chair in Milan

Milan 2014: Swiss design studio Big-Game will present an oak chair for Japanese brand Karimoku New Standard in Milan next week (+ slideshow).

Castor low chair by Big-Game

Big-Game‘s Castor Low Chair for Karimoku New Standard adds to the Castor family previously created by the studio, which all use Japanese oak.

“Karimoku New Standard’s know-how in woodworking combines skilled craftsmen with cutting edge technology,” the studio told Dezeen. “They have achieved the slim armrest using very precise joinery work, milling and sanding, and have given it a great finish that ages well. After all, it’s a part that you’re always touching or rubbing against when you’re sitting on an armchair.”

The Castor references ergonomics of chairs found in traditional Swiss cafes, including the low seat with a wide backrest.

The chair joins a collection that comprises a bench, a shelf, stackable stools and seats, as well as dining tables. It is available in natural oak, grey, black and green.

Big-Game to present adjustable metal coat rack for Hay in Milan

Milan 2014: Swiss studio Big-Game will present a combined coat rack and picture ledge for Danish brand Hay during Milan’s design week (+ slideshow).

BEAM coat rack by Big Game for Hay

The BEAM coat rack by Big-Game allows the user to slide as many coat hooks onto the profile as needed and display thin items at the same time.

BEAM coat rack by Big Game for Hay

“We found it useful to be able to slide the hooks on the metal beam wherever you need them,” the designers told Dezeen. “If it is on the right or on the left side of a door for instance, or depending on what you want to hang on it.”

Solid ash hooks are cut to shape and slide directly onto the metal H-shaped profile, which attaches to the wall.

“We were always fascinated by the peg rails found in American Shaker houses,” said the designers. “Instead of hiding the mess, they somehow make it manageable.

“When we were asked to think about something that could be in entrances, we readapted this idea with a metal profile,” they added.

The aluminium profile is available in 60 or 90-centimetre lengths. Colours include grey, red and green, and extra hooks can be purchased in natural ash.

BEAM will be shown at the former printing house Spazio Ciovassino in Milan’s Brera district from 8-13 April.

Everyday Objects by Big-Game

Product news: Swiss designers Big-Game will present new products including a coat hanger, a tray and a hammer  in Milan next month.

Everyday Objects by Big-Game

Called Everyday Objects, Big-Game‘s show at Galleria 70 will feature Cargo, a collection of items for Italian brand Alessi that were inspired by the aesthetic of Swiss toolboxes from the 1930s. There’s a pair of small trays for storing anything from tools to stationary, plus a hammer with an ash handle.

Everyday Objects by Big-Game

For Japanese brand Karimoku New Standard, the designers have produced the Castor table to match their earlier Castor chair and stool.

Everyday Objects by Big-Game

The Castor tables come flat-packed and once assembled can be easily stacked. The round legs sit level with the tabletops at each rounded corner, so the tables can still be placed side-by-side.

Everyday Objects by Big-Game

Also on show at the exhibition will be Beam, an aluminium and ash coat hook that borrows its form from the peg rails in American Shaker houses. Beam is designed for Danish brand Hay.

Everyday Objects by Big-Game

Previous Big-Game projects featured on Dezeen include a series of cork toy boats launched in 2011 and the Bold chair from 2007 (below), which will also be shown as part of the Everyday Objects exhibition. See more design by Big-Game on Dezeen.

Everyday Objects will take place at Galleria 70, Corso di Porta Nuova 36/38, from 9 to 14 April.

Here’s some more information about each product from Big-Game:

BIG-GAME presents new everyday objects for Alessi, Hay, and Karimoku New Standard.

BEAM coat hanger, prototype for Hay

We were always fascinated by the peg rails found in American Shaker houses. Instead of hiding the mess, they somehow make it manageable. So when we were asked to think about something that could be in entrances, we readapted this idea with a metal profile. You can slide in the amount of hooks you want. It can be short or long depending on where you want to put it. You can also leave a note on it.

CARGO box, prototype for Alessi

A while ago, we were asked by Alberto Alessi to design “anonymous Swiss objects”. As a reference, he gave us the classic 30’s Swiss metal toolboxes.

Our idea was to make some universal plastic containers with a wooden handle, bringing the functionality of toolboxes to the home. The CARGO boxes can be used to store all kinds of things, from stationery to sewing gear, tools to kitchen stuff.

CARGO hammer, prototype for Alessi

As a part of the series, we also made a simple hammer (everybody needs one at home).

CARGO catch all, prototype for Alessi

Along with two boxes and the hammer, the CARGO series also includes a circular catchall tray inspired by the traditional Japanese wooden carrying boxes called okamochi.

CASTOR chair, product for Karimoku New Standard

To design the CASTOR chair, we were inspired by the ergonomics of the wooden chairs that you find in old Swiss cafés that are famously very comfortable. It’s made in Japan from solid oak by a company called Karimoku New Standard. The wood comes from trees that have irregular shapes and generally end up as paper pulp. The company’s motto is: An object made of wood has to live at least as long as the tree it was made from.

Everyday Objects by Big-Game

CASTOR tables, prototype for Karimoku New Standard

Part from the chair, the CASTOR family also includes a stool, a bench, a shelf, and two tables. The tables are designed to be flat packed. Even though the feet are on the outside, the round edge has just the right dimension so you can put two tables together. We made them compact, as we wanted them to fit into various sized interiors, as well as cafés and restaurants. The tables stack, and the rectangle is twice the size of the square, so it’s easy to assemble them in various configurations.

Flat Mirrors by Big-Game

Designers Big-Game of Lausanne have made a series of mirrors from car windscreens.

Flat Mirrors by Big-Game

Called FLAT mirrors, the project involved collecting windscreens from cars with flat windows: a Citröen 2 CV, Renault 4L, Volkwagen Beatle and Fiat Panda.

These were then silvered to create a mirrored surface.

Floors by Big-Game

Designers Big-Game of Lausanne have won the Swiss Federal Design Award with their shelving system comprising aluminium slats on wooden frame.

Called Floors, the product is designed for simple self-assembly with the machined aluminium pieces slotting into grooves in two ash frames.

Floors by Big-Game

The information that follows is from Big-Game:

FLOORS is a simple, self assembled, shelving system. The work started with the use of standard aluminium profiles, commonly used in architecture to support heavy loads.

Floors by Big-Game

The machined aluminium profiles, which replace wooden planks, serve both as props and assembly system. The uprights are made of ash, a hard and affordable wood that allows the section to be minimal.

Floors by Big-Game

Starting with references such as industrial or cellar shelves, or the Gorm System (most affordable shelving system from IKEA), our goal was to make a simplified and optimized system for the domestic context.

Floors by Big-Game

The drawing of the object is basic and keeps the archetypal shape of a shelf. This dictates an intuitive assembly system. FLOORS is a modular system and makes it possible to create different progressive combinations.

Floors by Big-Game

Big-Game is a design studio founded in 2004 by Grégoire Jeanmonod (Swiss), Elric Petit (Belgian) and Augustin Scott de Martinville (French). It is now based in Lausanne (Switzerland).
