Light and Shadow Photography

Paceman by MINI

Car brand MINI has launched the Paceman: a cross between a sports activity vehicle and a coupé (+ slideshow).

Paceman by MINI

“It’s an innovative concept, a car that the world has never seen before in that shape and form,” head of design at MINI Anders Warming told Dezeen at the launch in Mallorca.

With much of the front of the car based on the five-door MINI Countryman, the three-door Paceman model has some significant changes to the roof and rear design to make it look more sporty. “Where MINI so far had the vertical lights sitting on the out board of the fenders, we have now horizontal emphasis at the back with the tail lights that give an impression of width. That’s completely new to MINI,” says Warming. “It’s very precise and go-kart-like, so I think horizontal tail lights emphasise this road holding.”

Large doors allow easy access to the back of the car, which has plenty of head room for a coupé and two individual chairs rather than an integrated back seat. Other features include a large, circular speedometer in the centre console and a built-in smart phone dock.

The Paceman was first unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September. Previous designs we’ve featured by MINI include a panel-van version of the Clubman and a concept for an electric scooter.

Wrap Your Head Around Kaylene Kau’s Take On a Prosthetic Limb

Prosthetic-arm1.jpg

Industrial Designers always seem to be tackling the issue of prosthetic limbs, there is good reason to. It is estimated that in the United States, there are approximately 1.7 million people living with limb loss. The difficulty in replicating the functions of the human arm and hand lay in the complex machinery required. Kaylene Kau, a recent graduate of the University of Washington for Industrial Design, came up with this concept. Unlike conventional concepts, this one is essentially a tentacle-like arm that allows for dexterity and grip.

Prosthetic-arm2.jpg

The radical approach allows for less motors and machinery to occupy the space within the arm. This translates to less parts, cheaper to produce and easier to maintain. The tentacle arm approach allows someone to grip multiple objects just like a real hand would. However, I am skeptical about how finer, more tactile operations such as using a pencil or picking up a small object could happen.

Prosthetic-arm3.jpg

The solution to control the arm unit is simplified here but with further refinement such a concept could work. It is great to see that there are design solutions that can extend so far from conventional approaches. The organic form, not human, is a beautiful contrast to the Darth Vader like arms that are on the market already.

Movie: 1111 Lincoln Road by Herzog & de Meuron

Herzog & de Meuron’s 1111 Lincoln Road multi-storey car park in Miami Beach also plays host to parties, yoga classes and weddings, explains proprietor Robert Wennett in this movie produced by filmmaker Elizabeth Priore (+ photographs by Hufton + Crow).

Named 1111 Lincoln Road, the concrete building with floor slabs supported on wedge-shaped columns was completed in 2010 to offer naturally lit parking levels that can also be used for other activities above a row of shops and restaurants.

“I had the opportunity to change people’s perception of what parking is and to build a type of building that becomes a social gathering space and a public space” says Wennett. “Everything we do in the garage is not what you expect in a parking garage.”

He goes on to explain how the building contains “a grand central staircase” rather than an enclosed stairwell and is also filled with public art. “To want to go to a parking garage, versus wanting to exit it as soon as possible becomes a new paradigm,” he declares.

Finally, Wennett explains that he lives in an apartment on the top floor of the building. “People always ask me ‘why would you want to live inside of a parking garage?’ but the moment they arrive they never ask me the question again,” he says.

Directed and produced by Elizabeth Priore, the movie is a semi-finalist in the Focus Forward filmmaker competition. Five winners are due to be announced in January.

We first revealed designs for 1111 Lincoln Road back in 2008, before featuring photographs of the completed building after it opened in 2010.

Herzog & de Meuron also recently completed a gallery that looks like a pair of barns in Long Island.
