The Lovie Awards 2012

Celebrating the Internet’s most valuable European players
lovie-awards1.jpg

Now in their second year, Europe’s Lovie Awards are quickly gaining momentum with a jam-packed program based around meaningful recognition of achievement in the interactive fields. In an awards-heavy industry, The Lovies—sister to the US’ Webby Awards—stand out for carefully selecting work that is as relevant now as it will be in the future. This distinction is clear even in the naming, which borrows from Ada Lovelace, the world’s first programmer who insightfully saw the computer as a tool with way more potential than simply calculating sums.

“The Lovie Awards are a pure kind of awards,” explains founder Nik Roope. He, along with a permanent panel of judges from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences will pick winners from over 80 categories, ensuring a more standardized selection process for the annual competition. “I think awards are really important,” Roope says, adding that they created The Lovies “to try to help establish what things should be the standard, and what we should celebrate.”

In the lightning-fast field of technology, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the increasing surplus of applications. Like the Gold Rush or the Industrial Revolution, this surge of digital arts and sciences is “full of brilliant inventors etc., but it’s also full of bullshit,” Roope remarks. In the same way he and his agency Poke London help clients navigate through the ever-changing digital landscape, the expert judges behind The Lovies reel it all in and decipher what will become embedded in our culture, creating “anchors” for the world to use as meaningful benchmarks for creative thinking in the digital realm.

As media partner, Cool Hunting is excited to see what The Lovies will put forward this year. There are still a few days left to submit an entry, which is “open to all European organizations and individuals involved in designing, building, managing, maintaining, marketing or promoting Websites, Interactive Advertising & Media, Online Film & Video, and Mobile & App content for European business, consumer or general audiences.” Also keep an eye out for the awards themselves, taking place this November during Internet Week Europe.

Production Methods: Friction Welding

0frictionwelding.jpg

Friction welding is the process by which two pieces of metal are fused together by rotating one of them at high speed, then pressing the two together. Take a look:

One advantage of friction welding is that you needn’t clean the pieces before bonding them; the friction cleans the materials as they grind together, and centrifugal force migrates any dirt to the outside.

Another advantage is that it can be used to join dissimilar materials–say, lightweight aluminum and high-strength steel, like you might see in an aerospace application–which have different melting points that would make them impossible to join by conventional welding methods.

A third advantage is you can weld extremely thick-walled parts together. Imagine trying to get the heat from a blowtorch to penetrate down into something several inches thick; it just ain’t happening. But with friction welding, wherever the two pieces are coming into contact will be joined.

When the Packaging is Part of the Product

tubetoys1.jpg

There’s an old adage for anyone who has kids (and/or cats). You spend all the money on a new toy or technology, but what does the gift recipient end up playing with most? The box.

But never fear. Tube Toys, designed by London designer Oscar Diaz for NPW, makes the packaging a part of the toy. From a car to a tractor to a fire truck, the toys are simple vehicles with all the parts inside for assembly, including the wheels, axles and stickers for labels. The tube part comes in when you start putting the toy together by using the tube for the vehicle’s body.

tubetoys2.jpg

The only wasted parts? The label wrapping, which doubles as instructions, and the sticker paper, after the stickers are removed. That’s part of the value statement of Tube Toys, which emphasizes the green part of its toys, noting that the packages reduces “considerably the amount of material discarded after purchase, and the added cost that traditional packaging involves.” What’s more, Diaz notes that the materials themselves are made of “recycled and/or recyclable” materials.

tubetoys3.jpg

As a designed object, Tube Toys represent a creative way to incorporate the packaging. I got a chance to play with the train and it was easy enough to assemble the pieces and then disassemble them at the end of the toys. The tubes could easily be stacked end to end in a special box, making storage at the end of the day a cinch as well. It will be interesting to see if Diaz can expand his concept further, with other toys that incorporate the packaging.

Bestselling erotic novel “driving sales of designer sex toys”

Form 3 by Yves Behar of Fuseproject for Jimmyjane

Dezeen wire: designer sex toys are enjoying record sales thanks to the success of bestselling erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James, according to design-led vibrator brand Jimmyjane.

The brand, which recently collaborated with designer Yves Behar on a series of sex toys (above), said it had seen a spike in sales, which it attributes to the novel.

“While conversation around female sexuality and pleasure has rapidly picked up steam over the past decade, the popularity of Fifty Shades has caused an overwhelming societal shift bringing the dialogue to the fore,” says Jimmyjane chief creative Ethan Imboden, who founded the brand in 2004. “These novels are accelerating the progress of vibrators and other accessories into the mainstream, and are igniting imaginations around the world.”

Below is a press release from Jimmyjane:

July 18, 2012: Jimmyjane, the design-centric brand and leading innovator in the vibrator market, is part of a trend of pleasure product companies seeing a spike in sales and consumer interest due to the popularity of the adult novel, Fifty Shades of Grey. In addition to record sales – Fab.com recently revealed that their best selling item is a Jimmyjane vibrator – retailers of sex accessories are noticing a substantial shift in consumer attitudes in which customers are emerging seeking top quality, well-designed products.

Jimmyjane has seen a spike in sales across their full product range, and in particular in their best-selling line of FORM Waterproof Rechargeable Vibrators, designed by Yves Behar. Unlike prior generations of sex accessories, FORM Vibrators exceed the high standards of quality, function and aesthetics that these more discerning customers routinely apply to the other products in their daily lives.

“While conversation around female sexuality and pleasure has rapidly picked up steam over the past decade, the popularity of Fifty Shades has caused an overwhelming societal shift bringing the dialogue to the fore. These novels are accelerating the progress of vibrators and other accessories into the mainstream, and are igniting imaginations around the world,” says Ethan Imboden, founder and Chief Creative of Jimmyjane. Imboden has worked to break down the taboo around female sexual pleasure and pleasure products since he launched his brand in 2004.

The three most recent Jimmyjane vibrator launches were a design collaboration between Imboden and Yves Behar, noted industrial designer and founder of Fuseproject. Behar believes “The more that consumers know about the pleasure products that are available to them, the more they’re empowered to make educated choices about design, quality and efficacy. From the numbers we’re seeing, Fifty Shades seems to be providing quite an education.”

At Jimmyjane, the conventional wisdom is that this is just the beginning of the vibrator’s movement into the mainstream dialogue. Recently there has been a wave of exposure, from the film Hysteria (about the invention of the vibrator) and the Tony award-winning play, In the Next Room, to product features on shows such as Mrs. Brown’s Boys and even Oprah. Earlier this year, Channel 4 commissioned Sex Toy Story, a documentary looks behind Britain’s biggest supplier of sex toys, Ann Summers.

About Jimmyjane

Jimmyjane is a design-centric brand founded on the belief that life is better with a sexy twist. We design products and experiences to provide pleasure, strengthen connection, and create provocative possibility. From decadent massage candles and natural massage lotions to luxurious blindfolds and the iconic 24k gold vibrator, if you enjoy being sexy, we have something for you. Jimmyjane has been honored with numerous design awards, and new concepts are continually in development to bring sophisticated sexiness to all. For more information, visit WWW.JIMMYJANE.COM.
