Everybody Frieze: NYC’s Newest Art Fair Finds ‘Grit, Romance, and Panache’ on Randall’s Island

A couple of centuries ago, when the Revolutionary War was in full swing, the British commandeered a patch of farmland in the East River and used it to launch amphibious attacks on Manhattan. Today we know it as Randall’s Island, and a new crop of Brits have seized it for friendly, aboveground purposes: an international contemporary art fair. The first edition of Frieze New York opens Friday in Randall’s Island Park. Nearly 200 galleries will showcase works inside a light-infused temporary structure designed by New York-based Solid Objectives–Indeburg Liu (SO–IL).

“We build a very big fair and to try and find a spot for it isn’t easy,” Frieze New York co-director Amanda Sharp tells us. “It has to be a space that is accessible, that has a little bit of romance and panache about it, that feels in tune with the idea that perhaps Frieze is more of an innovation.” Determined to avoid setting up shop in a hangar on the Hudson, Sharp and co-director Matthew Slotover scouted fresh locales, including one they had never heard of: Randall’s Island. “I go out there, I get out there very easily, and I’m basically standing on the river, in this beautiful open green space, looking back at this fantastic view,” says Sharp, who also discovered “a bit of grittiness” reminiscent of ’70s New York and films such as The French Connection, which was shot on the island. “So it is unknown, but oddly enough, it’s very familiar. It has a little bit of magic about it, and that’s what we were looking for,” she adds. “If you build a fair with really good galleries, I assume that really good collectors will come because they like to see good art, but if you make it an event, perhaps you open art up to more people, and that really excites me.”

Salone Milan 2012: Good Woodwork by Rui Alves

Milan12-SaloneSatellite-RuiAlves-0.jpg

I wouldn’t have guessed that Portuguese designer Rui Alves would produce work under My Own Super Studio, but insofar as his friendly demeanor matched that of his unassuming furniture, the moniker is intended to suggest humility as opposed to narcissism.

We weren’t the only ones who were impressed by Alves’ beautifully-executed woodwork at the SaloneSatellite this year: the organizers saw fit to include his “Woodpecker” design (above and below) in the Best-in-Show section in the far corner.

It’s an elegant interchangeable home organization solution, taking trestle legs as inspiration for a versatile countertop or standalone unit, where the horizontal beam has three vertical points of attachment and a horizontal one. The various appendages—a coatrack, a knife block, a mushroom-shaped storage unit, a lamp, flat surfaces, etc.—and legs themselves are plug-and-play to maximize the functionality of the minimalist form.

Ventura Lambrate deludente

Typographic Dating Game Makes Eligible Bachelors of Univers, Garamond

Will Avenir live happily after in the strong yet graceful arms of Adobe Garamond Pro? Can Martha Stewart-y Archer ever make it work with Eurostile? See for yourself by playing Type Connection, a fontastic online dating game created by Aura Seltzer, an MFA student in graphic design at the Maryland Institute College of Art. “Type Connection stems from an idea I had that typefaces’ personalities on paper are really very similar to those of people,” Seltzer told Mohawk Fine Papers’ Felt & Wire blog recently. “Typefaces also have certain physiques, voices, and virtues, and in certain designs, they would benefit from companionship.” Choose a single and get ready to mingle by selecting one of four strategies for finding a good match for your bachelor or bachelorette typeface. In addition to honing typeface-pairing skills, players explore typographic terminology and brush up on type history. Meanwhile, you’ll never look at Gil Sans the same way again—the British octogenarian is revealed to be an emotional eater who wears quirky spectacles.

Indian Lifestyle Brand Arttd’inox

0arttdinox001.jpg

Most of us have a good handle on what the Japanese, Scandinavian or Italian design aesthetics are. But countries like China and India, with populations that far outstrip the previous three, have yet to make an aesthetic dent on the world stage of industrial design. That will change, slowly but surely; and while it’s early days yet, an Indian brand named Arttd’inox has launched its maiden flagship store in New Delhi to celebrate Indian craftsmanship and design.
