Tuft Pula byNumen/For Use

Slideshow: Croatian-Austrian design collective Numen/For Use have suspended carpet-lined cocoons from the ceiling of a former church in Pula, Croatia.

Tuft Pula by Numen/For Use

Like their earlier installation during the DMY Berlin fair in 2010, the two overlapping funnels are made from several kilometres of adhesive tape wrapped like a web around a skeletal framework.

A four-metre-high ladder lets visitors climb up inside the structure, where the curved and furry red walls create a womb-like interior.

The installation will remain in place until the end of March.

Here’s some more text from Numen/For Use:

TUFT Pula

TUFT is an evolution of the tape concept into a more permanent,self-standing, transferable structure. Adhesive tape is used to generate the primary form of the object. The organic surface of the carpet is later achieved through precise division of the shape in two-dimensional segments, enabling traditional tufting technology. The development and production were executed in a Croatian factory Regeneracija, a former regional industrial giant.

Rough, industrial surface of the back side of the carpet is deliberately exposed to serve as a counterpoint to the invitingly soft, carnal interior. The result is a surreal simultaneous feeling of anxiety and thrill whilst entering into the installation.

The exhibition of the structure at the height of 4 meters in the middle of the former church in Pula, additionally enhances the tension and the sensational perception of the visitor. After the initial caution, the user starts perceiving the functional aspect of the installation, utilizing the softness and sound isolation of the installation and using it as an inward facing collective sofa.

Ground Barware by Michael Antrobus

Ground Barware by Michael Antrobus

UK designer Michael Antrobus has created a corkscrew and bottle opener by making just a few twists in flat stainless steel bars.

Ground Barware by Michael Antrobus

On sale at the MAK Design Shop in Vienna, each product is held in place with just a single weld.

Ground Barware by Michael Antrobus

Ground Barware is an extension of the stationery set he created while studying at Kingston University in 2009 (see our earlier story) which aimed to find domestic applications for products of the British steel industry.

Photographs are by Verena Melgarejo.

Here are some more details from Antrobus:

Ground objects are the outcome of a hands on material lead design process, characterised by experimentation and reduction. The result of working exclusively with flat steel using simple jigs and press tools. The bottle opener and corkscrew are the first objects from a wider continuation of the Ground series which began with a collection of stationery.

Each object is formed from a single length of 4000 Series Stainless Steel. First, a common tool is used to twist sections of each rectangular blank 180 degrees. A single twist forms a handle for the corkscrew and two opposing twists at the apex of the handle add the functional characteristic of the bottle opener. After twisting the blanks are taken to a fly press where radial bends are added. Once compete and correctly aligned the form of each object is secured with the application of a single precise weld, the weld is ground flush, before the objects are brushed to a matt finish.

Inspired :: Enamelware

B1

I have been obsessed with enamelware for many years now, and have quite the collection. My pieces are all vintage though, and finding them is getting harder – not to mention the price has increased substantially from when I first started collecting. That is why Falcon Enamelware makes this girl's heart flutter!

B2

My enamelware is the traditional ice white and blue rim, but Falcon has started to have some fun with this classic look by adding colors. I can't wait to see what they do next! – Tiffany King

Miike Snow – The Wave

The Gun So Nice, You Fire it Twice

0dbar4502.jpg

We all know this feeling: Whether you’re Chow Yun Fat in a John Woo movie or Harvey Keitel in Reservoir Dogs, there are times when you’re trying to pump two .45-caliber rounds into your opponent at the same time, but you get sick of having to carry two guns everywhere. “There has to be a better way!” you think.

0dbar4501.jpg

“This is so inefficient”

Well, that better way is finally here! European gun manufacturer Arsenal Firearms has produced the AF2011-A1 Double Barrel Pistol, designed to “commemorate the legendary Colt 1911-A1,” the .45 that turned 100 last year.

0dbar4503.jpg

“The stopping power of the AF2011-A1 is tremendous,” the company states. “Two bullets for a total of 460 Grains weight impacting at 1 to 2 inches apart (depending on the distance of the target) will knock down a bull.” That doesn’t seem disputable. As you can see in the video below, the kickback looks pretty ridiculous:

Mark Your Calendar: Donut City, SVA/BBC Film Fest, Metropolis State of Design, AIPAD Photo Show

  • In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, “Mmm. Donuts.” Splurge on L.A.’s finest (we’re partial to the sprinklebombs from Blinkie’s Donut Emporium) this weekend as ForYourArt opens its new activity space at 6020 Wilshire Blvd. with “Around the Clock: 24 Hour Donut City,” a tasty celebration that runs simultaneously with LACMA‘s 24-hour screening of “The Clock” by Christian Marclay. ForYourArt promises “a curated selection” of (free!) donuts beginning at noon on Saturday. Look sharp for the chocolate custard puff, as the selection will change every two hours. We hear that more enduring donuts will also be on offer, in the form of 1,000 pins made from Kenny Scharfs donut paintings. The artist’s zippy donutmobile will be parked outside ForYourArt all weekend.

  • Meanwhile, here in New York, we suggest hitting up the Maison du Macaron en route to Saturday’s SVA/BBC Design Film Festival, a slate of groundbreaking BBC films that have never been screened in the United States. Curated by the all-seeing Steven Heller along with D-Crit faculty member Adam Harrison Levy, the festival includes films on topics such as the history of the Barcelona chair, the future of the book, and the real life stories that inspired Mad Men (yes, George Lois will be there). The $15 run-of-the-festival tickets are going fast, so grab one here.

  • Once you’ve recovered from the weekend’s dessert-themed cinematic adventures, head over to Steelcase’s New York HQ, which on Wednesday, March 28, plays host to the State of Design, an annual fundraising event organized by our friends at Metropolis and the Education Legacy Fund. The evening of “open, constructive dialogue about what shapes twenty-first century design and how designers respond to our evolving culture” will feature a conversation with health policy guru Ruth Finkelstein (New York Academy of Medicine) and Quest to Learn founder Katie Salen (DePaul University) moderated by Metropolis editor-in-chief Susan Szenasy.
