Ex Libris by Chanan de Lange

Dezeen in Israel: designer Chanan de Lange exhibits two circular library bookshelves made from recycled school desks at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Around 20,000 books can be stored on the wooden shelves, which are fixed at different angles onto supporting metal columns.

Books can only fit onto the structure face down, so that the text on each spine is correctly orientated.

The library installation is on show inside the museum’s new wing, the Herta and Paul Amir Building, which we featured on Dezeen last week – see our earlier story here.

Here’s some more text from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art:

Chanan de Lange: Ex Libris

“Ex Libris” is a library composed of two rounded objects, capable of storing 20,000 books.

Ex Libris by Chanan de Lange

The work raises questions about the manner and “ease” of a book’s placement on a shelf and about the visitor/user’s progress through the space defined by the library.

The book accompanying the exhibition presents numerous libraries designed by De Lange throughout the years – private and public libraries, some of which are functional and some display objects – and points out the material, formal and technological connections between them.

Living in a World of Talismans

DiTullo_ring.JPG

A talisman is a physical object that purports powers and meaning beyond the physical. Humans have been making talismans for centuries, we are wired to give physical objects meaning. Take for example an engagement ring. A band of metal with a polished stone mounted on it. It has no hard drive, no 4g connection, no moving parts and yet I can’t think of another object that has a higher amount of meaning per ounce. It is the physical embodiment of a promise, of a future together. It embodies all the complexities of love, trust and hope in a single object. It is a tribal indicator to all who see it and a reminder to the wearer. Few gestures mean more than putting on an engagement ring.

DiTullo_watch_picasso.JPG
I believe we have the ability to infuse a measured amount of meaning into more of the things we use everyday. We live in a world of products. Most people don’t a own Picasso, nor do they live in a Frank Lloyd Wight home. They do however own watches, wear shoes, use toothbrushes and interact with their phones countless times per day. What would happen if we were able to put one tenth of the meaning from that engagement ring into the most common objects around us? How would that shift our behaviors? How can we expand our process for innovation to include meaning?

OneReceipt

Store all your receipts in a searchable online interface
OneReceipt1.jpg

Timed to launch for today’s Cyber Monday online shopping extravaganza, the new service OneReceipt provides a solution to keep track of all your proofs of purchase. Whether you have receipts from Black Friday, plan to accrue some more over the holidays or simply have an overflow of receipts and confirmations in your inbox dating back a couple years, you probably wish you had a better organization system.

OneReceipt5.jpg

We’ve been testing a beta version of OneReceipt, but at 12pm EST the free service goes live for the public. Simply “reserve your name” and add an email address—OneReceipt will automatically look through your email account and create searchable entries for the purchases you’ve made from online retailers from iTunes to Amazon. Instead of seeing the total amounts you spent on your card statements, OneReceipt imports itemized lists.

Though the service will import most email invoices, there are still some retailers it doesn’t recognize. For those instances, you can forward the email receipt to a personal OneReceipt email account. Not all of these forwarded emails will create line-item lists, but they will show up in your log. Plus, you can give stores your personalized OneReceipt email address when you make purchases, keeping your regular email addresses clutter-free.

OneReceipt3.jpg

For the analog receipts you accrue, the site is making it possible to email photos of receipts to your OneReceipt account, where they will be automatically imported, and then searched and tagged. The convenient organizing service, OneReceipt will be available beginning 12pm EST, 28 November 2011.

“Can we now say that OMA has grown up?” – Hugh Pearman

Dezeen Wire:
architecture critic Hugh Pearman has expressed admiration for the mature and understated nature of Dutch practice OMA‘s design for a new headquarters for merchant bank Rothschild on a sensitive site near the Bank of England – Hugh Pearman

Pearman suggests that it is “a miracle that a ‘foreign’ firm of architects with a reputation for the outrageous won the 2005 competition to redevelop the site,” but describes their approach to this project as “well-mannered, corporate, svelte, positively self-effacing.”

The area’s history demanded a low-key approach and Pearman adds that, although he wishes the building “wasn’t on quite such good behaviour,” its response to the brief “makes the right urbanistic moves and is enlivened by some flashes of wit.”

See interviews with OMA partners on Dezeen Screen and all of our stories about OMA here.
