Lady Gaga: Marina Abramović Copycat or Mega-Fan?

So apparently the internet gets all enraged when singer Rihanna and her director copies David LaChappelle, Beyonce and Co. borrows liberally from photographers Pieter Hugo and Ed Kashi, or when Beck, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Keith Schofield repurpose strange images found on the internet, but when Lady Gaga does the same, she’s applauded or the whole thing is just ignored. Maybe it’s because she describes herself as an artist with dreams of an exhibition at the Louvre? Whatever the case, the singer’s latest music video, You and I was released last week and it’s being viewed as either a) an homage to Marina Abramović, b) a slight copy of Abramović’s work, particularly her video piece, The Great Wall Walk wherein the artist walk toward one another across a wide stretch of China’s Great Wall (it’s sort of the same basic plot in Gaga’s clip), or c) the vast majority of people don’t know who Abramović is, so it doesn’t matter, or it’s good that the singer, who is a well-established Abramović fan, is trying to at least raise partial awareness of another person’s work (without every really doing that). To get extra, fine-tooth-comb picky, we recommend hitting up Flavorwire, who have put together this piece on “Lady Gaga’s Most Blantant Contemporary Art Rip-Offs,” which is just as it sounds, comparing her previous music videos to the art that, at times, seems that “inspired by” might not be the most accurate phrase, when “copied directly” would perhaps work better.

International Center of Photography Director Willis Hartshorn to Step Down

Willis (“Buzz”) Hartshorn, who has served as director of the International Center of Photograpy since 1994, will step down due to health reasons, the institution announced today. Hartshorn, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, will transition to a new, unspecified full-time executive role at ICP once his successor is in place. In light of the news, ICP’s board has formed a search committee and retained Russell Reynolds Associates to conduct an international search for a new director. “I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to build on the legacy of Cornell Capa, working with a talented staff and engaged board,” said Hartshorn, who joined the ICP staff in 1982. “I particularly appreciate their support, as I look ahead to continuing to serve the institution in new capacities.”

Among Hartshorn’s many achievements as director of the New York-based institution was raising more than $20 million in a 2001 capital campaign (the institution’s first) to move ICP from 94th Street to its current dual sites at 43rd and Avenue of the Americas. During his tenure, the endowment has grown from $700,000 to $11 million. Most recently, Hartshorn directed a planning process that “envisions a facility that would enhance integration of the exhibition, collection, and education programs,” according to a statement issued today by ICP. “Buzz and his team have led ICP from strength to strength throughout his 17-year tenure, from its exhibition programs, to its greatly increased endowment, to the breadth and depth of its educational programs and the photography talent trained by ICP, to its leading position in the world of photography,” said Jeffrey A. Rosen, president of the ICP Board of Trustees. “All are a testament to his legacy.”

Nikon Coolpix AW100

Take Nikon’s newest compact camera on an underwater adventure
aw100-front1.jpg

Nikon has not released a compact waterproof camera since stopping production of their popular Jacques Cousteau-approved Nikonos camera in 2001. Launching today for the consumer market is their answer to the modern adventure seeker’s needs—a durable, waterproof, freeze-proof and shockproof Coolpix camera called the AW100.

With an internal GPS system and full HD 1080p recording capability, the camera is ideal for documenting off-the-map escapades. The camera’s macro close-up mode is great for scuba diving, capturing intricate underwater fauna just one centimeter away with total precision, and its overall weight—6.3 ounces—makes it perfect for surfers who want to secure it in a zippered pocket while not in action or hikers concerned with every ounce of gear on their backs.

The Coolpix AW100 will sell for $380 in black, blue or orange from Nikon retailers worldwide.

Cabrela House by Orgânica Arquitectura

Lisbon studio Orgânica Arquitectura have completed a two-storey residence behind the solid stone walls of an otherwise ruined house in Sintra, Portugal.

A wall of windows at the rear of Cabrela House overlooks a small courtyard, which is bounded by the retained stone structure.

The new steel-framed house has a pitched roof that imitates the profile of both the existing building and the adjoining property next door.

A living room, kitchen and work studio can be found on the ground floor, while two bedrooms are located on the storey above.

Similar projects from the Dezeen archive include a concrete house atop stone building remains in the Swiss Alps, a Corten steel artist’s studio inserted into a ruined Victorian dovecote, and two houses where a steeply-pitched roof covers an old dry stone construction in the Spanish Pyrenees.

Vintage Automobiles at Pebble Beach 2011

Extensive car porn from the most prestigious annual automotive weekend
pebble-beach-vintage-main-4.jpg

Pebble Beach is to vintage automobiles what the Superbowl is to football and Art Basel is to art fairs. The group of events, anchored by the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, include shows, auctions and races each presenting the most celebrated works of automotive design and engineering. Drawing collectors, racers and enthusiasts from all over the world, we felt it was about time to see what this weekend is all about.

pebble-beach-vintage-main-3.jpg

Thousands of cars and tens of thousands of fans provide an incredible opportunity to see some of the most beautiful and most innovative examples of automobile design. Driving around town is a sensory overload, with whiplash-inducing head turns to see everything from an Ariel Atom 3 to a pristine 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible. It’s also an increasingly important event for auto manufacturers, many of whom introduce new cars, offer test drives of new models, and premier concept cars. Many of the events differentiate the years by hosting specific makes, models or celebrating anniversaries, and this year was no exception. We covered many of the activities and captured more than 2,500 images. Here are some of our favorites.

pebble-beach-vintage-main-7.jpg

The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Jaguar E-Type, Ferrari’s America and Superamerica models, Pre- and Post-War Racing Cars, Post-War Sports Cars, Super Cars, and Sports and Racing Motorcycles. The 1952 Glocker/Porsche Roadster was one of our favorites.

A highlight at The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was seeing so many Jaguars on the track celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the E Type.

Getting up close with the beautiful cars at the auctions—from barnyard finds to impeccably restored rarities of all types—provides unlimited fantasies of ownership. Favorites from The RM and Gooding & Company auctions included a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT and a 1956 Volkswagen Karman-Ghia.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which takes place on the celebrated 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links, is arguably the world’s most prestigious vintage automobile show. Each year 200 cars are selected to participate. This year’s focus included Stutz, Jaguar E-Types, Ferrari GTO, early Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts and Italian Motorcycles. We were there as the cars were driven onto the fairway at sunrise—an opportunity to not only see these vintage beauties actually drive, but also a chance to see the incredible pride, passion and focus of their owners.

Atelier Kurth’s "ATV1": From Entertainment Apparatus to Electronic Atavism

Luxembourg-based designer Daniel Kurth recently set out to solve an ultra-specific contemporary problem, itself a symptom of the seemingly endless horizon of media proliferation and the hardware that evolves alongside new modes of consumption: “As Apple launched its redesigned Apple TV, many users are wondering what to do with their first generation model.”

Kurth-ATVNixie_3.jpg

Instead of subjecting a beautiful, Jony Ive-designed device to a run-of-the-mill e-waste recycling facility, melting the components down to make hard-earned treasures, or re-purposing the circuitry for furniture, Kurth has come up with a more unorthodox solution: to turn the Apple TV into a proto-digital Nixie clock.

Kurth has reused every structural element, integrated a nixie controller board, tube holders and replaced the top acrylic plate with a new CNC routed PVC plate. The heavy duty tissue cable doubles as power cord and wall mount string. Similar to the Nixie Concrete Clock, the rearranged tubes allow the user to enjoy the playful interaction between the six tubes.

All electronic components in the fully functioning clock are assembled by hand.

528 – Vertical Panorama: the Rhine and the Birth of Tourism

Modern tourism is born of the Grand Tour. From the 17th century onwards, the brahmins of Britain travelled across the Continent for the twin purposes of education and entertainment. The Tour, an itinerant masterclass in antique culture and contemporary manners, gained popularity throughout the …
