Porsche unveils crowd-sourced 911 car designed by Facebook fans

Porsche 911 designed by Facebook Fans

News: German sports car manufacturer Porsche has turned to its 5 million fans on Facebook to crowd source designs for a unique 911 car.

To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 – and to celebrate the company reaching 5 million fans on their Facebook page – Porsche launched the 5 Million Car campaign. The project offered its social media community the opportunity to vote on design options for a one-off crowd-sourced car.

Fans were given the options to vote on specifications such as colour, wheels and spoilers. Porsche said that 54,000 fans cast votes via the Facebook page, selecting features such as a blue metallic paint, white 20-inch wheels and Porsche’s “Aerokit Cup” package, consisting of a front apron with additional front spoiler lip.

Porsche unveiled the crowd-sourced car earlier this week and is now running another competition via Facebook, offering its fans the chance to drive it at Silverstone racing track in the UK. Nine runners-up will receive a 1:43 scale model of the car.

Previously when Porsche reached 2 million Facebook fans it celebrated by producing a one-off Cayman S car that featured a portrait of their social media fans on the bodywork.

More than 820,000 Porsche 911s have been built, since it debuted at the IAA International Automotive Show in September 1963. The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany is celebrating “50 years of the Porsche 911” through to the 29th September 2013, with a special exhibition featuring the history and development of the car.

Last month, installation artist Gerry Judah spoke to Dezeen about his installation for this years Goodwood Festival of Speed that features three Porsche 911s soaring up into the sky like rockets.

Porsche builds a unique model based on the votes from its Internet community
Five million Porsche fans on Facebook

Stuttgart. “5 million reasons to celebrate!” – It was this slogan that got sportscar enthusiasts on the Internet involved in designing a unique Porsche 911 Carrera 4S model. The sportscar manufacturer based in Zuffenhausen, Germany, launched the campaign to show its appreciation for the five million “Likes” it has received from fans.

Porsche is now running a competition on its Facebook page (facebook.com/porsche) until August 18 for the chance to win a drive in the one-of-a-kind 911 model at the Porsche Experience Center at Silverstone in the United Kingdom. Nine scale models of the vehicle are also available for the runners-up.

Porsche 911 designed by Facebook Fans

As part of the “50 years of the Porsche 911” anniversary celebrations, 54,000 social media users voted on their ideal design for the Porsche 911. Working with “Porsche Exclusive”, the vehicle was painted in the unique colour Aquablaumetallic and kitted out with a range of equipment, including 20-inch Carrera S wheels with a special paint finish in white.

The unique model also features the “Aerokit Cup” package, consisting of a front apron with additional front spoiler lip and a new rear lid with fixed spoiler. A film set developed especially for this 911 model with the wording “5M Porsche Fans” along with custom-made door entry guards with the wording “Personally built by 5 Million Porsche Fans” make this vehicle a genuine original. It will soon be possible for all Porsche enthusiasts to experience the vehicle on the driving courses at Silverstone.

The runners-up in second place through to tenth place in the competition will receive a 1:43 scale model of the 911 Carrera 4S “5M Porsche Fans” vehicle. The competition is open to anyone with a Facebook account and a valid driver’s licence.

Gerry Judah created the sculptural installation for car brand Porsche at Goodwood Festival of Speed, which took place last weekend.

The structure features three iconic generations of Porsche 911, secured onto the end of 35 metre-long hollow steel plates that have been welded together.

It weighs just over 22 tonnes and each leg slims down at the base, becoming narrow enough for a person to wrap their hands around.

“I had to create a sculpture which personifies the energy and excitement of the car and the Festival of Speed,” Judah told Dezeen. “The 911 is a fantastic shape, so I had to think ‘You can’t deconstruct or embellish it’; so in this context the sculpture had to provide the right platform for the car to soar up and shine in the sky”.

Judah creates an enormous car sculpture for the festival every year. Past projects include a white knotted race track for Lotus and a bright red looping structure for Alfa Romeo. See more sculptures by Judah »

Porsche Pavilion by HENN

German architects HENN have created a streamlined pavilion with a curled-over steel roof for car brand Porsche at the Autostadt theme park in Wolfsburg.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

The structure is located in the south-eastern corner of the park, which is dedicated to the exhibition of cars and is located beside the Volkswagen factory in the north of the city.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

The curved roof of the pavilion shelters two doorways and cantilevers out towards a pool of water that winds around the park.

Inside the pavilion, a ramp linking the upper and lower doors spirals round an exhibition hall where some of Porsche’s cars are on show beside 25 silver miniatures.

Porsche Pavilion at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg

Architecture, landscape design and exhibition concept

A few weeks ago the Dr .Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG celebrated the opening of their Porsche Pavilion at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg in the presence of 200 guests of honor.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

For the first time since its opening in 2000, the theme park receives another building structure in the form of the new Porsche Pavilion, which expresses the importance of Porsche within the Volkswagen Group family.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

‘The building is unique and its construction is extraordinary. This pavilion also has a symbolic and historical dimension, as it hints at the common roots through which Porsche and Volkswagen have been connected from the very beginning and will continue to be connected also in future’, says Matthias Müller, CEO of Porsche AG. ‘As a worldwide leading automobile destination and communication platform for Volkswagen, we provide insights into our brands, values and philosophy for our guests. With the Porsche Pavilion we start a new chapter in the history of the Autostadt’, adds Otto F. Wachs, Director of the Autostadt.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

The organically shaped building is sitting – in mirrored location to the Volkswagen Pavilion- at the central axis of the theme park and offers 400 m2 of space for exhibitions and presentations. Its characteristic silhouette will become a distinctive icon amid the lagoon landscape of the Autostadt.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

Curving lines and exciting bends make the Pavilion a dynamic yet reduced sculpture with its characteristics derived from the Porsche brand image. As designed by HENN, the structure captures the dynamic flow of driving with a seamless building skin. Its lines pick up speed and slow down just to plunge forward in large curves with ever-changing radii.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

A matte-finished stainless steel cladding forms the flush envelope of this vibrant structure, creating the impression of a homogeneous unity, whilst creating a continuously changing appearance depending on light and weather conditions. At the entrance the pavilion cantilevers 25m over the lagoon’s water surface in front.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

Below the cantilever of the large asymmetrical roof, a sheltered external space opens up. This space is visually connected to the surrounding landscape, but forms its own acoustic enclosure, providing seating for a few hundred guests.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

Architecture and landscape, interior and exterior as well as roof and facade are brought together by HENN in their architectural concept of a coherent, flowing continuum. The external area around the pavilion was designed by landscape architects WES and integrated into the overall concept of the theme park.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

This is how the new piazzetta creates a connection between the Porsche Pavilion and the adjacent Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Pavilion by means of water features and trees. By walking around the sculptural Porsche Pavilion, further highlights of the Autostadt can be discovered.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

Similar to the monocoque construction technology used for lightweight structures in the automotive and aerospace industries, the building envelope forms a spatial enclosure whilst at the same time acting as load-bearing structure. A total of 620 sheets of stainless steel cladding with welded ribs were prefabricated in a ship-yard in Stralsund and assembled on site.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

Inside the pavilion a concentrated space opens up, allowing visitors to experience the sports car brand Porsche and its history, yet, casting aside the conventional limits and restraints to perception. The elliptically curved ramp embraces the dynamic principle of the architecture and leads the visitor to the lower exhibition stage areas. The exhibition and staging concept created by hg merz architekten museumsgestalter and jangled nerves combines evolution, engineering and the fascination of Porsche into an impressive image of future-oriented tradition. The Original Porsche – a 356 No.1 built in 1948 – is the starting point for a swarm of 25 silver coloured vehicle models at the scale of 1:3, on show in the main exhibition area.

Porsche Pavillon by HENN

Tradition and innovation, performance and day-to-day-practicality, design and functionality, exclusiveness and social acceptance: These four antagonistic terms characterise Porsche’s values and philosophy. They are also picked up as themes in short films. A film about the company history, sound stories about selected Porsche models as well as tablet PCs with further information about the exhibited vehicles make this visit’s experience perfect.

2013 Boxster

The first comprehensive redesign of the entry-level Porsche since its introduction in 1996
2013-Boxster.jpg

With a welcome redesign, the 2013 Boxster is once again the sexy gateway model to the rush of owning a Porsche. The brand unveiled the car’s most comprehensive design overhaul since its introduction in 1996 this week at the NY International Auto Show, showing off a 2013 that builds on the iconic 550 Spyder to be lighter, lower, wider and more powerful than before.

2013-Boxster-back.jpg

The 2013 amplifies the thrill of driving a mid-engine car with a body made from a composite aluminum and steel that reduces weight without compromising strength. The rear wing deploys automatically as in previous iterations but is now flanked by LED taillights. Under the hood the new model’s flat-six engine is available in both a base and upgraded S. This divide reveals output differences of 265hp vs 315hp and a top speed of 164mph and 173mph in favor of the S.

2013-Boxster-2.jpg

To improve handling the new Boxster is now equipped with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), a helpful bit of technology that redistributes torque by internally controlling braking on rear wheels, making the Boxster even more of a roadster than ever. The 2013 Porsche Boxster will be available Summer 2012 with a base sticker price of $49,500.
