Social dimension of sound

Another Day, Another ‘Accidentally Painting Over a Banksy’ Story

0115banksy.jpg

The problem with street artist Banksy is that he leaves most of his valuable street art on the street where terrible things might happen to it. Case in point, after both thefts and numerous incidents of having his very valuable work accidentally removed or painted over, such has happened again, and the cozy confines of his hometown of Bristol no less. This time around, the BBC reports that Saeed Ahmed, the new owner of building that once housed a nightclub, decided to clean up the walls a bit and in the process whitewashed a Banksy that the community had known and loved for the past decade. However, unlike with the other times this has happened, the building’s owner feels terrible about it and is reportedly looking into “options to see if the whitewash can be removed and the painting restored

He added: “I didn’t know it was valuable and that’s why I painted over it. I really am sorry if people are upset.”

We feel badly for the guy, but it’s also just given us a million dollar idea: we’ll create a Banksy look-up index and sell it to local business owners. They can consult it before painting over graffiti, just to make sure they aren’t sitting on a) a beloved piece of artwork by a famous artist, or most important, b) something that could fetch them hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The following information is from the publisher:

Featuring 50 cutting-edge projects from around the world, this international survey of workplace design is the ultimate resource for anyone creating the workplace of today or tomorrow. Abundantly illustrated with plans and photographs throughout, the book is divided into three colour-coded sections. Part 1 showcases low-cost workplaces created for small companies. Part 2 is a collection of medium-sized projects, all of which place a strong emphasis on environmental sensitivity and getting the most from a restricted budget. Part 3 is a selection of offices designed for large companies; here too the aim is to be as eco-friendly as possible, as well as to provide spaces that promote productivity, creativity and enhanced interaction between employees.

Total Office Design by Kerstin Zumstein

The projects in each section are located across the globe. From Selgas Cano’s semi-subterranean, tubular office in a forest near Madrid, to the ‘living skin’ of Harmonia 57 in São Paolo, each project proves that our workplaces needn’t be boring, expensive or harmful to the environment.

Rub Kandy – Anamorphosis

Giochi ottici in bilico fra arte concettuale e street art realizzati in grandi spazi abbandonati, perfettamente integrati con l’archeologia urbana e l’architettura industriale.

Lady Gaga Might Become a Kind of Intern for Hat Designer Philip Treacy

It’s always a bit weird when celebrities decide they’re going to take an internship in some profession they’re not currently employed in. Architecture buff Brad Pitt sorta kinda (but not really in the slightest) interned for a while with Frank Gehry (though he really didn’t). Kanye West has taken on a number of apprentice roles in the fashion industry, most notably as a summer intern at Gap. Now it’s apparently Lady Gaga‘s turn. Clearly a bit more free from her Polaroid creative directing duties after the spring launch of one of her products for the company, Gaga looks to be following through with her plans to intern with Philip Treacy, the famous hat maker whose work was all the talk at the royal wedding. Months ago, it was learned that the singer had submitted her resume to the UK-based milliner, and now the internet is abuzz following an interview with Treacy recently did with The Observer, wherein it sounds a bit like she might actually starting showing up, working long hours, and fetching coffee. Though we don’t have the slightest doubt that none of those tasks will ever be performed by her (that’s what her interns are for). Here’s his answer about Gaga:

She plans to. She’s already visited me. This is what happened: one Monday morning, four burly bodyguards arrived — Lady Gaga’s security team — to check out the security of the building. I looked at them as if to say: what?! Who is going to take a pot shot at Lady Gaga? Anyway, she is young, talented and peculiar — which I like. The Brit awards were the next night and she said to her people (I loved this): “Can somebody buy me some brown underwear for tomorrow?”
