Not the L.A. You Know: Carmageddon Captured on Film

carmageddon.jpg

It’s L.A.’s version of that Times Square shot from Vanilla Sky: The city bereft of its traffic monster, here shot by filmmaker Ross Ching rather than Cameron Crowe.

Carmageddon was the name given to the expected traffic apocalypse created by last weekend’s shutdown of the 405, and Ching captured recently revisited the anti-Carmageddon on video. [EDIT: The original is from last May; he posted the new one on Thursday, in anticipation of the weekend closing. Thanks Alissa and Brit.] Good thing he got there early—the shutdown was supposed to last until Monday, but workers finished demolishing the Mulholland Bridge (the reason for the shutdown) 17 hours earlier than anticipated.

A message of love

Appearing as part of the Folkestone Triennial Fringe, Jonathan Wright’s Rare Love installation captures radio transmissions of love stories told by local writers and characters.

“The work celebrates the history of the area of Kent surrounding Folkestone in regard to the rich scientific and literary history that exists there, Wiright says. The six-metre-high sculpture captures radio transmissions of love stories told by local characters, such as HG Wells, Joseph Conrad, Logie Baird and William Harvey. The intention is to reinvigorate local interest in this history.”

“The whole tower works like a radio antenna,” he explains. “The letters are outlined in copper wire that works as the aerials, there are tiny transmitters that deliver sound files to the receiver in the lower part of the tower where there is a listening booth. When you are listening to the work you are aligned with a view of the sea. The signals tune in and out and are mixed in with general radio noise, the howls and squeaks of short wave radio.”

The work is supported by the Arts Council and several other sponsors. The ‘arms’ made of text, write the words ‘Rare Love’ in shadow on the floor and track across the ground like a sundial as the day progresses.

Rare Love can be found at the Harbour car park, Harbour Approach Road, Folkestone, Kent. It is up until September 25.

Carpet with Bic pencils

Degree shows 2011: Kingston illustration

The graduates of Kingston University’s illustration course sent over a selection of their work as featured on prints, cards and, enjoying something of a resurgence in 2011, the humble tea towel…

First up is a flow chart tea towel (above), one of three sent it by Bonnnie Moriarty, Jess Lewin, and George Mein (two more are shown below, though we’re unsure as who did which one as they’re not credited individually). Entitled Use Me, the trio of designs aim to highlight the often contradictory nature of advice given out to students (not from CR we hope):

Drying the dishes: often a time for quiet reflection, in this case, on one’s email success:

These packs of cards are by Ellie Tzoni and Emi Hazlett – Hazlett’s are embossed with a wolf design.

While this one is by Nina Cosford:

This paperchain, revealing a ‘fleet of foxes’, is by Emma Shoard:

And these three prints came in nice presentation pack from (from left) Marin Matsuo, Jack Hughes, and, again, Ellie Tzoni:

Marin was also keen to show her work as used on a product, with this bag complete with rather charming tapir:

This print, Are You Covered? is by Tom Clohosy Cole:

And this bear is the work of Sarah Maycock:

Jack Hughes again really impressed with his self-produced newspaper (like the tea towel, another very popular medium) which features quotes from a series of personal heroes:

Thanks again to the gradutes of the illustration course at Kingston for taking the time to send their work in.
