The Wall’s Sausage Dog Returns

<object width=”560″ height=”349″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/4fe16XkwJkY?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US”></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/4fe16XkwJkY?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” width=”560″ height=”349″ allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true”></embed></object>

A new ad for Wall’s Sausages by Saatchi & Saatchi London sees a man adopt a surreal method of saying thanks when his wife serves up his favourite meaty snack for tea.

The ad, the first of a new series for the brand, stars a miniature dog called Alan, in a reference to the original Wall’s dog, which was first used in an ad devised by McCann Erickson in 1993. Inspired by a talking dog that appeared on the TV show That’s Life, the ad showed an owner trying to teach his dog to say ‘sausages’, but all he would say was ‘Wall’s’.

Alan the dog is a more contemporary figure, blessed with the ability to play an electronic keyboard and rap in the style of The Streets. He will undoubtedly soon have his own Facebook page too.

After Launch of New Music Video, Beyonce the Latest to be Accused of Stealing Photographers’ Ideas

Over the years, there have been countless accusations of theft when it comes to music videos liberally borrowing ideas from other sources. Examples pervade, like the lawsuit against singer Rihanna and her label filed by photographer David LaChapelle who claimed a recent video of hers had directly swiped ideas, or the complaints raised by artists and the internet after an inspired-by-photos-found-on-Fffound music video appeared for a collaboration between Charlotte Gainsbourg and Beck. Now the latest to take some of that heat is Beyonce, who premiered her latest cinematic epic, “Run the World (Girls)“, this past Wednesday. The Guardian‘s Alex Needham went through the video, picking out the various elements Beyonce and director Francis Lawrence had directly “borrowed” from, most notably the work of photographers Pieter Hugo and Ed Kashi. “Is it homage, or appropriation?” Needham asks. We’ll leave it up to you to decide what’s wrong and what’s right. But before you make your final decision, we highly recommend reading the last two posts (written during LaChapelle-Rihanna-gate) at 30frames, which tackles the entirety of the question, calling out some of the “we’re shocked by this sort of theft of ideas!” internet-based hypocrisy.

Helsinki wants to… see something else

Student Elissa Erikson organised a campaign to replace the advertising on 21 bus shelters in Helsinki earlier this year with the message: “I want to see something else.” In response, site owners JCDecaux asked designers to create new work for each space…

Late last year, over 1,400 people got behind Erikson’s campaign “Haluan nähdä muutakin” (I want to see something else) and donated 6,000 Euros in order to purchase the ad space on 21 different sites from JCDecaux.

The message on the inaugural poster, shown below, reads: “I want to see something else – 1,458 people wanted to free this space of commercial messages.” The poster features a list of ‘wishes’ from each of the donors detailing what they would ideally like to see in their urban surroundings.

Following on from Erikson’s action, JCDecaux responded to her challenge by commissioning 11 designers to take one of the ‘wishes’ and turn it into a poster.

Shown here is the full set of posters, which includes contributions from James Jarvis, HORT, Mike Mills, Kokoro & Moi, Antoine+Manuel, Byggstudio, Mario Hugo, Niessen & de Vries, officeabc, Project Projects, and Rami Niemi. The Facebook page for the campaign is facebook.com/Muutakin.

Thanks to Teemu Suviala, creative director of Kokoro & Moi, for getting in touch about the project.

Tax Evasion Charges Against Artist Ai Weiwei Finally Revealed

0812weiwei.jpg

Finally, nearly two months after his original arrest and detainment by government officials in China, and only recently reported to still be alive by his wife who was allowed to visit him, the charges against artist Ai Weiwei have been revealed. According to a very brief story originally published by the state news agency Xinhau, police authorities in Beijing have stated that the reason for Weiwei’s arrest stems allegations that his company, The Beijing Fake Cultural Development Ltd., “intentionally destroyed accounting documents” and that the artist himself had “evaded ‘a huge amount’ of tax.” Though officials still stand beside their claims that these “economic crimes” are the sole reason Weiwei was arrested and remains confined, critics of the government and friends of the artist still believe that “the charges seemed designed to justify Ai’s arrest and ‘restrict his personal freedom.’” The brief release about why he was arrested was filed Friday evening, but as the LA Times reports, was removed from Xinhau’s news wire shortly thereafter, though not before it had already disseminated across other news outlets.

David Mascha
