UK Motorcycle company and design student collaboration is a Triumph of design

0triumphbiad001.jpg

I love the brake-handle corkscrew, the disc-rotor record player and clutch-lever cutlery. When UK-based Triumph Motorcycles recently collaborated with Birmingham Institute of Art and Design students, rather then asking them to design concepts for future bikes, they had students create lifestyle products using extant parts from their Bonneville T100 model.

To be able to go through the parts bins of a major manufacturer and build whatever you want is like a dumpster diver’s dream come true. The results of the collaboration were pretty surprising, and you can check out the full spread over at Design Boom.

Creating a home inventory

Creating a home inventory is a good idea for a number of reasons:

  1. A complete inventory is good for determining how much home owner’s or renter’s insurance you should be carrying.
  2. It is also priceless after a disaster or if something has been stolen to help with completing forms and proof of ownership for your insurance claim.
  3. If you have an item stored in your basement or attic, the inventory can save you time by giving you the precise place to look to find that item.

It is best to have a copy of the inventory on your home computer, but, most importantly, have a copy saved online. If you don’t use an online backup service like DropBox or BackBlaze, simply e-mail a copy to your Gmail account.

The new Mac App Store has a program available for purchase ($10) called Compartments that looks to be simple to use. There are numerous other programs out there, I simply suggest finding one you like and using it. The inventory software programs are nice because often they’ll prompt you to remember an object you might have overlooked otherwise. An Excel spreadsheet could also work, though, if you have a keen eye. The point is to use whatever system is easiest for you that you’ll actually use.

Have you done a home inventory? What program did you use? Tell us about your experiences in the comments.

Here’s some text from Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec:

We are pleased to present a new rug collection, called Losanges, designed for the Spanish brand nanimarquina.

Losanges by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

We have always been captivated by the traditional Persian rug, especially by the very old kilim savoir-faire which we see as a delicate mix of rusticity and fineness.

Losanges by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

We have been lucky to see this project carried through by the craftsmen of Northern Pakistan who managed to skillfully combine thirteen colors through the geometrical rhombus shape.

Losanges by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

As well as being crafted by hand, the Afghan wool is also spun by hand, which allows for some unique color tones to be highlighted.

This subtly random technique makes each lozenge slightly different and each rug, a unique piece.

The Losanges collection will be presented at the nanimarquina booth Hall 8 F36 during the Maison et Objet trade show (January 21-25, 2011).

Flat Mirrors by Big-Game

Designers Big-Game of Lausanne have made a series of mirrors from car windscreens.

Flat Mirrors by Big-Game

Called FLAT mirrors, the project involved collecting windscreens from cars with flat windows: a Citröen 2 CV, Renault 4L, Volkwagen Beatle and Fiat Panda.

These were then silvered to create a mirrored surface.

Getting the Story Straight on St. Louis’ Pruitt-Igoe

While much of the most recent national talk about St. Louis has been about revitalization, there’s a history in that city, and many like it, about architectural and urban planning projects run afoul. Such is the subject of what looks to be a fascinating documentary, The Pruitt-Igoe Myth: an Urban History. The film, directed by Chad Freidrichs, tells the story of America’s urban renewal projects in the 1950s and 60s, St. Louis’ famous Pruitt-Igoe framing the discussion. Built in the mid-50s and designed by Minoru Yamasaki (who also designed the World Trade Center towers), the housing project was seen as the savior of the inner city working class. Yet some decade and a half after it was built, living conditions at deteriorated and the city had it demolished. On a base level, the project was labeled as a failure of colossal proportions. The film, however, looks to want to dig into the stories of how it came to be, what went both right and wrong, and in general “set the historical record straight.” Here’s some thoughts Archinect has on the film and Pruitt-Igoe itself and here’s the trailer:
