Big Ideas, Little Books: TED Launches Digital Books

Brainy nonprofit TED is turning its passion for “ideas worth spreading” into slim volumes that it hopes readers will consider worth downloading. The technology, entertainment, and design mavens today launched TED Books, an imprint of short nonfiction works that will be available as Kindle Singles in Amazon’s Kindle Store. “TED Books are to Books as TED Talks are to lectures,” wrote TED curator Chris Anderson in an e-mail to the TED community. “They’re short, pithy, riveting. They’re designed to express a single big idea in a way that can be absorbed in a single sitting.” At between 10,000 and 20,000 words, TED Books fall between a TED Talk and a traditional book. They are priced at $2.99 each. The first three titles (pictured) are by TED conference alumni who detail an idea—promoting well-being on a national and personal level, a bold new world of human-directed evolution, and why you shouldn’t worry so much about the previous two ideas—alluded to in each of their talks. Six more TED Books are in production, and discussions with other authors are underway. Might we suggest that TED tap one of the design minds that have graced its stage in years past? The digital covers of the TED Books, which place their gesticulating authors against a spotlit black ground, have a goofy Sesame Street-meets-Instructional-Language-Video aesthetic that makes us flinch.

Persons of Interest

A slick Brooklyn barber shop offering services in a humble way
poi1.jpg

In recent years the men’s grooming culture has thankfully evolved, but with steep prices and an equally pretentious atmosphere many salons seem to cater more to the classy gent than the downtown dude. Steve Marks aims to change this with his relaxed Brooklyn barber shop Persons of Interest, an outfit offering solid cuts and sophisticated services but with simplicity at the forefront.

poichair.jpg

Marks first came upon the idea for Persons of Interest when he visited Sal’s, the original barber shop that occupied the space. Remaining unaltered for 27 years, the shop naturally captured the feel and design of a classic 1970s grooming station. Determined to retain that atmosphere, Marks went above and beyond to keep original features such as the classic barber pole, original chairs and the coastal mural on the back wall.

The attention to detail is also reflected in the level of service on offer. Walk in the door and Marks is the first to give you a warm greeting and a beverage (beer included) from the cooler. If the reading material or conversation isn’t peaking your interest you can always browse the classic suitcase filled with old passports and cash, on display in case someone needs to get out of town quick.

The talent with scissors is just as impressive as the space itself; all of the barbers in Marks’ shop are attentive and skilled, with conversation and advice to match. What they offer is very unique for the Carroll Gardens neighborhood—a high quality cut with no frills and a price tag that’s easy on the wallet. The shop got its name because Persons of Interest “sounds vaguely criminal, vaguely sinister” but you won’t find any shady dealings here. The real beauty of the barber shop is that it fills a gap for men who want a really good haircut ($40) without the glitz of a grandiose salon. To check out this slice of 70s, visit the Persons of Interest website where you can see a full list of their services, including beard trims and more.

3D Food Printer at the French Culinary Institute

fabathome_foodprinter.jpg

Lovable geeks that we are, we’ve always got a watchful eye on developments in 3D printing technology. Its amazing to see interest spreading through a whole host of disciplines. Core77’s very own Matt Brown has even speculated on how such technologies might influence food production in his design fiction work.

Well, according to a report that appeared on CNN Money yesterday, Matt’s fantasies may not be so far-fetched. Working alongside the opensource Fab@Home project, students and researchers at Cornell have been experimenting with printing quite a variety of edibles.

The team are seemingly looking to get these babies out into mass production—aiming for a price point comparable to that of an iPad.

Without typical hands or markings, the Gravity watch uses two rings that resemble rotating comets to indicate the time.

The fatter, inner ring marks the hours while the narrower outer ring shows the minutes.

The rubber strap does not have a fastener but instead wraps around the wearer’s wrist. It can be made tighter or looser by bending the strap’s stainless steel core.

Beauty Pick Me Up – Haute Couture Inspired

imageIt’s Fashion’s biggest week with couture labels proudly parading their latest Spring 2011 collections down the runway. Intricate details, sumptuous fabrics and dramatic fanfare all add to the excitement, but it’s the runway beauty that’s are truly inspiring as a look that we can wear everyday ourselves!

Some of fashion’s biggest names have shown in Paris already and we love the runway make-up! From the bold lips of Dior and Armani Prive, to the emphasized cheekbones and subtleties of Chanel, we’ve chosen three of our favorite haute couture beauty looks from Spring 2011 and are showing you how to try them for yourself!

Click on the slideshow to see some fave picks!

The Bold Femme Fatale – Taking a cue from Dior’s couture show, this look is full of sex appeal and femininity with bold red lips, arched brows and liquid liner.

Keep skin flawless with a gentle exfoliating face wash and use just a touch of blush, if any, to let the bright lips and thick liner take the spotlight. Want your red lips to stay moist and last longer? Apply a thin layer of Carmex or Vaseline to lips before application.

The Woman of Power – Show them you mean business with this seriously sexy look inspired by Chanel. It’s all about the cheek bones so emphasis them by sucking in and applying a generous dose of matte foundation to the hollows, being sure to blend, blend, blend towards the temple. Add just a touch of rose gold tinted blush at the apples.

Keep the rest of the look subtle with thinly applied liner, a few coats of mascara and a nude/ pink lip.

The Natural Beauty – Take a cue from the fresh-faced natural beauties of Bouchra Jarrar’s couture show by subtly emphasizing what you already have! Keep skin tone even with a tinted moisturizer and a light dusting of mineral powder.

Brow tint and a lengthening mascara bring out the eyes while a pink-hued nude lip adds to the natural look. A light sweep of blush right under the apples of the cheeks finishes the look.

SCP New Products 2011

SCP designs, produces and retails high-quality products for the home. We are a quintessentially British brand that produces designs that have an international resonance. In recent years we have expanded our product portfolio and now make a range of accessories, lighting, textiles, rugs and smaller furniture to complement our core range of upholstery. We apply the same principles to all of our products, we make things that are beautiful, sustainable and built to last.

On show for the first time is the Munro chesterfield sofa by Donna Wilson, the Oscar sectional sofa by Matthew Hilton, three side and low tables by Terence Woodgate, Lee Kirkbride and Kay + Stemmer called Coltrane, Pelutho and Otto. A new full-length mirror by Sylvain Willenz also makes its international debut as does an updated version of American designers Rich Brilliant Willing’s Timberly hall rack. In terms of accessories and textiles, there is an expanded range of the Sprig Collection of ceramics by Donna Wilson and the new fabric collaboration between Donna Wilson & SCP, the traditionally made Welsh fabric, Bora Da. SCP is an experimental brand with a long-time love of production methods. Last year our travels to India resulted in the development of a new Rug Collection, in collaboration with Donna Wilson. The rugs are hand-made, using three different techniques: flat-weaving, hand-looming and hand-tufting. All stages of the production process take place under one roof using these time-honoured techniques. The updated Rug Collection on show at Maison & Object comprises new versions of the flat-weave kilim called Mountain Spot, the hand-loomed Fairisle and two hand-tufted rugs: Scope and Purl.
