In Brief: Etsy Raises $20 Million, Kikkomans Solar-Powered Soy Sauce

sunny_cupcake.jpg

  • Etsy, the craftacular online marketplace that is featured in the Cooper-Hewitt’s current National Design Triennial, has raised another $20 million from investors. This, the company’s fifth round of funding, was led by London-based Index Ventures. With 5 million members and 125 employees, Etsy is in the midst of its first profitable year, according to founder and CEO Rob Kalin. “The two biggest costs running Etsy are our servers and our employees,” he wrote Friday on the company’s “handmade” blog. “We want to make sure we can secure the best of both, and this investment helps us here.” Meanwhile, Adam Freed has just joined Etsy as chief operating officer. A veteran of Google, Freed is also the owner/guardian of Hank, a dog that bears a striking resemblance to a Muppet. We smell an Etsy store opportunity!

  • In other crafty business news, Kikkoman has seen the light. The soy sauce specialist is going smartly sustainable by installing solar panels on its Folsom, California factory. The new photovoltaic system will be up and running by late September. It will not only significantly reduce the need for fossil fuel-based electricity to power production but also allow the company to sell solar electricity back to the grid when the facility is not in operation. Installed as a fixed carport over the company parking lot, Kikkoman’s solar system will have the added benefit of shading cars from the Caifornia sun.

    TW35 40 by Tamawa

Belgian designer Hubert Verstraeten of Tamawa will present these watches made of Bakelite at Maison & Objet in Paris this week.

    TW35 40 by Tamawa

Named TW35 40, the watches have cases in a choice of eight colours, with the face and hands in either silver or black.

    TW35 40 by Tamawa

Maison & Objet takes place 3-7 September.

The text that follows is from Tamawa:

Whilst waiting for the arrival of the young Belgian designer this October at Bon Marché’s Galerie Imaginaire, Tamawa will be making an appearance at the Maison & Objet Show in Paris with a collection which has been diversified by the addition of a new watch to the accessory and jewellery range. Playing definitively on the purity and simplicity of Bakelite beads, Hubert Verstraeten, the artistic director of the brand, is proposing a brand new watch model larger than the previous one. Called the TW35 40, it is made entirely in Europe. The face, made up from a 35 mm bead is available in the brand’s usual colours. The interior of the watch face is available in silver and black, just like the hands, thus permitting many combinations with the 8 Bakelite colours.

The black leather bracelet is available in a double or single length.

Exercising radical style, Tamawa exclusively uses Bakelite beads. It maintains a history in design which takes off exactly from where the mythical “Hang it all” by Charles & Ray Eames stopped: 8 colours (the official snooker colours) made from 2 to 16 cm diameter beads, this is the designer Hubert Verstraeten’s scope for the unlimited conception of a range of objects. Today, the collection which began with jewellery, is expanding into accessories and objects for the home (lamp, photo stands, coat stands) designed by Hubert Verstraeten and guest designers such as the Big Game collective or Sylvain Willenz. In Japanese, Tamawa literally means “bead on a steel ring.” The young Belgian designer is relying on the shift in focus to propose an elegant and fun range. Having moved away from its “snooker” image, Bakelite has immediately regained its pure and profound nature, the plastic qualities of which go beyond the snooker room. The idea of ‘play’ is there however, but in a formal way: infinite possibilities – from precious objects to furnishings – with this small sphere, as basic as it is essential.

    A+: The Young Designers’ Platform

Our favorite three emerging designers from the American Design Club’s latest show

An opportunity for emerging designers to showcase their work, A+: The Young Designers’ Platform took place earlier this month during the Accent on Design event at New York’s International Gift Fair. The American Design Club curated the event, aiming to highlight raw new creatives and their recent contributions to the design world. Seven out of ten of this year’s winners also had a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility, bringing simple solutions to the world’s environmental concerns to the forefront of the design world. We picked three of our favorites newbies in the world of jewelry, compost, and cast iron cookware, who each snagged a space on the list of finalists, rounding out the eclectic list with their innovative new designs.

    Bin by Fuccillo
    fuccillo_lemon.jpg fuccillo_flower.jpg

Vancouver design studio Fuccillo recently turned its attention to composting—a simple but important part of a sustainable urban lifestyle. Making it easier for environmentally-conscious citizens who already freeze compostable scraps and drop them at their local farmers markets, Fuccillo created a stylish new “bin” using hard plastic and flexible silicone.

    fuccillo_flex.jpg
    fuccillo_colors.jpg

The container stays in the freezer until it’s time to be dropped off, eliminating stench and pests by pausing the decomposing process. When ready for emptying, the silicone bottom stays flexible and pushes in for easy removal of the waste (without having to reach inside and scrape it out). Next month the bin will hit shelves online and in stores across the U.S. and Canada for $45 each.

    Hila Rawet Karni

    aplus_hila_1.jpg

Hila Rawet Karni specializes in “industrial jewelry,” using materials like paper and leather to construct geometrically intricate patterns.
    aplus_hila_2.jpg

We like the way the extraordinary level of detail and a passion for industrial design combine in the Melissa necklace in particular. Consisting of a series of interlocked textured, leather pinwheels, the design embodies the beauty of her creative mathematics. Paper, leather, plastic and spring necklaces come in various shapes and sizes at Hila Rawet Karni’s Etsy store.

    Borough Furnace
    radiators-600x450.jpg BF-nightpour041.jpg

Jason Connelly and John Truex were cousins before becoming business partners based on their shared admiration for industrial design and environmental responsibility. The two finally teamed up to create Borough Furnace, a Murfreesboro, TN-based cast iron cookware production team.

    BF_mold.jpg BF_prototypes_Masked.jpg

Upcycling iron from scrap radiators or other junkyard items, the team creates high-quality cookware, including a popular dual-handle frying skillet, in their own backyard. The products are entirely recycled and handmade, not to mention classically-designed for a lifetime of use and beautiful craftsmanship. London Design Festival 2010 Preview: Robots in Trafalgar Square

pIf you’re one to fantasize about having control over large-scale robots in a public space (to do good, not evil, of course), Kram/Weisshaar has teamed up with Audi to make your dreams come true during the 2010 London Design Festival./p

pAs this year’s Trafalgar Square Installation, Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram designed a href=”http://www.outrace.org/”Outrace/a, an interactive installation in which the public – both those in Trafalgar Square and a remote global web audience – send instructions to eight large-scale industrial robots, on loan from Audi’s manufacturing line. Through the Outrace website during the Festival, participants can send text messages from phones and computers, which are then transcribed as 3D light messages by the installation./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/events/london_design_festival_2010_preview_robots_in_trafalgar_square_17267.asp”(more…)/a

Minarc’s RUBBiSH sink, made from old tires

pI have to recaulk my bathroom sink, an infuriatingly small-bowled object that splashes water everywhere yet is astonishingly heavy. It’s a solid chunk of porcelain that doesn’t deliver good functionality for the amount of matter it consists of, and I dread having to pull it off the wall cleat so I can scrape off the bad original caulking job, which was apparently done while the contractor was having a seizure./p

Widely-used kitchen workstation design from the early 1900s

    pimg alt=”0bulthaup00123.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/0bulthaup00123.jpg” width=”468″ height=”338″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pLast week I covetously posted on A HREF=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/bulthaups_painfully_beautiful_tool_cabinet_for_kitchens_17201.asp” Bulthaup’s “tool cabinet” for kitchens/A (above), which I’m in love with. Well, turns out the thoroughly modern piece of furniture has a rather antiquated antecedent: The Hoosier Cabinet (below), a kitchen workstation from the early 1900s./p

    div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/08/0hoosiercab001.jpg” width=”468″ height=”287″ alt=”0hoosiercab001.jpg”//div

pIn those early days of the last millenia, when more people starting moving into cities, apartments and especially tenements didn’t come with built-in counters and cabinets. The Hoosier Cabinet–named for its original producer, the Hoosier Manufacturing Co. of Indiana–was the thing you needed. Cleverly thought out, Hoosiers were an impressive piece of industrial design from an era that arguably predated the term “industrial design.”/pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/widely-used_kitchen_workstation_design_from_the_early_1900s_17268.asp”(more…)/a

Zaha Hadid Returns Home, Commissioned to Design for the First Time in Her Native Iraq

    0421hadid.jpg

After years of living and building in Europe, Zaha Hadid is finally going to be working at home. Bloomberg reports that she has landed the commission to design a new headquarters for Iraq’s Central Bank in Baghdad, her hometown she last visited more than thirty years ago and left in 1972. Since then, she has been living in and basing her incredibly successful architecture firm out of London. The bank’s current headquarters, which Building Design informs was designed with “marble-clad reinforced concrete with few exterior openings,” was recently attacked by suicide bombers just two months ago, along with armed insurgents, killing 15 people in the attack. Meeting in Istanbul with developers, Hadid has now been hired to design an entirely new structure, presumably with even more additional safety and security features in places in limit the danger of future attacks like these. Here’s a bit:

A spokesman for the practice said of the Istanbul meeting: “This preliminary workshop concentrated on the vision of the project’s objectives, success criteria and the operational functions that will be performed by the bank through the coming decades as a national institution that represents the symbol of sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq.”

…The Hadid spokesman said the brief made it clear the new bank would act as a symbol of the new Iraq. “The new headquarters will enable the monetary authority of the CBI [Central Bank of Iraq] to perform its continued role serving stability, development and economic growth in Iraq,” he said.
