Three places clutter hides at work

Clutter plagues the workplace in many ways, but these three areas are most often the worst offenders:

  1. Filing cabinets. At some businesses, filing cabinets are merely graveyards for old papers. Keep only the papers and files that you must and recycle (or shred) the rest.
  2. Language. Using buzz-words and let-met-try-to-impress-you language in your writing and speech can cause confusion, reduce productivity, and waste resources. A good rule of thumb is that if you can find the phrase in Unsuck-It‘s dictionary, you should think twice before using it. Direct language that is simple to understand will save you time and improve your communication skills.
  3. Top of your desk. The only items that should be on the top of your desk are the equipment you use at least once a day and the project you are working on currently. Pack up your project when you move on to the next task (I like using one flat file per project), and store in drawers and cupboards items you don’t use daily.

Meetings and cable clutter typically round out the top five hiding spots for clutter in offices. Where is the clutter in your office? Schedule 10 minutes a day to address your clutter issues and in a few weeks your office can be the last place clutter will be able to hide.

Seven Deck Totem design for the “Splinters & Papercuts” exhibit in Florida

I like the bold colours and strong lines, it feels like this would translate well into a pretty intense tattoo. More projects on his site (reminds me a bit of Hydro74).

CutPaste Kicks Off Third Digital Design Tournament

cut&paste.jpgLove Layer Tennis? Get off the sidelines and seize an opportunity to show off your design skills—live on stage. Our friends at Cut&Paste are on the hunt for graphical savants ready to battle it out in their third global digital design tournament, which makes a strong case for design as spectator sport. Building on the success of its 2009 world tour, the design booster organization will host competitions in 2D, 3D, and motion design in 10 cities (from New York to Seoul, with first-time stops in Latin America) to scout and spotlight talent for the big show: the Global Championship in February 2011. This year’s tour will also feature Show&Tell, a new series of presentations that promises “an insightful how-to with some of the brightest minds in the design community.” Have nerves of steel and a golden portfolio? Cut&Paste is now accepting applications to compete. The deadline for U.S. entries is next Friday, September 10, while nascent design stars in Europe, Asia, and Latin America have until October 15 to apply. And if the idea of a live-action digital design smackdown has you scratching your head, check out the below video.

A faux fur writeboard

pimg alt=”furboard5.jpg” src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/furboard5.jpg” width=”468″ height=”624″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pWe’ve fallen in love with this simple but ingenious project from Portuguese designer a href=”http://www.goncalocampos.com/”Gonccedil;alo Campos/a: emDedo/em is a writeboard made from artificial fur, “a much more comfortable message board, with no need for erasers or pens.” Leave a note by running your fingers over it, erase it by smoothing the faux fur all the same direction. So fun./p

Here are some more details from Fendi:

FENDI and Aranda\Lasch present Modern Primitives
An installation combining technology, craftsmanship and tradition

FENDI consolidates its relationship with the world of Limited Edition Design by partnering with the New York based architectural studio Aranda\Lasch with a two-step project starting at Venice Biennale of Architecture in August 2010 and seeing its completion at Design Miami/ in December 2010.

At the Venice Biennale of Architecture, starting on August 26th, FENDI will be supporting the installation the architectural duo have been commissioned by the Pritzker Price Winner and Biennale Curator Kazuyo Sejima.

The installation, called Modern Primitives, explores technological sophistication with hand-crafted elegance.

Modern Primitives by Aranda\Lasch

Modern Primitives will be an installation composed of foam structures, derived by small primitive pieces connecting into larger ones that can be sat on, leaned against, held in one’s arms. This setting will describe a space of dialogue where events and conversations are conducted, recorded and broadcast.

The installation site will be located at the end of the Arsenale.

The result is a multiple level installation that will find its ultimate essence and completion in the Miami part that will embody and sublimate the world of design, fashion, art and architecture.
