Tote Bags book, call for entries

Seasonal tote bag by Playne Design, kindly sent in to CR as a Christmas present

Designer Jitesh Patel is currently putting a book together on tote bag design. It’s set to be published next year and the deadline for submissions has just been extended to 15 January…

The basis for Patel’s book will be, as he writes on his call for entries website, “to plot the journey of tote bags from their functional roots, to their manifestation today as a fashion statement” and will include “the most striking, inventive, ironic and original of printed examples”.

Tote Bags is set to be published in 2010 by Laurence King.

For a dose of those “ironic” bags – totes, after all, are a bone of contention for many – check out Patrick’s post I am not another smug canvas bag from earlier in the year. Also worth checking out is Dmitri Siegel’s designobserver.com piece on canvas bags’ green credentials, which we subsequently ran in CR.

Full submissions guidelines for Patel’s book are at his blog, toteprints.wordpress.com.

(And, finally, here’s a shot of Playne’s pressie. They sent the bag over in a small cardboard box that can be re-used to house pencils and the like. Nice.)

Lovely video about hat making, old style

John Rory Fraser’s 16mm black and white film, We Continue in the Old Style, visits Paul’s Hat Works in the Richmond district of San Francisco.

Paul’s is a 90-year-old men’s hatter, now under the ownership of four young women. The film explores their position as women at the heart of a traditionally male-dominated business, as well as their dedication to quality, handmade goods.

Thanks Gabriel!

Bag Of The Week: The ‘Efram’ Hobo by Tory Burch

imageDesigner Tory Burch may be best known for her signature logo on flats seen on every uptown girl last year but did you know that she also designs clothes, bags and jewelry? Her designs are always classic and understated (and that doesn’t mean boring!) and can take you from brunch with your friends to a romantic date at night. One of her latest designs really caught my eye and I’m trying to impress Santa right now so he’ll bring me one for the holidays. The leather Efram Hobo may look plain and unassuming head on, but tilt it a bit and there are square metal pailettes (aka sequins) on both sides! The roomy interior is big enough for all your daily essentials and can even fit file folders and most laptops. The sequins mean that you can do a quick outfit change and take the bag for a night out on the town too.

What: the Efram Hobo by Tory Burch
Price: $550
Where to Buy: Shopbop
Who: facadeindreams was the first to add the Efram Hobo by Tory Burch to the Hive.

Box Animation

Date Chosen to Break Ground on Eli Broads New Museum in Michigan

1214broadground.jpg

With all the talk in California about where it will be and who will he pick to design it, we’d nearly forgotten all about Eli Broad‘s other new museum, the one at Michigan State University, designed by Zaha Hadid. MSU is Broad’s alma mater and he and his wife have thus far given close to $30 million to see the museum built and have enough money available for operations and to start up its collection. Likely to finish a lot sooner than whatever winds up happening in his own backyard, a date has been chosen when ground will finally be broken and construction will begin:

The university will break ground on the museum on March 16, 2010. Eli Broad, who donated the naming gift for the project, and Zaha Hadid, the internationally known architect who designed the building, are expected to attend.

The groundbreaking will be followed by 23 months of construction and a 2012 museum opening.

Ommwriter

This image has no alt text

Brand new writing software for everyone who’s been using TextEdit because they hate how gross Word looks.

Best of all, it’s totally free! Get the latest beta version here (if you don’t see the links on the left side of the page to download just click a bit below the logo, some kind of browser bug I think).

Ommwriter is essentially the bare minimum in terms of a writing program. It offers a full screen experience, various soothing auditory accompaniments, and an auto-hiding tool bar (all of which look great). Personally I can do without all the sound effects, but totally appreciate a cleaned up screen.
