Sweet! An ice cream bench and a gummy bear chandelier

jellio-bench.jpg

Design firm Jellio, makers of the oversized, rubber gummy bear lights and giant Revell model kits as wall art (blogged here in 2005), has added three new pieces to their repertoire of home furnishings made in the image of giant candies and toys.

The Ice Cream Bench is just that: a giant ice cream sandwich you can sit on, made from solid foam, canvas, and white velvet. In the Music Table, an oversized toy xylophone doubles as a tabletop, and we’re told that it really works.

Also, keep a lookout for The Candelier, to be unveiled this January: it’s a three foot wide lighting fixture made form 2,000 fake, acrylic gummi bears. Each one takes a month to build, and will be sold in an edition of ten.

Type Tuesday: Bluebird

Bluebird from Cameron McKague on Vimeo.

I recently received an email from Cameron McKague (his work was featured in our “The Lost Art of The End” makeover series in issue 2), to let us know he has partnered with designer Jennifer Griffiths to create a typography-driven film based on a poem by Charles Bukowski. “It’s filmed in one continuous shot and all the lines from the poem have been integrated/designed into elements of the scene by both of us. We were trying to give it a timeless mid-century feel.” It was an ambitious project that involved designing each of the artifacts and then filming it so that each would coincide with the narration of the poem.

Cameron has some beautiful business cards for his company, Vitae Design. Visit his site for more from his portfolio.

Get Personalized Attention And Eco-Friendly Service At Hotel Arista

imageEco-friendly hospitality is now a reality in Naperville, Illinois, a picturesque town about 30 miles outside Chicago. The newly arrived Hotel Arista uses an impressive 70 percent natural lighting and eschews all paper products, conducting business instead via television or phone. Meanwhile, in-room “nosh boxes” (aka minibars) feature only regionally grown and organic snacks– with the sole exception of Diet Coke. But the green movement is just one aspect of the eco-chic hote’ls appeal. Rather than being passed from bellhop to desk clerk to concierge upon arrival, each guest is appointed with his or her own personal host who can handle everything from luggage to special requests. Click “See Video” for a tour, then visit Chicago’s Modern Luxury page to see more luxe amenities the city has to offer!

Consultancy Holiday Cards?
by rkuchinsky in general design dicsussion

Just wondering how many of you who run a small consultancy (or other) send out holiday cards or gifts to clients or contacts?…I’ve seen pretty much everything across the board from email PDFs to custom expensive gifts. Just wondering what you might be doing and what you’d like to get and the impact it would have if you received one as a client or potential client.

Ideas on Ideas Eric Karjaluoto Launches Video Series

We’ve long been supporters of design/business/etc. enthusiast Eric Karjaluoto and have linked to his essays for years, be they about Microsoft‘s new ad campaigns or deciding whether or not author Tim Ferriss was fanning the “no spec” flames purely for publicity’s sake. But now, in support of the recent release of his new book, Speak Human: Outmarket the Big Guys by Getting Personal, you can finally hear Eric’s advice the way it was meant to be heard, Canadian accented and all, via his new video series. It’s basically just him speaking to the camera in various settings and about various things, but if you’re a fan of his essays, you’ve come to expect great things and you won’t be sorry. And prolific as ever, he has up nearly a dozen videos already, so you have some watching to get to this morning. Here’s the very first, his introduction:

A quick spot of festive furtling

This charming little magazine insert fell onto my desk the other day and has since caused much infantile amusement. It’s for Fentimans lemonade and introduces one to the concept of “furtling”. Click through for the cheeky reveal…

In a rare example of an insert that you actually pick up and look at, this strange postcard invites the reader to “place the portion of the hand indicated against the aperture above and review the scene overleaf”.

Essentially, you make a fist with one hand and hold it under the card – thus you are engaged in “furtling”; the art of simulating anatomical features using the hand.

Haha. Risqué.

The point seems to be that to make for a more satisfying lemonade beverage, you should “up-end and invigorate bottom”. Clearly a good excuse to run a nice little bum gag in an ad campaign.

We think the creative is by Sell! Sell! as they’re also behind the recent Coca-Cola-kicking posters for Fentimans, illustrated by Steve Noble:

Barnardo’s Interactive Poster

BBH has created this interactive poster for children’s charity Barnardo’s, which is displayed on a bus stop on Tottenham Court Road in London…

The poster site features a film, shot by Frank Budgen, of a distressed-looking girl sitting alone in the corner of a room. At the bottom of the image is a traditional-looking collection tin that passers-by can place money into. When a coin is placed in the tin, the girl looks directly out of the frame at the person contributing and gives them a half-smile (as shown in the image below).

The interactive poster forms part of a larger campaign for Barnardo’s titled Turning Children’s Lives Around, which also includes a TV spot, currently airing in the UK.
