Amid the Christmas shoppers clearing out my shelves, I’ve been working on the design for the upcoming Winter issue of UPPERCASE magazine. The final files will be sent to the printer by the first week of January and I’ll keep you updated about the expected ship date to our subscribers.
Enjoy the previews below: it’s a glorious issue! Thank you to Leigh Wells for the beautiful cover illustration.

Architect Li Xiaodong has completed a school in Fujian, China, which forms a bridge over a creek between two castles. (more…)
Encouraging individuality, Anne et Valentin design and create eyewear that makes you “delighted to be yourself.” After feeling frustrated with the lack of frame choices to sell in their Toulouse shop, they designed their own small collection in colored acetate, pleasing customers and opticians alike.
Now, at nearly 30-years-old, the French label constantly designs entirely new models, putting a twist on classic styles or adding interesting colors and patterns to their existing spectacles. Each pair looks distinctly quirky while still blending seamlessly and enhancing the contours of each face.
The handmade frames span titanium to plastic, black to multicolored and include a line of vintage-inspired sunglasses. They sell at specialty stores around the world.

If you cherish the likes of Little Lulu, Richie Rich, and Archie and the Gang (“Eeps!”) as much as we do, you’ll want to put that Barnes & Noble gift certificate (the chances of receiving one at this time of year are 78.6%) to good use and procure a copy of The TOON Treasury of Classic Children’s Comics (Abrams ComicArts). Edited by the dynamic duo of Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly, the volume collects sixtysome tales from the golden age of comic books, which according to our sources was the late 1930s through the early 1960s. Chapters such as “Hey, Kids!” and “Funny Animals” highlight the work of master comics writers and artists, including John Stanley, Walt Kelly, and Basil Wolverton, along with brief biographies. For Steven Heller, who reviews the volume in the new issue of Eye, The TOON Treasury induced “soothing pangs of nostalgia” and led him to make some new rodent friends.
For me, the biggest joy was the introduction to Walt Kelly’s little known Hickory and Dickory in “Help the Easter Bunny.” Who can top this exchange between the two protagonist mice, when Hickory says: “Now that we’re out of sight, let me ask you—does the Easter Rabbit lay Easter Eggs?” Dickory responds, “Golly—” Hickory adds: “Because if he does, it leaves us in a rather awkward position.” Dickory: “You mean—” Hickory: “Exactly—he told us to supply the eggs—and that can mean only one thing…” Dickory: “Have you ever laid an egg?” Ahhh, to return to the important questions of one’s youth, rather than grapple with the health-care debate and war and peace in the Middle East.

Aside from the obvious sage greens and cranberry reds, the holiday season also conjures up thoughts of cool shimmery shades — frosty lilacs, icy blues, and snowy silvers and opals. So if red lipstick really isn’t your thing, you can still go the frosty route with your beauty routine and look just as festive! The key to cool shimmers, like any makeup trend, is to stick to one part of your face at a time and not overdo it — you don’t want to look like someone double-dog-dared you to stick your whole face to a frozen telephone pole! If And the best part? These sparkly shades are perfect for New Year’s Eve, too, and are wearable enough to take you through the winter season!
