Guest curator on Etsy!
Posted in: Uncategorized
I’m thrilled to be a guest curator today on Etsy’s inspiring blog, The Storque. (hmmm curious coincidence with the name, there!) I’ve selected just a few of my favourites and they’re all creative people who have been involved in UPPERCASE magazine in one way or another. Click here to read the full post and to find links to great Etsy sellers! If you’re a regular reader of UPPERCASE and have an Etsy shop, please feel free to include a link to your shop in the comments below.
(If you’d like to advertise your Etsy store in the winter issue, we have a full page dedicated to independent sellers. Ads are inexpensive, starting at just $72 Canadian for subscribers. Click here for more details and here to see past ad pages in our magazine.)
Thanks, Etsy, for providing so much inspiration, eye candy, connections and great purchases to us all!
Neutra Face : An Ode On A Typeface (A Bearded Poker Face Parody)
Posted in: UncategorizedOK Go x Moritz Waldemeyer at Design Miami
Posted in: UncategorizedBlending design, technology, music and fashion on one stage, German designer Moritz Waldemeyer and Silvia Venturini Fendi (of the fashion label that bears her name) created
an interactive performance for the hard-working band OK Go. Wearing suits with LED displays, the band plays furry, glowing Gibson guitars covered in leather that shoot lasers from the neck. The lasers leave traces that react to the music in real-time on a video wall alongside the band, completing the spectacle with imagery evoking guitar strings or sound waves.
The collaboration between LED maestro Waldemeyer and the cheeky band marks their second together, a natural fit for a tech-savvy musical outfit who also know a thing or two about eye candy. “Our brand of performance—super-saturated, super visual, super fun—is precisely the right arena for his design,” says frontman Damian Kulash.
Their first project dates back to 2007 when the partnership resulted in the LED “Vegas Jackets,” which feature displays sewn onto the back meant to emulate slot machines. Still in use today, check out our above video to see them in action. The below documents last night’s performance of their new single “WTF.”
The performance, which debuted yesterday, will run every evening this week, through 5 December 2009, at Design Miami.

Lady Gaga Opens Up About Work, Sexuality In January’s ELLE
Posted in: UncategorizedLady Gaga is on the cover of the January issue of ELLE looking staggeringly normal– a quality we’d never thought we’d attribute to the songstress. Of course, “normal” in her case also happens to be quite pretty, which isn’t always the first thing you notice when you take into account her affinity for outrageous, scene-stealing costumes and heavy makeup. In the issue she opens up about recurring themes in her work, saying “I feel that if I can show my demise artistically to the public, I can somehow cure my own legend. I can show you so you’re not looking for it. I’m dying for you on domestic television– here’s what it looks like, so no one has to wonder.” Somehow I’m convinced we’ll always wonder about Lady Gaga even with this new insight, especially if you consider that seeing a pared down version her is about as rare as seeing her don pants, but it’s definitely intriguing to see a new side of the enigmatic artist.
