London Design Festival 09 Preview: Dream Ball by Unplug Design

unplug dream ball.jpg

The London Design Festival is just about to kick off so it is time to give you a little preview of what to expect. We will be out and about to cover the most interesting stuff around, reaching from the young gunslingers to the old stagers.

For example there is Dream ball, a brand new soccer ball, which is made by recycling famine relief packaging. Since buying a soccer ball is a luxury for children living in third world countries, they usually make one out of ropes and trash. Aid provided from the UN and RED CROSS to people living the third world is usually packaged in boxes, but most of them contain medication, food and other fundamental commodities. Unplug design wants to give something that will put a smile on childrens faces, a toy that can give them hope and joy. They have redesigned relief packaging in a way that after it has served its primary purpose, it can turn into different types of balls depending on the size of the boxes. They are made by simply cutting by hand the perforated cardboard boxes and weaving the pieces.

The makers are Hwng kung chan, Jin song kyou, Lee hak su, Han min hyun and Jun jin of the Seoul based design studio Unplug . Showing as part of the Designersblock, the designers describe their design approach as follows: “Pull out the plug from the system and plug into the community.”

Hot In The Hive: Bin Bin Wastebasket

imageThey say beauty comes from within, so that’s why we try to eat fruits and vegetables, drink lots of water, and get a good night’s sleep every night. So it’s no wonder why our hair is naturally shiny, skin is glowing and eyes bright… right? Ok, maybe we could eat better to look better but that can wait after the frenzy of Fashion Week is over. In the meantime, I’ve decided to take a tiny break from all the fuss about the runway and thinking about my home instead. The Bin Bin Wastebasket is a perfect example of the inside contents looking like the outside! Like the crumpled rough drafts of your next Great American Novel or those pesky credit card bills, this wastebasket looks like a giant piece of crumpled paper. Put this in your office and everyone will know where to throw away the junk mail (instead of leaving it on your desk) or it could be a stylish umbrella catcher on a rainy day. The possibilities are endless with this unique design!

Price: $54
Who Found It: facadeindreams was first to add the Bin Bin Wastebasket to the Hive.

Ji#345;#237; Barta: Stop motion and Soviet-era architecture

The Design, a beautiful stop motion by Czech animator Jiří Barta, uses architectural drawing to visually underline the suppression of individualism by the designers of the Soviet-era tower blocks that surround Prague.

If nothing else, it’s a stop motion to put most of YouTube to shame.

CollegeCandy Wishlist: Adidas Ballerina Sneaker-Flats

imageI love flats. I practically wear them every day and to all occasions. I can’t even remember what I used to wear before I started slipping on those cute and comfy babies. Wait, yes I do. It was sneakers (love my Chucks), but I had to find something else after I realized that old school Nikes are not acceptable for all occasions. Like job interviews. And now Adidas has taken my two favorite forms of footwear and morphed them into one mega shoe: the Gazelle Ballerina. Not to quote Miley Cyrus or Hannah Montana or whoever she chooses to be today, but you do get the best of both worlds with these shoes. Revel in the cuteness and convenience of a flat and the stylishness and comfort of a sneaker with its rubber outsole for added support. So if, like the Spice Girls, you’ve got a little Posh and a little Sporty to ya, these shoes are your perfect match. And if you find yourself running from parties when campus security shows up, these are probably right for you too. It’s the girls in stilettos who always get caught. Hit up CollegeCandy for more cute footwear finds!

Dixons gets honest

Travelling around the London Underground yesterday, we came across this surprising campaign for online electronics retailer dixons.co.uk…

Eschewing Dixons’ usually bland ad approach, the posters (which were created by M&C Saatchi in London) cheekily recognise the brand’s position in the electronics market, which is pretty much at the bottom. The ads acknowledge a habit that many of us may recognise with some guilt – that we will get advice about expensive goods at a more upmarket store, but then nip online to make the actual purchase, where it is cheaper.

Using the familiar fonts from a number of popular London retailers – Selfridges and John Lewis are shown here, and other iterations include Harrods – the ads open with a description of the benefits of shopping in these stores, before then reverting to the Dixons font with the line “then go to dixons.co.uk to buy it”. The self-harm/awareness continues with the ads’ tagline, which is “the last place you want to go”.

We’re used to hearing about how brands are going to be more transparent in the modern age, but it makes a pleasant change to actually see such self-knowledge put at the centre of an ad campaign, and it will be interesting to see how successful it proves to be.

Betsey Johnson to Design Eloise-Inspired Room at the Plaza Hotel

0918eloplaza.jpg

Do you hold fond memories in your heart of writer Kay Thompson and illustrator Hilary Knight‘s Eloise books? Or better still, have children who have taken a liking to them? If so, and you happen to have lots of disposable income, now’s your chance to experience some of the book, as fashion icon Betsey Johnson will be designing a suite at the Plaza Hotel in New York based on the series of books staring that precocious youngster and her pink and black-striped home within the famous hotel. The suite hasn’t been finished yet, as Johnson has been wrapped up with all the trappings of Fashion Week, but will begin work designing it just as soon as this week ends. However, the Plaza already has their reservations pages up and running and those who stay in the suite will have access to its two bedrooms, receive a copy of Eloise, some postcards, and free “Super Duper Sundae from In-Room Dining.” Rates start at $895 per night, or $3,595 per night for the “Live Like Eloise Slumber Party Package.”
