The Enicycle: One wheel, a motor, and balance assistance

This is so fresh: Slovenian inventor Aleksander Polutnik’s motorized Enicycle is one wheel of fun, with gyroscopic stabilization-assistance helping to keep it upright. Watch as The Gadget Show’s unicycle-challenged Ortis Deley learns to ride one in just under five minutes.

Polutnik originally built the thing for fun and to ride alongside his unicycle-riding girlfriend, but the popularity of the device has prompted him to seek mass manufacturing.

Product design: Prototypes, patents, patience…then profits

0popnet.jpg

That there is the PopNet, a collapsible fishing net with a flexible outer ring that the user can twist into a figure-eight and fold, reducing the diameter from 30″ to a conveniently carry-able 10″.

It was devised by Phillip Campbell, who observed fishermen struggling with packing away bulkier nets. Campbell, who works as a homebuilder but happens to have a Masters Degree in Industrial Design from North Carolina State University, got to work on a better design.

Ten years later, the product is on sale in stores and Campbell has sold the rights to fishing tackle manufacturer Frabill.

“You come to understand that it can take many attempts and prototypes to get an idea right,” said Campbell, whose PopNet patent is one of three he holds (it has 12 years left). “I went through a lot of trial and error to get this right.”

…”What I often see is inventors with a really good idea, but they’re just not able to add the horsepower to do the marketing and everything else,” [said Jeff Kolodzinski, Frabill’s vice president of marketing].

The sediliegi² chair is a lounge chair for two person, and probably the most romantic winner of this year’s One Good Chair competition.

Finalist Helene Cany writes: “I chose a place, near to Turin in Italy, where we can see the Alps. Many lovers come to this square because it is really romantic and the view is beautiful. This chair is made of molded cork. And the cork come from the Italian cork tree. Its shape allows transport easily and to rest comfortably in the sun watching the Alps. The shape is inspired by the cars designed in Turin (Fiat 500 and Ferrari).”

Great to see inspirations, materials, and research coming together. The two other finalists, Andrej Blazon and Azul Cadenas, were inspired by the Daughters of Charity and beautiful estancias houses in Argentina. Watch all chairs here

Las Vegas is your home? Prototypes of the three finalists will be fabricated and presented at the upcoming Las Vegas Market on September 14!
