Necessary Luxuries: Beauty Products Worth the Bank!

imageThese days, more than ever, it’s important to be smart with your hard-earned money. Frankly, it’s rather unfashionable to go drop serious dough at Barney’s and walk out with several thousand dollars of clothing that won’t be in style next season. However, when it comes to beauty products, some investments are worth it. Of course, keeping your face, hair and nails well-coiffed never goes out of style. I’ve compiled some of my favorite pricier beauty products for your investment consideration. At the top of my list is Chanel’s Precision Gommage Microperle Eclat, which is a finely beaded exfoliating gel that leaves your face smooth and smelling like roses. What’s more, if you use just a dollop once or twice a week, the $45 tube can last you a year. As long as we’re talking Chanel, have you tried their Nail Vernis colors? I know $23 seems like a lot for nail polish, but it goes on smooth and lasts a long time, with a nice shiny finish. One of my daily favorites is Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar Moisturizer, which is an extremely lightweight, oil-free, hydrating moisturizer. Ranging from $15 for half an ounce to $60 for four ounces, it ain’t cheap, but let’s just say seeing is believing with that product. Check out my slideshow for other necessary beauty luxuries!

Curating the white house art collection

The word is that President Obama and the First Lady are admirers of bold abstract paintings.

The Obamas are sending ripples through the art world as they put the call out to museums, galleries and private collectors that they’d like to borrow modern art by African-American, Asian, Hispanic and female artists for the White House. In a sharp departure from the 19th-century still lifes, pastorals and portraits that dominate the White House’s public rooms, they are choosing bold, abstract art works.

To find out more on their choices you know what to do.

Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall…

imageLet’s be honest — we all kind of love checking ourselves out. Whether we’re sneaking a peek in the reflection of a street-side window, or openly (well, privately, really) gussying up to dance and sing in front of an imagined-audience-of-many, mirrors play an important part in our lives. Hell, I’m not sure many of us could go a day without seeing a mirror at some point. The best mirrors, however, are ones that are beautiful on their own, without the help of our lovely selves standing in front of them. And the best of mirror-makers are those that consider themselves artists, creating wonderful masterpieces that sometimes seem better fit in a gallery than, say, above your bathroom sink. Turn your home into a gallery that bills your face as the main attraction with the interesting accents that these artists have designed to make these mirrors of our pretty faces. Check out this slideshow to take a peek at some of the coolest mirrors out there!

Anna Wintour, Coco Rocha, Or Iman: Who Stole The Show At The American Ballet Theater Spring Gala?

imageAny type of award show or gala or red carpet event is exciting. The flashbulbs and the paparazzi, the celebrities and of course, the main event itself! But, we all know the most appealing and fun part of these functions: Who is wearing what? The American Ballet Theater held its 69th Annual Spring Gala on May, 18th and dozens of celebrities and famous names and faces came out in their most elegant floor-sweeping gowns to help celebrate the event. Held at the Metropolitan Opera House, a steady stream of celebrities and beauties sashayed past photographers and showed off their beautiful gowns. Anna Wintour showed her fashion roots in an ankle-length gown with origami pleating details and an elegant mottled pattern that showed off her impressive figure. Coco Rocha stunned in a bright, ocean blue, off-the-shoulder ruffled number that contrasted beautifully with her fiery hair and porcelain skin. Iman showed who was top model in an eye-catching, one-shouldered ball gown in peridot green, playing up her skin’s gorgeous tone. Which style-savvy fashionista do you think stole the spotlight? Take our poll and tell us your opinion! Photo credit: PR Photos

Play

This image has no alt text

The paradox of taking “play” seriously means that there has been very little academic research on the importance of play until very recently. Dr. Stuart Brown’s research shows play is not just joyful and energizing — it’s deeply involved with human development and intelligence. Click here to see the video.
