Ask Unclutterer: Cable clutter and wall-mounted televisions

Reader John submitted the following to Ask Unclutterer:

I am mounting a flat screen TV over my fireplace and the cable and electric receptacles are several feet away. What is the best way to eliminate the cable clutter in order to give it a clean look?

The first thing I need to say is that mounting a flat screen television above a fireplace almost always nullifies the warranty (even if you don’t use the fireplace, and even if it’s gas).

Secondly, codes in your area might require that you install a plug immediately behind your television above your fireplace. In many states, it is against code to have exposed wires above a fireplace. I know this is true in Virginia because two of my close friends learned this when they recently had their homes inspected.

Noting these two things, it is best for me to recommend that you hire a licensed electrician to: 1. Wire a new outlet above your fireplace, and 2. Wire HDMI cables (an any other cables you need) back through the wall to a nearby outlet. You might also consider hiring a professional installer to ensure that your TV is well secured to the wall.

You will still need a component console to hold your DVR, cable box, Blu-Ray player, or whatever boxes you want to connect to your TV. Set up your component station next to the HDMI wired outlet. Then, replace the damaged drywall, paint up the patches, and call it a day (or, more likely, a week).

You will have to decide if putting a TV over the fireplace is really worth it: Your TV instantly goes out of warranty, you have to pay a licensed electrician to install a new outlet that is up to code, you have to repair your wall, and you still need a console in the room to hold your components. But, for some people, the time, effort, and expense will be worth it.

Thank you, John, for submitting your question for our Ask Unclutterer column.

Red Carpet Finds For Vintage Fashionistas

Just like some gals only watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, some gals only watch the Oscars for the fashions. And if you’re one of these red carpet junkies, then I recommend that you train for Sunday’s big night by reading Made for Each Other – Fashion and the Academy Awards by Bronwyn Cosgrave. You’ll find all the stories behind the beautiful dresses that have graced the Oscars since the awards began in 1929, plus get an inside look at the designers and the stylists who make our favorite celebrities look so glamorous. Now I’m hoping I’ll see at one drool-worthy vintage gown strut its stuff at the big awards show, and for any celebrity still deciding what to wear, I’ve gathered some fabulous vintage gowns to consider. Of course, these are stunning choices for any red carpet moment in your non-celebrity life as well, so just click the slideshow to see the selection.

Stingray Rocker

alt= //ppIf you’ve ever seen deep-sea nature documentaries where scuba divers grab hold of stingrays and ride along, then you’ve fantasized about gliding through the deep blue sea similarly propelled. This rocker by a href=http://www.fredericia.com/show.asp?lang=ukamp;s=furnitureamp;mk=amp;mt=-1amp;mid=11Thomas Pederson/a is about as close as you can get without having to put on the snorkel and mask. Though no one’s going to stop you from doing that if you’re so inclined. |via a href=http://www.notcot.com/archives/2009/02/stingray_rocker.phpNotCot/a|br //p

Calling All Image Makers…

London-based screenprinting club, Print Club London is hosting another show of screenprints following the success of last years Blisters On My Fingers exhibition. Like last year, there will be 35 exhibiting artists (last year’s artists included Jon Burgerman, Steve Wilson, Richard Hogg, Serge Seidlitz, Jody Barton, Andrew Rae and Si Scott), 35 editioned and signed prints by each, selling for £35 a piece. Only this year, Print Club is offering the chance for all and sundry to be in the show which will take place in July at MC Motors in Dalston, London…

Some of the exhibits at last year’s Blisters On My Fingers Show

Illustrators and artists can submit designs for a chance to be one of the selected 35 exhibitors at this year’s Secret Blisters show. Simply send a low res version of your B2 (500 x 700mm) screenprint design to postershow@printclublondon.com no later than
2 April.

Another difference at this year’s show will be the secret element: Each exhibited print won’t be signed by the artist – to encourage people to buy the posters they like, rather than buying simply for the sake of who the artist is. This aspect of the exhibition may be, we suspect, driven by the fact that prints by street artists Eine and Pure Evil sold out instantly at last years show, possibly bought by people thinking the value of them might “do a Banksy”…

Another shot of last year’s show in the wonderful MC Motors venue which is, handily, practically next door to Print Club’s Dalston studio

Artists Gang Up on Damien Hirst for Being a Greedy Bully

0220hirstwar.jpg

Back in mid-December, we reported on artist Damien Hirst‘s fight with a sixteen year old artist named Cartrain for liberally borrowing an image of his famous multi-million dollar diamond skull (entitled For the Love of God) to use in a collage. The young artist backed down and handed over to Hirst the couple hundred bucks he’d made off the sale of the piece, much to the disgust of people like the Telegraph‘s Victoria Holman. In further response to all of this, a group of artists in the UK, including KLF member Jimmy Cauty and famed designer Jamie Reid, have banded together to both raise money to pay Cartrain back for his losses and to poke fun at Hirst and share copyright information. What’s more, they’re daring Hirst to try anything legal with them:

“Unlike Cartrain and his gallery, we are not intimidated by lawyers, and if an injunction is issued, we will simply ignore it on the grounds of freedom of speech,” Cauty wrote to the Independent.

The prints, grouped under the title For the Love of Disruptive Strategies and Utopian Visions in Contemporary Art and Culture, include various depictions of the infamous skull. One of them shows a man with the skull for his head reading a book titled A Guide to Copyright and Intellectual Property Law.

All of this is hot off the heels of Spanish artist Eugenio Merino‘s book he released showing a sculpture of Hirst shooting himself in the head, with the title For the Love of Gold, and the author being quoted as having said, “If he killed himself, then the value of his art would increase a lot.”

Bamboo Lamp

pimg src=http://www.productdose.com/images/products/draft_5192.gif
alt= //ppThere’s a retro appeal to these Bamboo lamps that make me think of shag carpets and Day-glo colors. The unique pull-cord dangles are just the touch to tip me into flashback mode. Weird. But somehow makes me want to push the buy button. |via a href=http://design-milk.com/bamboo-lamp-by-moooi/Design Milk/a|br //p
