The 7.5 metre-long vessel, named Z-Boat, will feature an asymmetric body made from fibreglass.

Z-Boat by Zaha Hadid

French manufacturers Shoreteam will produce just 12 of the boats and the first is due for release in spring 2013.

See all our stories about Zaha Hadid here, including a car she designed previously for Schachter.

This is the second boat on Dezeen this week, following a speedboat made of wood.

Here’s some information from Schachter’s website Rove and a few technical details from Zaha Hadid Architects:

These are the first pictures of the Z. Boat – an 8m-long motorboat designed by Zaha Hadid for Kenny Schachter.

The limited production vessel is being built by Shoreteam in France and the first seaworthy boat is due for release in spring next year (2013).

Design Statement:

“The asymmetrical design is sculptural in appearance while practically affording more seating accommodations. In a sense, the bespoke boat is as much a work of art as a Cisitalia sports car in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The idea is to think of vessels and vehicles as highly individualistic expressions of art, architecture and design reflecting the edge of what is possible using the most advanced means, including materials, software systems and methods of fabrication.”

Limited edition of 12 boats plus 4 prototypes
LOA: 7.47 m
LW: 6.60 m
WOA: 2.46 m
Material: Fibre Glass (body structure)
Power: 1 x220 HP Mercruiser
Passengers: 8

World Architecture Festival 2012: MAXXI by Zaha Hadid

World Architecture Festival 2012: Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI National Museum of the XXI Century Arts is the focus of our next movie about the World Architecture Festival, as programme director Paul Finch explains why the jury unanimously voted for it to win the festival’s World Building of the Year award in 2010.

The museum was one of the first prominent buildings in Rome to be designed by a female architect and the jury were impressed with how its plan flowed into the existing fabric of the city, as well as the strength of the competition-winning design that required few changes during construction.

MAXXI was also the winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize for the greatest contribution to British architecture in 2010, although its future currently hangs in the balance after its funding was severely cut by the Italian government last month.

This year’s World Architecture Festival will take place in Singapore from 3-5 October and will be the event’s fifth year.

Moleskine publishes new series of monographs exploring the design process of international architects.

Inspiration and process books by Moleskin

Moleskine, the legendary manufacturer of tools for creativity, introduces “Inspiration and Process in Architecture”, a collection of cloth-bound monographs, curated and edited by Francesca Serrazanetti e Matteo Schubert, exploring the design process of architects. The first four books of the series have been released in December 2011 and feature interviews, writings, drawings and notes from four international architects: Zaha HADID, Giancarlo DE CARLO, BOLLES+WILSON, and Alberto KALACH.

Inspiration and process books by Moleskin

“Inspiration and Process in Architecture” is a series of monographs on key figures in modern and contemporary architecture. It offers a reading of the practice of design which emphasizes the value of freehand drawing as part of the creative process. Each volume provides a different perspective, revealing secrets and insights and showing the various observation techniques languages, characters, forms and means of communication.

Inspiration and process books by Moleskin

The “Inspiration and Process in Architecture ” allows an intimate look into the creative process of the architect, and a celebration of the everlasting power of free hand sketching even in the AutoCAD® era. With this series Moleskine introduces a new clothbound format inspired by a classic clothbound style first used by typographer Giambattista Bodoni at the end of the 18th century to protect unbound books. The spine of each book is covered in cloth and front and back cover in raw grey cardboard while maintaining distinctive Moleskine features such as the elastic band, round corners, and inner pocket. Each book is designed to allow a 180 degrees flat opening so the reader can enjoy high- quality images on a warm matt paper.

Inspiration and process books by Moleskin

The “Inspiration and Process in Architecture ” series follows the successful publication of the Moleskine “The Hand of…,” series, currently including “The Hand of the Designer”, “The Hand of the Architect” and “The Hand of the Graphic Designer”. Like its predecessor, the “Inspiration and Process in Architecture ” features beautiful photography and takes a close look at the process of design as practices across the world.

Featured Architects

Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid, the founding partner of Zaha Hadid Architects, was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004. She is an architect who consistently pushes the boundaries of architecture and urban design. Her work experiments with new spatial concepts, intensifying existing urban landscapes in the pursuit of a visionary aesthetic that encompasses all fields of design, ranging from urban-scale works through to products, interiors and furniture.

Best known for her seminal built works such as Vitra Fire Station, Land Formation-One, Bergisel Ski- Jump, Strasbourg Tram Station, the Rosenthal Centre for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, the BMW Central Building in Leipzig, the Hotel Puerta America in Madrid, the Ordrupgaard Museum Extension in Copenhagen, and the Phaeno Science Centre in Wolfsburg, her central concerns involve a simultaneous engagement in practice, teaching and research.

Giancarlo de Carlo

Giancarlo de Carlo (1919-2005) was an Italian architect, planner, writer and educator. He was one of the founding members (along with Alison and Peter Smithson, Aldo van Eyck, and Jacob Bakema, among others) of Team X, a group of architects challenging the modernist doctrines as set out by CIAM and was a key figure in the discourse on participation in architecture. Much of de Carlo’s built work is located in Urbino, where he proposed a master plan between 1958-64, which has slowly been implemented over the past forty years. Combined with his social housing at Terni, the built work has provided a foundation for his views on the involvement of users and inhabitants in the design process. De Carlo’s writings supported this architectural approach; he was editor of the bi-lingual journal, Spazio e Società published beetween1978-2001, An inspiring educator, he also founded the International Laboratory of Architecture and Urbanism (ILAUD). In 1993 he was awarded the Royal Gold Medal. He has received a multitude of international awards, honorary degree and the Italian Republic’s Gold Medal for Culture. His work has been featured in many solo exhibitions (among these: Triennale di Milano, 1995; Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2004; MAXXI, Rome, 2005).

BOLLES+WILSON

In 1980, Julia Bolles-Wilson and Peter Wilson set up their architecture practice, the Wilson Partnership, in London, and in 1987 the renamed BOLLES+WILSON transferred its base once and for all to Munster.

The practice’s main works include: the Suzuki House in Tokyo (the recipient in 1994 of the Gold Medal award from the Institute of Japanese Architects); the Public Library in Munster; the Bridge Watcher’s House and the landscaping of the Kop van Zuid harbour in Rotterdam; the Luxor Theatre in Kop van Zuid; the European Library in Milan; the Bibliotheque Nationale of Luxembourg; and the masterplan for Monteluce, Perugia. The practice is currently working on numerous urban-scale projects in the Netherlands. Peter Wilson has lectured in Tokyo, Barcelona,Venice, Amsterdam and Milan. From 1994 to 1996, he served as a professor at the Kunsthochschule fur Gestaltung in Berlin-Weissensee. Since1998, he has been an External Diploma Examiner at the London Architectural Association and at Cambridge University.

Alberto Kalach

Born in Mexico, in 1960, Alberto Kalach studied architecture there at the Universidad Iberoamericana and at Cornell University, New York. He lives and works in Mexico City, and his concern about the emerging problems of that immense metropolis is reflected very often in his work. Indeed, it is an integral part of everything he has done, from his $5,000 minimal house, through his housing developments, to the largest project ever conceived for Mexico City, called Mexico Ciudad Futura (Return to the City of Lakes), which embraces the city as a geographical whole. His designs have appeared in numerous specialist journals.

Miami Beach Parking Garage by Zaha Hadid

Miami Beach Parking Garage by Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid has become the latest in a string of architects to design a car park for Miami Beach.

Miami Beach Parking Garage by Zaha Hadid

The car park was commissioned following the popularity of other completed Miami garages by architects including Frank Gehry, Enrique Norton and Herzog & de Meuron, whose concrete and glass structure was featured on Dezeen last year.

The spiralling structure will be located in the Collins Park area in the northeast of South Beach.

Anyone interested in car park design can see a few more here.

Here’s some more text from the City of Miami Beach:

Legendary Architect Zaha Hadid Chosen to Design Miami Beach Parking Garage at Collins Park

Architect Zaha Hadid has been chosen by the City of Miami Beach to design its newest parking garage at Collins Park, a neighborhood that’s home to the Miami City Ballet, the Bass Museum, the City Library as well as the Gansevoort, W and Setai luxury hotels. Collins Park is also just blocks away from the Miami Beach Convention Center, the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center and the popular automobile-free Lincoln Road Mall.

Consistently sought-after, Zaha Hadid is the architect of the Aquatic Center for the 2012 London Olympics and the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center. Hadid is the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize – the profession’s highest honor – joins the growing list of world renowned architects who have designed and overseen construction of new parking garages in the City of Miami Beach.

“This is a great opportunity for the City of Miami Beach to expand its commitment to leading edge architectural design,”says Matti Bower, Mayor of the City of Miami Beach.“Even our parking garages are more than a group of parking spaces. Some have become destinations within themselves and have attained individual iconic status. Every building can be a work of art. We are pleased to work with Ms. Hadid and we are delighted with her contemporary and brilliant design for our newest parking garage.”

Miami Beach’s parking garages have received world-wide media attention and have become tourist attractions themselves. They include the Frank-Gehry designed, city-owned, Pennyslvania Avenue Garage; Herzog de Meuron’s minimalist, edgy space at 1111 Lincoln Road; Arquitectonica’s Ballet Valet Garage at 7th Street and Collins Avenue as well as their newest design in Sunset Harbour, which is currently under construction; Enrique Norton’s newly designed parking garage at 16th Street and Drexel Avenue; and Perkins and Will’s recent City Center Garage Project at 18th Street and Meridian Avenue. Hadid’s new design is expected to continue to raise the bar for garages worldwide. The City of Miami Beach is currently working with Ms. Hadid to determine commencement dates for the new garage’s design plans and construction.

Here’s some text from the architects:

Sheikh Zayed Bridge

The UAE has a highly mobile society that requires a new route around the Gulf south shore, connecting the three Emirates together. In 1967 a steel arch bridge was built to connect the fledgling city of Abu Dhabi island to the mainland, followed by a second bridge built in the seventies, connecting downstream at the south side of Abu Dhabi Island. The location of the new (third) Gateway Crossing, close to the first bridge, is critical in the develop- ment and completion of the highway system. Conceived in an open setting, the bridge has the prospect of becoming a destination in itself and potential catalyst in the future urban growth of Abu Dhabi.

A collection, or strands of structures, gathered on one shore, are lifted and ‘propelled’ over the length of the channel. A sinusoidal waveform provides the structural silhouette shape across the channel.
The mainland is the launch pad for the bridge structure emerging from the ground and approach road. The Road decks are cantilevered on each side of the spine structure. Steel arches rise and spring from mass concrete piers asymmetrically, in length, between the road decks to mark the mainland and the navigation channels. The spine splits and splays from one shore along the central void position, diverging under the road decks to the outside of the roadways at the other end of the bridge.

The main bridge arch structure rises to a height of 60 m above water level with the road crowning to a height of 20 metres above mean water level.

Zaha Hadid, two times winner of the Stirling Prize, celebrates the launch of her third London project, the Roca London Gallery

The Roca London Gallery consists of a single floor measuring 1,100m2, where, as the Zaha Hadid studio intended, it appears that water has sculptured and defined each and every detail of the space.

Roca‟s commitment to design and innovation is clearly visible in the exterior of the building with its distinctive and unique façade which gives the Roca London Gallery its identity. Three almost organic portals which appear to have been shaped by water erosion open up this space to the city.

The movement of water is the overriding theme in the Roca London Gallery – flowing and merging exterior and interior spaces. The interior is sculptured white concrete and its state of the art lighting connects each of the different areas whilst serving as a central axis around which the Roca London Gallery revolves.

The interior is fabulous, functional and flexible, featuring cutting-edge, modern, audiovisual, sound and lighting equipment. This technology provides interaction with the brand and the opportunity to discover the company‟s history, its landmark achievements and the values on which all of Roca‟s work is based: the commitment to sustainability and particularly to innovation, design, wellness and saving water.

The Roca London Gallery is intended to be much more than just a display space. Available to an extensive audience that will include everyone from design-savvy architects to design-hungry students, it will become a London hub hosting a wide range of activities such as exhibitions produced in-house or externally, meetings, presentations, seminars and debates, the criteria being a celebration of design in keeping with the Roca brand and company values.
