Rock vinyl anywhere with this player in the shape of mini VW bus

Officially licensed by Volkswagen, the clever little Soundwagon record player has finally been released worldwide, and we had the chance to see it ourselves at the recent CES. Originally only available in Japan this mini, hyper-portable record player is sure to grab some attention.

Modeled after VW’s classic bus, the record player delivers ’70s nostalgia right to your living room, or anywhere that needs highly-detailed, cute grooviness. With a built-in needle powered by a nine volt battery, all you need to do is drop the wagon on a record and let it ride. The producer, STOKYO, promises the new model’s enhanced built-in speaker will deliver higher quality sound than in previous or knock-off versions. Check out the wagon in action in the video below.

The Soundwagon currently comes in cherry red, royal blue, black or white for the global market, runs ¥7,980 (about $96 currently) and sells from STOKYO’s online store directly for a wider color variety.

Bodega Vinyl Wall Art

Flout diplomacy with Dicks of the World decals
dicksoftheworld.jpg

Bodega collaborated with a number of artists to bring a little street art to your living room wall. With vinyl as their medium, artists Cody Hudson, Barry McGee, Hisham Bharoocha, Steve Harrington and Michael Leon made prints that make an affordable way to add something special to your wall. The collection is eco-friendly, temporary and made for indoors.

One notably provocative print, Michael Leon’s “Dicks of the World” depicts said appendage in various sizes with the markings of flags from various countries of the world—but he doesn’t discriminate. Fun and unpretentious, the theme will surely liven up any room. You can choose your wang by country and Bodega will provide you with the tools needed to paste it to the wall.

The vinyl quality is at gallery standards, making your home a backdrop to a collection of art unparalleled to your neighbors. The art is meant to last up to five years, by then maybe you will have been inspired to try a new country. Pick up the series online at Third Drawer Down.

Handbags by Simon Trudeau

I just came back from a quick lunchtime walk through the TO Outdoor Art Exhibition. It’s amazing to see a wide variety of artists/designers – along with their work in an outdoor venue. There was a lot of predictable work, but also some rare innovative pieces that really struck me – such as these handbags by Simon Trudeau. Simon has a a background in Visual Arts and Industrial Design. His website is currently under construction, however you can learn more about his work here.

Come a long way, kinda

Check out this “record player” iPhone app. The author, Theodore Watson, threw it together in one morning. I really like projects that get the point across quickly. It’s a build-to-think mode and sparks dialogue (like this blog post) that gets people thinking about how to use what’s around them.
