Cool Hunting Rough Cut: Professional Bull Riders

Our latest video takes a look at the lesser known athletes in bull riding

It’s not every day that the rodeo comes to New York City, and we were recently invited to get a peak behind the curtain at the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event at Madison Square Garden. We talked with Jacke Carnefix, Senior Manager of Public Relations for the PBR, and got some insight into the life and times of the lesser-known participants—the bulls. While most attention goes to their human counterparts, the bulls that take the stage in high-level riding competitions are highly esteemed athletes in their own right, bred and trained specifically to be expert buckers. In this video, you can check out some intense rodeo action, and, if you have ever seen MSG on a regular night, you may be shocked by its transformation to a rodeo ring. The build-out morphed the infamous home of the New York Knicks into a massive dirt-covered pen, offering a pleasantly disorienting experience for locals.

Nikon D4

Over four years in the making, the new flagship DSLR promises to deliver

Nikon_D4_front.jpg

Just announced, the Nikon D4 is an update to the brand’s flagship DSLR, over four years in the making. Boasting a 16.2MP full-frame sensor capable of low-light capture at ISO levels as high as 204,800 as well as high speed shooting of up to 11 frames-per-second, this professional camera promises the versatility to cover everything from action-packed sporting events to candle-lit moments. While those improvements might be incremental, perhaps the biggest leap forward is the new metering sensor with is 100-times more sensitive than its predecessor. This greater level of detail detection offers features beyond simple light metering—face detection for up to 16 people, subject tracking in still and video mode and dynamic white balance adjustment are just a few benefits.

Offering Canon serious competition, the D4 has several new features making it a video powerhouse. Full HD recording at 60, 30 and 24 frames-per-second, clip recording times up to 20 minutes and professional audio in and out bring DSLR recording features closer to what should be baseline. To increase creative control, the shutter speed, aperture and ISO can be manually adjusted while recording. Though most shooters will still prefer to focus by hand, there are four modes of auto focus available during video recording—normal, wide area, face detection and subject tracking.

As a Nikon shooter since I was 8 years old, I can’t wait to check out the D4 in person at CES next week. In the meantime, DPReview has already posted an initial hands-on. The Nikon D4 will retail for $6000 beginning in late February 2012.

Best of CH 2011: Five Cool Hunting Videos

A Brooklyn-based radio trio, the master of animatronics, precision art work, the history of Danish tattoos and a talk with a French fashion design icon make up our top video picks for 2011

All week we’ll be looking back on the past year of CH to resurface our favorite stories and moments. For starters, it was a great year of Cool Hunting Videos—we made some new friends in our native New York and around the globe—trekking long and far to produce our mini-documentaries about creativity, innovation and process. Below are our top five favorites from 2011:

Chances with Wolves

Master music selectors Chances with Wolves gave us a look behind the scenes of their successful East Village Radio show. We spent some time with the dynamic trio—who are childhood friends—and learned about their methods and inspiration.

Lou Nasti

The godfather of Christmas, Lou Nasti is hands down the most intriguing character we met all year. We had a chance to check out his Brooklyn warehouse where he creates all kinds of magical animatronic installations for clients around the globe.

Jean Touitou

When talking to the iconic French fashion designer and founder of APC you never know what to expect. We had the unique opportunity to sit down with Jean Touitou in NYC and got some insight into his take on clothing, business and religion.

Danish Tattooing

On a trip to Copenhagen we were welcomed into the city’s most famous tattoo parlor to get educated on the history and progression of the artform. Jon Nordstrøn, author of the book Danish Tattooing, broke down the long evolution of tattooing from its nautical roots to the more complex modern iterations.

Kim Rugg

We spent the afternoon with Kim Rugg in her London home and studio talking about her work re-imagining newspapers, comics, stamps and cereal boxes using their existing form while rearranging their content. The amount of precision and time her pieces take is truly mind-blowing.
