Roulade Sofa by KiBiSi for Versus

Danish design studio KiBiSi have created a sofa that looks like a rolled-up mattress for furniture company Versus.

Roulade appears to be curled up but is actually made from a fixed piece of high-density foam with oversized buttons referencing classic Chesterfield leather sofas.

“The idea was to make a roll-up and unfoldable bed,” designer Lars Larsen told Dezeen, but when that proved impossible due to cost constraints they still chose to keep the “jelly roll” shape, as it “gave us a great expression.”

Roulade is designed to complement KiBiSi’s Brick sofa of stacked cushions, also for Versus. Other projects by KiBiSi we’ve featured on Dezeen include a pair of snow-proof headphones and a colourful bicycle with a baggage rack.

Here’s some more information from the designers:

In collaboration with Versus, KiBiSi launches the Roulade as friend and family to the Iconic Brick Sofa.
Roulade is a meeting between generations and genres, a meeting between mattress and Chesterfield, chair and couch. Roulade is a Swiss Roll turned sofa – a contemporary, iconic and humorous character with a cosy and comfortable expression.

Roulade is made from High Density foam cut into a fixed shape reminiscent of a rolled up mattress. It is upholstered with top class materials such as Kvadrat fabrics, and the comfort and durability is outstanding. It is a sort of newcomer – a plump 1,5 pax sofa designed for laid back hanging out. Bespoke, oversized buttons modernise the old school Chesterfield expression.

Scallop table by Samuel Wilkinson for Versus

Scallop table by Samuel Wilkinson for Versus

London-based designer Samuel Wilkinson has designed a series of low tables for Danish design brand Versus with depressions in the top to stop small items rolling around.

The name Scallop is derived from the table’s curves edges and the dish was inspired by his observations of how people tend to cluster items on a table to give a sense of organisation.

“The uniquely v-shaped tubular legs give balance and lightness while still complementing the soft-edged plateau top,” says Wilkinson.

Here are some more details from KiBiSi:

KiBiSi launches Brick – a couch series for the new Danish design brand, VERSUS

KiBiSi has designed the Brick series for Versus. The series consists of a pouf, a chair, a two and three seater. KiBiSi set out to make a sofa with strong architectural references since KiBiSi partner Bjarke Ingels couldn’t really find the right architect’s sofa for his apartment. The point of departure was a classic brick bond forming the cushion pattern. The cushions are tied together and fixed with a tailor quality button. The button, also designed by KiBiSi, is molded of fiber concrete – Yet another architectural reference.

Bjarke Ingels of KiBiSi says: “What is a sofa but a pile of pillows for maximum comfort? Turning the habitual modularity of sofa design into a virtue, the Brick explores the tectonic of bricklaying to stack sandbag like cushions into architecture for comfort.”
