Green USB power pack from the wall

It’s time for another new angle on the USB power-packing accessory universe, this time with one that stays in the wall socket and conserves energy. You plug this little nubbin in to the power socket, wait for it to pop up like a turkey, and grab some power. This accessory stops taking power from the socket once it’s charged up, allowing that power then to filter through its two USB ports to your smart devices.

Other than the power collecting abilities, this device isn’t all that unique. With the pop-out action, this device becomes indispensable. I’d certainly like to have a handful of these for heading out to a tech convention or even sitting around the apartment – wouldn’t you?

Don’t Mess With the Zaryadkus

You can expect nothing but the best functional design solutions from the house of Art Lebedev Studio. The Zaryadkus is a fine example of how trendy USB sockets should be. A hinged plate allows you to place the iPhone (or any other USB enabled device) for charging in close proximity to the socket. Crafted from white plastic, but with options to customize it according to your room color scheme, the Zaryadku is the way USB sockets are meant to be!

E-Post-it!

The MEMOME is a USB stick with an e-ink display that automatically updates as to what files the stick holds. Almost like a digital post-it, the drive is designed to fit your style and keep you in the loop with regards to file and memory information. Love the thoughtful curve on one side, which makes it easy to pick up and grab the stick in a jiffy.

MEMOME is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

The Mu

Award-winning USB adapter reduces size of bulky British power plug design by 70%

The-mu-closed.jpg The-mu-open.jpg

Designed in 1947, the British plug firmly holds its place as one of the world’s largest three-pin power interfaces, escaping the grips of design innovation with the equally clunky editions continuously rolled out. Now, however, product designer and illustrator Min-Kyu Choi of Made in Mind has created The Mu—a folding USB adapter with a minimal, refined design that reduces overall object size by more than 70%.

The-mu-box.jpg The-mu-usb.jpg

The streamlining is achieved with a rotating central pin that allows the adapter to fold flat for travel and storage. This clever, space-saving innovation earned The Mu the title of Product Design of the Year and Overall Design of the Year from the 2010 Brit Insurance Design Awards. Even the packaging on the sleek, white Mu is slender and attractive.

Much anticipated, The Mu launches today, 17 February, for £25.

Phoenix Down

Brooklyn hip hop trio release their latest album on a pixelated feather
phoenix-down1.jpg

Besides eliminating clutter, one of our favorite upshots of the post-CD era is the micro-movement of creative USB stick design. We’ve seen Doc Martens, surfboards and Red Stripe bottles among other adorable forms for the little devices, so it’s somewhat surprising that more bands haven’t paired sound and vision like Junk Science and Scott Thorough recently did by releasing their new album Phoenix Down on a mini-hard drive.

phoenix-down2.jpg

Loaded with the tracks, as well as instrumentals, a cappella versions and a bonus folder of remixes and more, the limited-edition flash drive is a soft-rubber pixelated feather—a fitting mix of nature and digital for their 8-bit-heavy sound and lyrics like “the future’s pixelated.” Preview songs You Could Have That (feat. Homeboy Sandman), Pixelated and Steel Will (feat. Cavalier) (Pre Remix) to get a sense of the offerings.

Pre-order Phoenix Down from Modern Shark, and if you’re in NYC on 27 May 2011, catch them live at Mercury Lounge.
