Type Tuesday: Volume One

I’m sure that these images have been making the rounds, with good reason! Matt Owens of Volume One has posted them in their portfolio. Click here to listen to some songwriting and see the resulting animation that it inspired.

Type Tuesday: Linda Vemane

Linda Vemane recently contacted us with links to your portfolio. We welcome you to do the same (just click here). We’re always looking for collaborators for the magazine and interesting things to post here on the journal.

In the project immediately above, Linda observed letterforms in the architecture of a small town in the UK. “Some were very obvious but some were locked into architecture, the texture of houses and pavement. After finding all letters i photocopied them and gave that scratchy effect by applying white acrylic. It was fun to do because i had to look deeper and i noticed a lot of details i would have passed by on an everyday basis.”

Battlefield Helvetica

Here’s a rather spectacular motion graphics piece that is constructed entirely out of words set in Helvetica. Fontfeed says: “Optix Kreation created a world entirely made up of words in Helvetica caps. The video looks and feels like a first-person shooter war game, with excellent POV camera work and sound design.”

Type Tuesday: Päivälehti Museo, Helsinki

We didn’t go to many museums on our Scandinavian adventure (Glen and I prefer to wander the streets rather than museum halls), but when we were exploring Helsinki’s design district, we found the Päivälehti Museo—a museum of journalism and printing techniques with a focus on Helsingin Sannomat, Finland’s largest newspaper. The museum had excellent displays, but the best part was the printing cellar which had a step-by-step presentation of newspaper production from typesetting and pasteup to printing. Judging by the number of photographs I took, I’d say it was one of the highlights of Helsinki.

Steve Lambert’s show “Everything You Want – Right Now!” at Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. This walk through includes some of the work from the show, which runs from April 25 through June 6th, 2009. “All these signs were constructed by myself with help from Dane Johnson, Hana Newman, Mary Jeys, Jason Jones, and Liz Filardi with the support of http://Eyebeam.org and Charlie James Gallery.” {thanks, Eva}

Seeing spots: Salt Pepper

These little salt and paper packets were the only good thing about the in-flight meal on the way home from Stockholm. Very UPPERCASE.

Type Tuesday: Sweets

Just like plants, pastries always look just a bit more tantalizing in close proximity of nice labels.

Type Tuesday: Rosendals Trädgård

Rosendals was my favourite place in Stockholm. I’ll post this as a “Type Tuesday” for the handwritten labels and notes accompanying their selection of plants: so much nicer than the generic plastic labels we’re used to seeing here.
