Video: Incredibly efficient efficiency

Last year, we wrote about Architect Gary Chang’s amazing 344 square-foot apartment with sliding walls. We recently discovered that Chang let video crews into his Hong Kong apartment, and now we can see his design in action:

Chang’s tiny apartment is proof that small-space living doesn’t prevent someone from living large. If you can’t see the embedded video, check it out on YouTube.

Less stuff: The death of the floppy, iPads replacing paper

pBig difference between family and business: Parents should never outlive their children, but corporations routinely outlive their product offspring. A HREF=”http://www.examiner.com/x-16352-Japan-Headlines-Examiner~y2010m4d24-Sony-to-discontinue-35-inch-floppy-disk-in-Japan” Sony has just announced/A the 3.5 inch floppy disk they pioneered is going the way of all things, and their factories will stop cranking the little obsolete squares out./p

pAs A HREF=”http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/04/sony-announces-the-death-of-the-floppy-disk/” IWired/I points out/A, it’s not at all surprising that floppies are going away, it’s amazing that it’s taken this long for them to die. It’s been over a decade since Apple stopped supporting them, and other PC makers followed suit shortly thereafter; yet Japan has somehow seen floppy sales of 12 million in 2009. As for me, I can’t remember the last time I touched one that hadn’t been turned into some ironic craft project./p

pSimilarly I’ve got a stack of blank CDs and DVDs sitting in a drawer that I used to use to burn files for clients and friends, but with the ubiquity of flash drives they’ve remained untouched. I’ve also got three Netflix discs I’ve had for a few months as I mostly watch their On-Demand service. Physical media really is going away./p

pIn a bid to shed paper, I purchased an iPad so I could read the magazines I have a subscription to in bed, and stop receiving the print versions that tend to stack up on my desk. So far the electronic magazine-reading experience does not quite compare, I’ll have an entry up on it shortly./p

pOver the weekend I came upon A HREF=”http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/24/tonight-on-fox31-georgia-tv-station-buys-ipads-for-news-anchors/” this surprising piece of news/A: WFXL, a Fox network affiliate station in Georgia, is buying iPads for its news anchors–not as job perks, but simply to save paper! Apparently printing out their daily news scripts produces a mountain of expensive dead tree pulp each year. They estimate that the six iPads they’re buying will pay for themselves in four months, saving the station some $9,600 per year by converting all of the scripts to PDFs./p

pAs for the floppy disks, I guess we can expect to see a lot of Japanese-influenced craft projects starting next year, when Sony factories will produce their final production runs. br /

LIDF graphics by Up Creatives

The fourth London International Documentary Festival opened on Friday. Design studio Up created the accompanying catalogue and campaign graphics…

According to Up, the theme for the project is “a conversation in film” and so the campaign uses quotes from various films showing at the festival to reflect the notion of dialogue. The point being that the LIDF not only screens films, but encourages open discussion forums and workshops with directors and filmmakers.

The typographic design uses a split device echoing the idea of text in motion. To generate initial interest in the festival, the more abstract and deconstructed posters were put up around the city, followed by the more legible versions (also rolled out over a series of postcards). An animated ident was also created (see below).

Spanning 16 days, the LIDF is now the UK’s largest documentary festival and showcases over 130 works. It’s on now and runs until 8 May.

Films are set to be shown at a host of locations in the capital including The Barbican, Tate Modern, The British Museum, Rich Mix and The Rio.

Five things that are bound to clutter up your day

  1. Oversleeping. Waking up just 10 minutes late has the ability to throw your entire day off schedule. Use a timer for a week and determine how long it actually takes you to get ready in the morning, commute to your office, and start working on valuable action items. Are you waking up early enough to get everything done?
  2. Getting involved in office gossip and/or office politics. I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably say it again — these negative behaviors are pure clutter.
  3. Tossing junk mail somewhere other than the trash or into a shredder. Don’t let junk mail accumulate on your dining table, desk, or anywhere else it doesn’t belong. Immediately process your mail the first time you touch it.
  4. Losing your charge. How many times have you been on a cell phone call when your phone has died? How many times have you needed a flashlight during a blackout, only to find one that is out of batteries? Create a charging station for all of your portable electronic devices that is in a place you will use it. When doing spring and fall cleaning chores, include battery tests for all items you might need in an emergency. (Go ahead and check the charge on your fire extinguisher, too.)
  5. Throwing your dirty clothes on the floor. Get ready for bed before you are tired so you have enough energy to put your clothes in the hamper or put them up on a hanger. If you throw your clothes on the floor, you’re just creating more work for yourself in the future and a possible hazard in case you need to get up in the middle of the night.

What stumbling blocks have you found that are guaranteed to clutter up your day? Add to the comments any problems you’ve encountered and the solutions you’ve discovered.
