VW’s car-ready folding bike concept

pCheck out A HREF=”http://green.autoblog.com/2010/04/28/volkswagen-bik-e-replaces-spare-tire-with-electric-mobility-devi/” VW’s new electric bike concept/A, designed to fold into a circle that fits in the compartment previously occupied by the spare tire. (Fast-forward to 0:30 to see the bike, and 1:00 to see it folding up.) /p

pWith a range of 12.5 miles, the pedal-less bike is not meant to be a long-hauler, but it would make a neat accessory if you were touring, say, European cities; you could drive to one, ditch the car and buzz around on a bike to see the sights. And it’s designed to be charged up by the car itself, meaning you don’t have to find a wall to plug it into. /p

pThe bike was debute at the Auto China 2010 show, but no firm plans have been announced regarding actual production./p

Retro-tech phone receivers and an interesting film process

pEven with all of the new stuff we have to play around with, a subset of people will get bored with it and start mining the past for old stuff to combine with the new. Which is why we have the “new” Camaro, an IA-Team movie/I starring Liam Neeson, and the items you see below. /p

pMaking the blog rounds is this A HREF=”http://www.etsy.com/listing/44692496/iretrofone-base” iRetrofone Base/A that pipes your cell phone through an old-school receiver. You can even buy a “dialer” app to turn the screen into a rotary dial. The charging solution is a little inelegant, but that’s because it was designed to be used with different cell phones, not just Apple’s./p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/04/0retrotech01.jpg” width=”468″ height=”257″ alt=”0retrotech01.jpg”//div

pA step less sophisticated is the A HREF=”http://www.boingboing.net/2010/04/13/ipad-skype-retro-han.html” Moshi Moshi 01H Handset/A, which plugs into your iPad or what have you. It doesn’t make sense for on-the-go chatting, but it’s a good solution for those who Skype at their desks and crave the feel of the analogue receiver./p

pBut this week’s winner for combining an old tech with new doesn’t have to do with phones, but with film, as A HREF=”http://laptopogram.tumblr.com/” presented by shooter Aditya Mandayam/A: /p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/04/0retrotech03.jpg” width=”468″ height=”601″ alt=”0retrotech03.jpg”//div

blockquoteLaptopograms are images made by pressing photosensitive paper onto a laptop screen and flashing an image in a manner not unlike contact printing or photograms.

p’Laptopogram’ is a misnomer – I reckon they can be made with pretty much any monitor. Perhaps ‘Luminous Screen Emulsion Transfers’ is a better. Here, however, the negative is a digital image – and is flashed for a little time onto the paper before developing the image in a darkroom./blockquotebr /

Pick Me Up: Nobrow

In the second installment of our batch of short films made whilst perusing the wares and exhibits of the Pick Me Up graphic art fair currently running at Somerset House, we caught up with Alex Spiro and Sam Arthur, founders of Nobrow

Spiro and Arthur haven’t just been busy getting the show ready, the pair have somehow managed to publish a slew of new books and publications since CR last spoke to them just a few months ago… Before you watch the next film, you might want to tweak the volume on your computer as this sound on this next film is a little louder than on the last!

Here’s a closer look at the books Al showcases in the above film:

The latest issue of Nobrow’s regularly published illustration magazine, Nobrow 3 (cover, shown above is by ATAK) features work by a host of illustrators and artsists including…

John Sibbick

Luke Pearson

Mike Bertino

The first 3000 copies of each Nobrow is numbered on the back cover, as above

Rise & Fall is a concertina folded “book” that showcases artist Micah Lidberg’s illustrated depiction of the rise and fall of the dinosaurs on one side and then the rise of the mammals on the other. Above is a shot of a copy of it displayed in the Nobrow section of Pick Me Up. Below is a detail and below that is a shot of how the book is packaged.

Birchfield Close by Jon McNaught. Hardback cover shown above, a selection of spreads shown below

Dog Crime by Blex Bolex. Cover above, some spreads below

Jeff Job Hunter by Jack Teagle – the latest in Nobrow’s 17×23 short graphic story series. It tells the tale of Jeff who goes to the Job Centre to claim his job-seekers allowance but ends up slicing up serpents and skeletons in a dungeon…

These are the latest two tomes to be hand screenprinted in Nobrow’s basement screenprinting studio. The one on the left is Hand by Luke Best, the one on the right is Short Cuts by Orlando. Here’s a spread from each:

Catalan De Ocon Francesco Faccin: Pieletrico

A lamp is connected to an energy source, therefore it can also be a source of energy to feed other electrical components.Pielettrico is a hibrid object, being both a source of light and a source of light. It combines two useful functions both for the home or office. It is a source of light, an electrical ´totem´ .The lamp´s base has 3 takes and a switch. It´s body of light is changeable in order to adapt to different requirements of the market. The base proportions are those of the diameter of a round standard Shucho take. It´s 4 horizontal legs meet in the centre where another take allows the body of the lamp to be conennected. The neon version presented at the SaloneSatellite 2010 is the starting point to develop a whole new series of lamps containing the main carachteristics of the Pielettrico.

Buffalo, NY Validates Its Architecture via Jersey Boys Cast

1120buffnytimes.jpg

Based on our handful of posts over the years, we think it’s fairly well-established that Buffalo, New York has a slight chip on its shoulder about being taken architecturally serious. Personally, we think it’s a fine and wonderful city, filled with lots of great buildings and history (like being the home of Louise Bethune). But we think things might be getting a bit out of hand when the Buffalo News runs the story “Jersey Boys: Buffalo’s Architecture ‘Like No Where Else.’” That’s right, the local paper went to talk to the touring cast of the musical Jersey Boys to make sure they gave their seal of approval to the city’s architecture:

“The architecture in Buffalo, it’s like no where else we’ve been,” said Joseph Leo Bwarie, who plays Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys. “It’s amazing here.”

If we happen to run across another article a few month from now featuring the cast of Wicked, we’re going to quit standing up for you, Buffalo.

Bag Of The Week: Deux Lux Fortune Hobo

imageI’ve spotted plenty of Deux Lux’s items over at Urban Outfitters, so I was pleased to see one of their more high-end (but still totally affordable) bags over at the Nordstrom purse department, one of my favorite places to lurk! When it comes to the Fortune Hobo, I’m totally digging the “Moonshine” metal mesh detail which looks almost holographic when the light hits it — it gives the otherwise simple bag a more futuristic, space-y vibe without making it look completely wacky or tacky. Plus, its practical shape and neutral navy faux-leather makes it appropriate for day or night, even with the added glitz. I just love slouchy bags that are big and roomy yet somehow still fit perfectly under your arm and at your side — it’s perfect for tossing in all your must-haves last-minute when you’re racing out of the house, as long as you’re willing to spend the extra minutes to fish out your lip gloss from its bottomless pit later!

What: the Deux Lux Fortune Hobo
Price: $158
Where to Buy: Nordstrom
Who: xgalexy was the first to add the Deux Lux Fortune Hobo to the Hive.

Tamra Davis: Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child

Art’s Immortal Rock Star
The Intimate Documentary “Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child”

Forever remembered as one of the art world’s brightest—and fastest burning—stars, Jean-Michel Basquiat began his meteoric rise to fame in the late 70s, when he ran away from home to live on the streets of New York. Branding himself as a graffiti artist under the mysterious moniker “SAMO©” (a portmanteau of “Same Old”), he soon attracted the city’s counter-cultural royalty, collecting friends such as Debbie Harry, Keith Haring, Glenn O’Brien and Andy Warhol, before turning to painting and storming galleries in New York and Los Angeles with his brightly hued, neo-expressionist works. Basquiat produced thousands of artworks in his short life, dashing off his poetry-infused canvases at a hair-raising pace, but footage of the artist himself has been hard to come by since his death in 1988. Director Tamra Davis, who met and befriended Basquiat when he visited LA to exhibit at the Gagosian gallery in 1983, was one of few to document the artist during his lifetime. Profoundly affected by his death, Davis hid her reels for two decades. But in 2005, prompted by a friend working on MOCA’s Basquiat retrospective of that year, Davis returned to her 80s footage to create a short, 20-minute tribute to the artist. “Everybody at the museum flipped out because the footage I had was incredibly rare,” she says. “They said, ‘This is so important! You can’t just keep it in your closet––you have to show this film.” So Davis developed the short into a feature-length documentary with Arthouse Films, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, seeking out Basquiat’s contemporaries, friends and admirers, from his longtime girlfriend Suzanne Mallouk to artist Julian Schnabel and early hip-hop maestro Fab Five Freddy. The film documents Basquiat’s transformation from slouching street kid into international art world darling,  accompanied by graphic animations by artist Shepard Fairey and a soundtrack from Beastie Boys Adam Horovitz and Mike Diamond and Manhattan-based composer J. Ralph. Today’s clip is an exclusive preview of the film, which in association with NOWNESS, just had its New York premiere at MoMA during the Tribeca Film Festival.
