String shelving systems

City-furniture.be

For a long time now I have a BIG crush on the shelving systems from String! In 1949 Swedish architect Nils Strinning designed this ‘simple’ construction of powder coated steel frames
on which wooden elements hang. It’s timeless, very functional and makes all your books and precious things look more beautiful. {Image above is from City-furniture and below if from Elisabeth Dunker’s home}

Finelittleday

While visiting Singapore last month I finally found a shop that sells the String shelves here in Asia… it’s called Style Nordic on Ann Siang Road, one of the nicest streets in Singapore by the way… of course online there is a lot to find about String shelves…vintage ones and new ones are available throughout the web…

Wanted: Designer Who Knows How to Share

zipzip.jpgWe once spent an entire Thanksgiving attempting to explain Zipcar‘s business model (“And each car has its own name!”) to some more chronologically advanced family members who remain suspicious of car leasing much less vehicle sharing. The booming young company is doing a much better job than we did of conveying the appeal of “wheels when you want them.” Part of that success is attributable to Zipcar’s crack design team, to which the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company is looking to add one innovation-minded interactive designer. Responsibilities include designing and implementing online advertising, video and web campaigns, and rich media applications as well as collaborating with other members of Team Zipcar to execute brand-focused marketing and web-based communications for 13 regional markets.

Design Fancy: Berit Kalmar

pimg alt=”df3_Kate_Kalmar.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/df3_Kate_Kalmar.jpg” width=”468″ height=”372″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” /br /
Berit Kalmar is one of a kind. One of those people that will be part of a shuttle launch on Monday and eating hot dogs with hobos on the tracks on Saturday. This sort of understanding of humanity is what has defined most of her work. She’s Swedishmdash;from a small town called Kalix up in the far north. When she was 16 she wanted to get some experience overseas and moved to Sandusky, Ohio. /p

pMost people laugh when they find out that she moved there to work at Cedar Point, ride the coasters, and train in her own way to be an astronaut. It worked though, that’s the thing. After 6 years of doing that and studying around the world, she got a job at the Trans-Continental Space Authority. One of her first assignments was to decide what object should be shot into space to help aliens understand humans. She was on a team of 50, and after several years of ideating and brainstorming they came up with the “Bear With Saxophone” or BWS. It was one of those compressed sponge creatures inside a gel cap- the same thing that you probably played with as a kid. They sent 10,000 of these capsules into space. At the same time, they sold them in grocery stores so kids and adults alike could have a piece of history. The capsules were a huge seller and helped fund the TCSA’s next two missions./p

pWhile at the TCSA, one of Berit’s main tasks was to use the technology that was being developed in-house for quirky products that normal people could use. Like a lot of people, she thought that the fact that humans called balls of dust “dust bunnies” was great. At the time, the TCSA was working with ink that could hold a static charge. She took this technology and created the dust bunny print-out. It was a piece of paper with the special TCSA ink and a charging stick. These were sold in the mid 1990’s in Western Europe and parts of the Southern US. For a brief period they were also sold in SkyMall./pa href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/design_fancy_berit_kalmar_16500.asp”(more…)/a

Pasta Setaro Spaghetti Limone

pastifico-1.jpg

The spaghetti limone from Italian family-run Pastificio Setaro adds an easy kick of refined flavor to any pasta dish. Spanning three generations, Pastificio Setaro is the lone remaining producer of artisanal pasta out of the 130 that once populated the Naples area of Torre Annunciata.

The Setaro family makes their pasta from semolina (a high-protein durum wheat flour) and mineral-rich water from nearby Mount Vesuvius, pushing the dough through antiquated bronze machines that leave it with a slightly rough composition—the perfect texture for adhering to sauce or olive oil.

A great pasta for warmer months, we recently enjoyed spaghetti limone at CH HQ with a mix of Russian kale, shallots, basil, goat cheese, scallions, chili flakes and additional lemon zest.

Pasta Setaro sells online (and at NYC’s Chelsea Market) from Buonitalia for $6 per pound.

The St. Lawrence Market is one of the great institutions here in Toronto and the municipal government is now into the final stages of a design competition to replace the North Building.

The North Building has been the ugly sister to the grander and more prominent Main Building since it’s most recent replacement in 1968. See more of the designs at Urban Toronto
