Ask Unclutterer: Too much storage

Reader Annette submitted the following to Ask Unclutterer:

My family lives in a modern 4 bedroom house with a 2 car garage, finished basement and shed. We have deep closets, shelving, and storage rooms galore. My husband and I and 3 kids are on a mission to reduce our possessions yet we have so much storage there are little bits here and there. Some cabinets are just plain empty. I’m still left with the feeling of clutter and disorganization since everything is spread out. I’m not sure what I own or where it all is! What would you suggest to consolidate things and keep my belongings under control? Thank you.

Too much storage? Annette, I have to tell you, it’s not often I come across people in your situation. However, too much storage can be a problem, especially since our human tendency is to fill up the space we have. Fighting this natural desire and keeping your family from wanting to fill it up, too, will likely be a struggle as long as you’re in this home.

In the world of Make Believe, you would sell this house and downsize to one that more appropriately meets your family’s needs. However, this is the U.S. in 2010 when the housing market is in the toilet, and not Make Believe. So, just tilt your head back, have a good chuckle, and then continue reading for some more serious advice.

First, when organizing the things you decide to keep, group like items with like items. This may require pulling everything you currently have in storage and sorting it out on your living room floor. Extra batteries should be grouped together, towels together, and so on and so forth.

Once you have items grouped together, return them to the storage place physically closest to the place where they are used. Coffee mugs should be stored next to the coffee maker, toilet paper in bathroom closets, lawn mower in the garage or a shed, and sheets in their appropriate bedroom closet.

Within the specific storage space, put those things you access most often on shelves between your knees and shoulders. Items you access less often can go on shelves below your knees and above your shoulders. Obviously, put heavier items on those lower shelves and lighter items on the highest shelves.

Only use your attic and basement storage space for things you access just once a year or less — holiday decorations, for instance. Make an inventory of what you have stored in these areas and post it on the back of the door or next to the light switch in these areas. Since you shouldn’t be storing much of anything in these spaces, these inventories won’t take you long to create.

By storing things in your home closest to where you use them the most often, you shouldn’t have much difficulty finding things when you need them. You can always create inventories for closets that store regular items if you want. And, since you have kids, you might want to label the lips of shelves so little helpers can learn where things are stored.

Thank you, Annette, for submitting your question for our Ask Unclutterer column. Good luck organizing your storage spaces!

Rub Kandy

Seattle Art Museum Announces Layoffs, Pay Reductions and Two Week Closure

0126seattleart.jpg

It seemed like everything had been coming up pretty rosy for the Seattle Art Museum following the rug being pulled out from under them back in 2008 when the now-defunct Washington Mutual and JP Morgan abandoned their shared new building, leaving them in the lurch for millions at a time when museums across the board were struggling. Either because of that news and/or strong exhibitions, the SAM was suddenly swarmed with visitors, they picked up a new director, Derrick Cartwright, and Nordstrom announced they were stepping in to fill up a healthy portion of their building’s available empty space. But while it seemed things were on the up and up, apparently the museum is still hurting, with heavy debt lingering and a decline from that initial boost of visitor popularity. They’ve just released a statement saying they’ll be cutting 15 staff members, reducing executives’ pay by 10% (Cartwright himself will be taking a larger reduction), and perhaps most alarming, will be closing their doors for two weeks next year, from January 31st to Feburary 13th. Here’s a bit about the news from Cartwright:

“We are taking steps to remedy a tough situation. There is nothing more difficult about my role than saying goodbye to valued colleagues. The decision to reduce staff is especially hard since SAM has a talented workforce. Unfortunately, since personnel expenses represent a significant portion of our expense base, the only way to bring operating costs to sustainable levels is through staff reductions.”

Hot In The Hive: The “Small and Nimble” Kin Communication Device

imageOne, search contacts. Two, find Courtney. Three, alongside her phone number, see her Twitter, Facebook and Myspace updates with the slide of a finger. This awesome little phone is the way to next level social networking- and probably your new best friend. KIN is like an on the go PC that goes one step further in enabling you to update any social network with text, photo, sound and video in a cute, compact, and graphically appealing touchscreen phone. It’s not just your contacts either- view a constant flow of updates from your favorite band via their web site, or even your favorite news sites. It’s like the newsfeed for your everything! Just like any other mobile internet connection, when you’re not getting updates, feel free to surf the web on the phone’s easy, navigable touchscreen. The KIN One is a wee pocket sized phone with a full slide-out keypad, its big brother, KIN Two, has the same slide out keyboard but with a wider screen, more memory, and HD video compatibility. Probably the best part: when you purchase your KIN, you’re given your own online studio on which you’re able to access all your text messages, contacts, videos and images without the actual phone — So, losers like me who are in constant search of where they last left their phone have not only a back-up, but an interactive server of all things that are important to you. Check out social networking’s next of kin by Verizon Wireless, and stay in touch like never before!

Thing vs other thing!

Last night, illustrator Jack Teagle launched his first solo show of work, entitled Dungeons and Desktops, at Nobrow‘s new East London gallery space.

The paintings, prints, drawings and sculptural works reveal Mr Teagle’s love of battling forces: bearded men are pitched against muscle-bound freaks, a cowboy takes on a snake, He-Man vs Skeletor, a boy scout faces death, and children flee from a giant ball of hair… Here are some pics – please excuse the poor quality:

As well as the various artworks on display, visitors to the gallery / shop can also pick up a copy of Teagle’s Jeff Job Hunter comic, published by Nobrow:

Jeff Job Hunter is the latest in Nobrow’s 17×23 short graphic story series. It tells the tale of Jeff who goes to the Job Centre to claim his job-seekers allowance but ends up slicing up serpents and skeletons in a dungeon…

Dungeons and Desktops runs until July 16 at Nobrow’s gallery and shop at 62 Great Eastern Street, London, EC2A 3QR. All enquiries to info@nobrow.net

More Info on Barbra Streisands Design Book

0528babsbook.jpg

Save for that quick post last month when we told you she would be the keynote at this year’s BookExpo, it had been almost a full year since we’d last thought about Barbra Steisand writing a book about architecture and design. But now here it is all over the place (thanks BookExpo), with the first peek at its cover (where Babs looks just slightly more comfortable than her very uneasy dog). The initial info has come out now, so we and you now know that it’ll be 288 pages, cost somewhere south of $60 depending on where you buy it, and has an official release date of November 16th of this year. And while we’d really rather not have to think about it again until then, she does score some points in this quote over at the NY TimesT blog for dropping Mies van der Rohe‘s name:

Gayle King, the editor-at-large of O, the Oprah Magazine, interviewed Streisand but was obviously outmatched by the diva’s aesthetic prowess. “When I think of a Tiffany lamp,” King said, “I think of bright colors.” “No,” replied Streisand, “you’re thinking of fake Tiffany lamps.” Burn! King went on to quote Oprah, who likes to say, “God is in the details.” “Ah,” Streisand chimed in, “But Mies van der Rohe said the devil is in the details.” They’re both right, of course, but Babs had the last word.
