10 Basket Weave Shoes That Are Made For Summer!

imageI know Easter was like, over a month ago, but hear me out! Basket-inspired shoes are totally fashion-forward for the summer months ahead! A looser basket weave boasts chic cut-outs for maximum breathability for the hot weather to come, like these super-high wedges by Sam Edelman, while tighter-woven patterns like in these Cole Haan metallic pumps provide more texture than your typical solid heels. Woven shoes, whether in the form of casual flat sandals or a summer take on edgy peeptoe booties, seem to have a sort of automatic earthy vibe and give an extra dose of effortlessness to a meticulously-planned outfit. There’s a laidback, sort of “homemade” feel about them, in a cool way that you’d never be able to pull off if you actually tried to weave your own sandals! For further inspiration on how to get your weave on this summer, scope out my slideshow for my 10 favorite woven flats, sandals, and booties!

Anywhere—A Travel Guide

Falck1.jpg

From fiction to fanzines, the students showing at the 2010 degree exhibition at Stockholm’s art and design school Konstfack put out many fine examples of self-publishing. Demonstrating that the younger generation still see relevance in tangible media, students like Magda Lipka Falck presented thoughtfully refreshing paper-bound projects.

Falck5.jpg

For the culmination of her masters in Experience Design, Falck decided to examine travel books. “Anywhere—A Travel Guide” represents Falck’s belief that, “There are many different types of travel. Sometimes they carry us right across the globe, sometimes into space and sometimes just around the block. Sometimes there is a journey going on inside us,” she says.

Falck2.jpg Falck3.jpg

Falck’s whimsical take on the form, reads zesty and vibrant. Free of acknowledging any specific place she has “created a travel guide that is situated somewhere in the middle.” Featuring a range of inspiring journey accounts—from diverse travelers to photographs of places, people and experiences—there’s plenty of stimuli to get you up and about.

Falck4.jpg

Yet perhaps the pages of travel tips, the real flesh of this unusual travel guide, which sets it in context. Applicable for all types of travel, Falck doles out creative advice like “Imagine a song you haven’t heard in a long time. Move your body with the music. Turn right when the song ends.” Or, “Ask a stranger which is their favorite street. Go there.”

Falck7.jpg Falck9.jpg

“It’s a travel guide that will hopefully lead you to places you have never seen before—though you may visit them every day. A place you have forgotten, a place you have never searched for or a place that does not exist,” continues Falck. In addition to the book, she made a set of small cards with concise advice for the budding traveler.

Falck, though not settled yet on her future intentions for the project, fast ran out of copies during the exhibition. Entertaining, thought provoking, well produced and visually appealing, we hope to see “Travel—A Guide to Anywhere” on bookshelves soon.

Reminder! Betacup Deadline: June 1st

pimg alt=”betacup-ad-cup.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/betacup-ad-cup.jpg” width=”468″ height=”315″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pOne more thing to do over the holiday weekend: Get your entry into the a href=”http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/landing”Betacup Challenge/a and get in the running for one of two $10,000 prizes./p

pThe Betacup competition was launched a couple months ago to challenge designers to come up with a way to eliminate, or at least seriously reduce, the use of paper coffee cups, which are non-recyclable./p

pWe’ve been posting our a href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/competition/betacup_showcase_going_strong_at_three_weeks__16466.asp”favorites/a over the competition’s long a href=”betacup_showcase_12_days_left__16603″run/a. Now it’s come to a close and we want you to make one last push to a href=”http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/landing”enter/a, if you haven’t already./p

div style=”align: right;”img src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/2010/05/betacup-air2.jpg” width=”468″ height=”294″ alt=”betacup-air2.jpg”//div

pThis close to the deadline, the entries are getting really creative. We were delighted to find a couple that use air, both to different ends. Tallac Design’s a href=”http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/ideas/5025″Bucky Air Cup/a replaces insulating material with air, to cut down on the amound of material needed. On the flipside, designlab’s a href=”http://www.jovoto.com/contests/drink-sustainably/ideas/5269″Air Cup/a, uses inflatability to increase the portability of a resuable cup. Both of their two schemes include a strange, but smart, “drinking flap.” /p

Iron Chef Goes Architectural

iron designer.jpgUntil the networks respond to our pleas for America’s Next Top Architect or a Project Runway-style reality show featuring Rem Koolhaas in the mentoring stead of Tim Gunn, we’ll content ourselves with the inaugural Iron Designer Challenge. The live competition, which will take place on the evening of June 17 in New York City, puts an architectural spin on the campy cooking show sensation, Iron Chef, with “Kitchen Stadium” replaced by the roof deck of the Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction, the design-focused high school that the event will benefit. Teams will have three hours to design and build a life-size emergency shelter out of everyday materials—and a “secret ingredient” (wenge wood? crown molding? jicama?) that will be unveiled at the start of the event. Judges including NYC Department of Design and Construction Commissioner David Burney, Gregg Pasquarelli of ShoP Architects, and Parsons Dean Joel Towers will award the coveted title of Iron Designer. We hear that Team Gensler is in it to win it (aren’t they always?), but they’ll have stiff competition from rival squads representing firms such as Turner Construction, Perkins + Will, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
