Gum Power

Poor Singapore, chewing gum is banned in that country so I suppose they may never get to experience the Chewing Gum Battery Concept! It is a simple and innovative idea where paper battery is kept charged at a solar empowered dispensing station, and can be easily used for gadgets whose battery dies out unexpectedly. I suppose it is intended for tourist places or maybe college campus, but it sure is a neat way to get instant power.

Chewing Gum Battery is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Sound Gardening, Transforming Plants into a Multi-Player Musical Instrument

soundgardening.png

Recently, students from Keio University’s Graduate School of Media Design transformed a garden of greenery into a multi-player musical instruments. Primarily a party game, the Sound Garden is an interesting non-formal interface that connects technology and nature for participants. It is delightful in its seeming simplicity, easily engaging up to 12 people inviting collaboration on an impromptu musical jam session.

The brief was straight-forward: create an entertaining social interaction for participants of TEDxTokyo. As Jack Shaw, project manager and Masters Student at Keio shared, “It was important to meet their need of a social entertainment experience for the breaks between speakers, and to get far away from any notion of a sterile traditional conference environment.”

Using an Adobe Flash demo and a paper mockup with colored circles standing in for living plants, the team built their first ‘dirty’ prototype. If a user touched a color circle, the tester would initiate a looped sound until the same circle was touched again. Two or more users would work together, turning on and off sounds to create a musical composition.

They then began working on a series of prototypes using living plants and Arduino to attach the game’s functions to living plants. Working with programmer Yuki Anai, Shaw explained the innerworkings of Sound Gardening:

Maui Maker with a Passion (Fruit) for Lasers

0lilikoi-laser.jpg

Every Thursday night, inside a converted shipping container on the island of Maui, the Maui Makers meet up to share tools, time, and knowledge with the community for the purpose of making things. Thursday before last, MM member Ryan showed up with a laser…powered by passion fruit!

Lilikoi (aka Passion Fruit, Passiflora Edulis) is a vine that grows all over our wet Maui regions. It can produce LOTS of fruit—which can make a mess for owners, and a bonanza for bugs. Ryan was cleaning up a whole bunch of them at his home and tasting one, realized it was pretty acidic. Being a curious Maker, he thought “Hmmm I wonder if you could make a power source with this?”

Ryan grabbed some anodized bolts (source of zinc), some thin copper pipe, wire, switches, LEDs, capacitor, and built himself a nice demonstration Veggie Battery. And since Ryan loves lasers, he grabbed a small green laser and added it to the board.

At 3 to 3.8 volts, Ryan won’t be using the laser to gun down stormtroopers anytime soon, but it’s still an interesting source of renewable energy. Provided he doesn’t eat them all.

The Evolution of Headphones

VOLVE Headphones merge innovative operation, minimalistic character & high-end technology to blur the boundaries between music and mind. Sure, they’re sleek and stylish, but what sets them apart is the transfer of play/volume functionality directly to the headphone from the MP3 player or other Samsung device. Volume can be adjusted by simply turning a rubber disc situated on the ear cups & play or pause is activated by a single push on the centerpiece, making them as intuitive to use as they are beautiful to look at.

Highly adjustable revolving stainless steel tubing surrounding the ear cups provides a perfect fit for each individual and eliminates any soreness from prolonged use, so you can immerse yourself in your listening experience without being distracted by ear pain.

Flat Pack Mouse

I know the tech companies are doing their best to come out with a mouse that is sleek and compact enough to compliment a laptop. However I am sure most of you will agree with me that a full bodied mouse is what our hands crave, when we work one with a laptop. So to address the issue or portability and keep with the demand of a fully functional mouse, we have here the Flat CD Mouse Concept. When its flat-packed it fits into the CD ROM drive and when you fold it (origami style), it converts into a fully functional mouse. Love it and want it NOW!

The Flat CD Mouse is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

The Queen is Under Pressure!

The Air Tube Earphones are fitted with a pressure sensor in the earbuds. This helps the earphones instinctively understand if the user is still wearing his earphones or has removed them. The logic is that if you have removed the earphones, it means you are no longer listening to your music player….as a result the earphones automatically power-off your music player till you pop in the earbuds once again.

This intuitive action not only saves your player’s power for you, it also makes it easy for you to manage the device incase you have slipped it into you pocket or bag.

Clever!
