Move Over Tablet

Introducing… Wallet! It’s an all-in-one device that functions as phone, camera, and tablet all in one. Incredibly, it’s merely the size of a standard wallet, but features 3 folding screens in a unique construction that allows them to perform multiple tasks at once or even be combined to stream movies or photo slideshows. But HOW?? You’ll have to check out the video after the jump to see just how this incredible multitasking machine works!

The first screen is formed by two sets: a framework that allows the folding of the entire screen, and an inner screen which can perform a rotation of 180 °, which at its rear part includes a 12.1 Mpx camera with 16x digital zoom and video recording at 1080p HD. In addition, a flash light that improves the quality of photos. On one side is a LED that spares the user from having to open Wallet to check if they have received a call, message or any other notifications. Moreover, this screen also includes a microphone and a speaker for calls, so it can be used without opening it. At the top corner of the frame are connectors for standard 3.5mm headphones to avoid burden when it is used as widescreen and next to it is a power button for easy accessibility.

The second screen has a built-in support in the outer casing made of Technogel. Eventhough this material can be easily bendable, it is also strong enough for the support to carry the entire weight of Wallet. The Technogel is an innovative material invented by an Italian company. Among its many properties are resistance to shocks, large durability and high protection. At the top of the screen is a standard micro USB connector type B which serves to connect any peripherals items (mouse, keyboard, printer, and even a TV). Additionally, it can be connected to a computer to recharge. The connecter is located in a spot where it does not interfere when it is used as a tablet or widescreen.

iPhone touchkeys become real

Designer Moon Myounghak has made a lovely effort in a very real way (conceptual on the verge of reality) in creating a case that allows the iPhone to become a touchkey phone. WIth the keys this case creates for the iPhone, you’ve got a very physical set of keys accented by a touchscreen that contains five icons across. In other words, this wouldn’t be allowed by Apple as it stands here, but with a hacked iPhone you’d have gold.

Have a peek at what this physical case with real physical buttons would bring you and your iPhone and let us know – would you do it? Do you desire the physical set of keys of yesteryear to keep the iPhone linked to the past? Or could you never, ever keep away from the full touchscreen experience?

The PhantomX Hexapod Marks a New Era for Robots and Doom for the Rest of Us

phantom-hexapod.jpg

It’s been a while since I wrote a damning piece about robots, because there hasn’t been anything robotic to scare me witless in quite some time.

Well that’s changed now, thanks to the Trossen Robotics Community, a “one stop robot shop” responsible for the unholy monstrosity you see here. No thing on Earth and under Heaven ought move like this; it alternately scuttles with the grotesque urgency of a cockroach and the obscenely suggestive swaying of a strip club pole dancer. And unlike a marauding giant spider, it is the exact same creature when you flip it over, rather than being incapacitated. It is unstoppable and it is an abomination. Look upon it:

To the designer of this PhantomX Hexapod that retails for a fairly reasonable $1,199.95: I do not appreciate, sir, the wicked and sensuous way that the robot moves in the beginning of the video, its frightening ability to accelerate, its freakishly quick ability to rotate in a clearly menacing way, its disturbing rotational symmetry in all axes. I will not be fooled by the presence of children in this video, and when all of humanity toils under the yoke and direction of millions of self-assembled creatures like these, I will say, “I told you so.”

2012 Holiday Gift Giving Guide: Software

It’s amazing how much organizing/productivity software there is. It’s even more incredible that software has become a valid gift option. When I was a kid, getting software for Christmas meant you got a game. Today, there’s an app for just about anything you want to do. Below is a list of can’t-miss apps to keep your family and loved ones organized and productive in the new year, or to add to your wish list:

  1. An Evernote Premium account. Evernote is my external brain. I use it for “cold storage” of reference material. That is, information that doesn’t require action but will be useful in the future. Evernote is great because it automatically syncs your information across almost any device with an Internet connection. It has very powerful search function, tagging, and more that makes it easy to find what you’re searching for in your stuff. The $45 premium account enables larger uploads, offline notebooks, improved upload speeds and collaboration with other users.
  2. Dropbox Pro account. Dropbox is so useful I almost think it should be installed on computers by default. The online storage solution is a fantastic way to backup important documents and share them with others. With Dropbox, you can access your stuff from nearly any Internet-connected computer. The pro account starts at $9.99 per month for 100 GB of online storage. I use it every single day.
  3. This Life pro account. I wrote about This Life earlier this year and I’m still enjoying it. This Life lets you organize and share your photos and videos easily and with a beautiful interface. Uploading photos is easy, as is creating “Stories.” This Life Stories collections of photos that you’d like to group together, like those of a certain person, trip, location, time period or whatever you desire. It’s browser-based so, like the other applications I’ve suggested to far, it doesn’t’ matter if you own a Mac or a Windows machine. There’s also a great app for the iPhone and iPad. The Family Plan lets you upload and share 50,000 photos or 25 hours of HD video (1080p) for $14.99 per month.
  4. Backup software. This is the gift that keeps on saving, not giving. As a Mac user I recommend Dolly Drive. Named for Dolly the cloned sheep (get it?), Dolly Drive uses Apple’s own Time Machine software to save your backup remotely, or “in the cloud.” I’ve been using it for years now and it’s always worked. Local backups are important – like a hard drive in your house or office – but remote backups are even more so. Dolly Drive puts your backup on their own server. That way, a laptop can back up anytime, even when it’s not in your home. Dolly Drive starts at just $3 per month. Windows users should consider Carbonite for similar, remote, automatic backups that start at $59/year. And, Erin swears by Backblaze. Irrespective of the program you choose, backup your computer and make sure your loved one’s computers are backed up, too.
  5. OmniFocus from The Omni Group. Forgive me while I recommend a Mac-only app here. OmniFocus is the big daddy of project management apps on the Mac. It’s so flexible and powerful that I can only touch the surface of its capabilities in this post. It was built with David Allen’s Getting Things Done system in mind, but you needn’t follow that method to use OmniFocus. Easily create projects and their associated tasks. Break them down by category, context or location. Keyboard support is extensive, so you can flip from one function to another easily. My favorite features let you focus on one project at a time, hiding everything else on the screen, while review mode let’s you see what’s outstanding at a glance. OmniFocus is $79.99.
  6. BreakTime and Focus Booster. I work best when I schedule in break times. BreakTime is the app I use for this purpose. It’s a Mac app that sits in your menu bar and counts down timed work sessions and break sessions. I work for 25 minutes and then take a break for five. Then, I repeat the process. It keeps me moving and allows for some time to “goof off,” walk around, etc. If you’re not a Mac user, consider Focus Booster. BreakTime costs $4.99 and Focus Booster is free.

I’ve got one bonus item that isn’t software, but it is a piece of technology:

I’m recommending the Emergent Task Planner notebook. I use one of these every day. It allows you to list the most important tasks you wish to accomplish, estimate how long they’ll take, recored how long they actually take and recored notes/incoming stuff or ideas that pop up while you work. There’s even a small, travel sized edition. I really do use this every day.

Tron-inspired smartphone hits The Grid

Designer Wooseok Suh is coming on correct today with a lovely smartphone device by the name of “Another World”, made right out of the box to present an entirely new environment for you lovers of the unique. This smart device could be called a smartphone or it could simply be called an electronic touch device – it breaks barriers either way.

Have a peek at how this device not only shows off its abilities in such a simple way that we don’t even have to explain how it works, but also keeps a perfectly clean aesthetic for fashionability as well. The movie Tron comes to mind simply because of the black and transparent grid run through with glowing light lines – otherwise this lovely amalgamation of wonder is all from the mind of Suh.

Must-See Video: Finally, an Everyday Use for Optical Camouflage Tech

Keio-OpticalCamoRearview-theview.jpg

As if we haven’t seen enough “Holy Crap!”-worthy stuff from Japan lately, today’s second tip from our forums was too good to pass up: a Keio University research team led by Professor Masahiko Inami have adapted optical camouflage technology to “make the backseat [of a passenger vehicle] look transparent from the driver’s viewpoint.”

The main feature of our system is, it makes things look as if you can really see through them, rather than giving an indirect view of what’s behind. For example, with a system that shows things on a monitor, you can understand your car’s position and where any obstacles are. But the point about our system is, it gives a sense of depth, by making things appear where they actually should be when you look back.

Keio-OpticalCamoRearview-drawing.jpg

That’s right, the verysame technology that’s being developed for a real-life version of sci-fi/fantasy trope of an invisibility cloak or cloaking device—for a rather more mundane interior application: as a sort of full-size rear-view mirror for auto interiors. And if the actual physics of the technology is surprisingly straightforward—”video from the rear cameras is projected onto the backseat using a half-mirror—it’s more than just a glorified augmented reality periscope:

The screen is made of a special material called a recursive reflector. Optically, it has an interesting characteristic because it reflects light back in the direction of incidence. When we thought of applying it to automobiles, the advantage was, it gives a clear image in daylight, rather than in a dark place like this.

Keio-OpticalCamoRearview-camera.jpg

I was especially interested to learn that they’re looking to develop the technology for an entire auto interior, affording a full 360° of reverse-cloaking transparency, a sort of virtual X-Ray vision that will do away with blind spots once and for all. “Currently, the system shows one point clearly. But from now on, we’d like to keep increasing the number of viewpoints. We plan to enable the system to be easily used by anyone.”

Inami and his team optimistically estimate that it’s a mere five years away from commercial availability. But not everyone is so enthusiastic about it: in response to wallflower’s original post, Lmo writes,

Another “safety feature” crutch for people that really shouldn’t be behind the wheel of an automobile. If you think about it, all that is needed is driver awareness. An acronym is taught to commercial vehicle student drivers: G.O.A.L Get Out And Look

Know what’s around you before you get into the vehicle. No optical camo required.

Voice Memo With Benefits

Vmo is quite a clever way of combining Voice Memos with QR Codes and Smartphones. Basically its a way to mark and capture data, be it voice or visual, and then revisit it at a later date. Essentially this means, if you are in class and taking notes, you may also want to record the lecture, so you tab and the recording using a supplied QR Code Sticker (that nestles sweetly in an allocated space in the smaprtphone jacket), scanning the code and readily accessing it later. The video below explains it all.

The designers explain, “The market strategy is to set a range of Vmo sticker prices depending on the file size (i.e. length of voice recording). In a nutshell, we actually sell the web space bit by bit, which store the info or voice on the net. Cloud service plays the main role behind the scene. We view cloud service as a potential market. Focus on realizing users’ dreams and let them “taste” vocal memories wherever they are, whenever they want by means of cloud service connection. Vmo is not merely an amazing product design but a whole new cloud service design strategy.”

USE:

  • Step 1: Write the info on the Vmo.
  • Step 2: Stick Vmo on your stuff.
  • Step 3: Record the voice and scan the code.
