Outdoor Warmer

The Stoneven takes the induction cooking stones concept a step further by adding the versatility angle to it. Basically the pebbles can be used collectively to cook in outdoor camps and be used as body warmers. Yeah, the outdoors are rough and rugged, but when you travel in the woods you need appliances and gadgets that can serve more than one purpose. This aspect not only lightens the load but also increases the spectrum of performance.

Stoneven is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Photographing The Photographer

It is an everyday occurrence that you want to be included in the photograph with your family and friends, but end up being the photographer. The Not One Less is a concept that allows you to be in the picture. It has a dual lens, one that focuses on the main subjects and the other on the photographer. Superb idea, I hope Nikon or Canon is listening.

Not one less is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Earthquake Art

The Quakescape 3D Fabricator was created in response to the Christchurch earthquakes by Kiwi designer James Boock. The device takes earthquake data and transfers it into art by using a scaled down landscape of Christchurch as a “blank canvas” and extrudes paint onto the exact location of the earthquake tremors – transforming the data into functional art. Check the vid after the jump to see it in action!

The device works by taking earthquake data from the site Geo-net (www.geonet.com) and transfers it into the medium of art by using paint and Arduino technology. The surface that the paint is applied to is a CNC-routed landscape of Christchurch, New Zealand. This acts as the blank canvas and allows the paint to move around the landscape creating an amazingly vibrant visual. Each color represent the various magnitudes of the tremors and is run on two horizontal axis by stepper motors powered by G-code generated through Arduino. This allows the nozzle head to be moved to the precise location of the earthquake. Once the location is determined the pigment is then pumped from the containers through the tubes and extruded out the nozzle. This is the moment where precise magnitudinal data is converted into an art-form.

The Brit Speaker’s Marriage

The designers of the Josiah DAB Radio and Bluetooth Speaker call their creation the marriage of British ceramic heritage from Stoke-on-Trent with the simplicity and playfulness practiced by the Soho design team. An interesting explanation for a handmade ceramic creation! Anyways, the speakers are deigned with wit and functionality and will look great right next to my Buddha plant.

Divide And View

The Always With Three is a very innovative approach to making smartphones easier to use. Most of them are now offering a decent size screen, however the multiple tasks and features that are packed make them a tad overwhelming to use. The idea here is to have three dynamic pop-up screens that expand when used in the pop-up mode. One screen is dedicated for use as a keyboard (and joystick) while the other two navigate between media player and display. Basically an expandable device, but with innovative variations!

Everything but the TuTu

Who knew that with the introduction of gaming systems like Wii and XBox Kinect that the stereotype of lazy, couch-potato gamers would fade and be replaced with modern, home-fitness freaks?! This smart-app, called Pas de Ballet, is a great example of how interactive gaming systems can be used as supplemental training in a variety of sports and other physical activities. Using Kinect’s motion-sensing technology, it helps ambitious users perfect their skills even when a coach isn’t available. Check out the vid to see it in action!
