Hot In The Hive: Numark iDJ2

imageOne of my favorite music documentaries is Scratch, which delves into the background of the hip-hop DJ and turntablism. From clips of the famous 1984 Grammy Awards with Herbie Hancock & Grand Mixer DXT performance of “Rockit” to interviews with modern day DJ legends, Scratch covered it all. The most impressive part was seeing all the DJs show off their skills at the turntables. While definitely inspiring, I certainly don’t have the space or money for a set of turntables and stacks of records. Thank goodness modern technology is here to the rescue! The Numark iDJ2 is the first mixing station that enables you to play two tracks simultaneously from the same iPod. Use the two large wheels to scratch without harming a single vinyl and even record your own demos. Who knows, you may go from DJing your friends’ parties to hitting the big time one day. This is also a great gift idea for your musically inclined dad for Father’s Day!

Price: $474.95
Who Found It: facadeindreams was first to add the Numark iDJ2 to the Hive.

The latest 21st century profession: the digital smuggler (currently very active in Iran)

v_sign_in_teheran.jpg

The Guardian News blog reports on how Iranian people are turning into digital smugglers to spread their message, despite depleted phone and internet services.

“In days gone by, crushing a revolution was a lot easier. There were no mobile phones to co-ordinate street action or relay what was happening to the outside world. Even more importantly, there wasn’t an internet. Now it is common to hear of “internet” or even “twitter revolutions” – as Andrew Sullivan on the Atlantic has already described the current protests in Iran.

It is precisely for that reason that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appears to have – temporarily at least – shut down Facebook, Twitter, mobile phone networks and unsympathetic websites. Nevertheless, Iranians are still managing to feed out information, embracing the technology that the moderate Mir Hossein Mousavi employed during his ultimately unsuccessful election campaign.”

Ask Unclutterer: How to use Entourage to manage e-mail

Reader Bev submitted the following to Ask Unclutterer:

The company I went to work for in March has both Macs and PCs (me=graphic designer, Mac). The IT department has all of us using Entourage to keep us on a consistent system. I know that Entourage has features to help organize e-mail and create tasks, but I’m not using them yet. Help–please!

Bev, either you’re a plant, or you have the best timing in the universe. Last week, Microsoft arranged for me to have a phone call with Peter Walsh about Entourage for Mac. I’m not kidding. So, even though I’m not an Entourage user, I have a little more insight into the product than I did before the call.

For starters, Microsoft has fantastic Office 2008, which includes the program. And, as Walsh said, “If it works, great. If not, move onto what works best for you.”

However, Bev, at work you don’t have much of a choice about the program that you use. So, learn all that you can from the videos and take advantage of the planning features in the program. Peter Walsh seems to like them, and that is an organized endorsement if I ever heard one.

Thank you for submitting your question for our Ask Unclutterer column. Good luck getting your e-mail under control, and check out our other posts on e-mail management for non-program specific ideas.

And The Winner Of The Plantronics Voyager Pro Bluetooth Headset Is…

imageNot all shopping is fun and games, trust me. I don’t need to tell you about things that are fun to shop for- I do that all the time- but then are things that are completely unfun to shop for. Off the top of my head, I can think of a couple: foot cream, travel wallets, socks, headsets. All of these things fall into the category of “Things You Don’t Necessarily Want To Buy But Probably Should.” Here’s a solution: get them for free! Earlier this week we told you how you could enter to win a Plantronics Voyager Pro Bluetooth Headset, worth $99.95. Want to know if your entry was the winner? Read on to find out!

F** This: A hub for New Yorkers to address infrastructure complaints

f-this3.jpg

The Infrastructurist, a blog started in 2009 to report on American Infrastructure, recently launched F** This!, “a place for residents of America’s largest city to identify and fix problems with the local infrastructure.” The project uses software from SeeClickFix, and allows users to report on problems, watch problem areas, vote for repairs, and close tickets. The project is still in a very early stage, but we encourage you to test it out and help The Infrastructurist iron out the kinks!

Patchwork 3D (rendering software) update on the way

0patchw3d.jpg

Above are renderings done with Patchwork3D, French company Lumiscaphe’s rendering software, which has been knocking around since 2003. The forthcoming version 3.2 update promises some type of “fast rendering technology” (that’s as specific as they get) that lets users edit visual characteristics in real time and see results instantly.

So how does it work? We’ll have to wait until August’s SIGGRAPH, when 3.2 will be released, to see.

The Last iPhone, by Robert Fabricant

The Last iPhone

What if you are holding the last iPhone ever made?
What if the 3G-S looked no different than the 3G?
What if the 4G looked no different than the 3G-S and so on…?
What if all iPhones looked the same from now on?

What if it didn’t matter that the iPhone could be made 1/16″ thinner next year?
What if it didn’t matter that the iPhone could be produced in a host of different colors and metallic finishes?
What if the design could not be improved upon?
What if Apple stopped releasing new iPhones?

What if you could expand the capabilities of the iPhone infinitely through software?
What if there were a billion different apps available to download instantly?
What if you could plug-in new hardware modules to extend the capabilities even further?
What if you could send in your iPhone to have the internal components upgraded each year?

What if you subscribed to the iPhone instead of owning it?
What if the iPhone was guaranteed for life?
What if you never bought another phone?
What if Apple really decided to think differently?

(What would you be willing to pay for a Continuously-Upgraded-iPhone-for-Life? I would love to hear your answers…)
