Sun photographed in 360 degrees (compass degrees, not temperature; I’m pretty sure it’s hotter)

Exciting news: British researchers have managed to create the first 360-degree images of the sun! Turns out it looks like this:

That is unless you look at it from the other side, in which case it appears like this:

Okay, yes, fine, those are not the actual images; the real one is below.

Nat-2

Paris-inspired booties and an LED watch from a sixth-generation Berlin shoe brand
nat2-1.jpg

Known for inventing four-in-one and two-in-one zipper shoes, Munich’s Nat-2 shows a simpler side of shoe design with their new desert boot-inspired line created just for girls. The suede Marais booties, named after the Parisian neighborhood, combine classic French subtlety with a flexible fit.

At the helm of Nat-2 is creative director Sebastian Thies, whose extensive know-how is due in part to his family’s storied history as innovative shoemakers. Originally founded by “Ferdinand Fischer” in 1856, the company folded during WWII, but was resurrected by Ingeborg Thies, Sebastian’s grandfather and a Fischer by birth. The company was renamed Thies-Fischer KG in 1949 and now produces several brands alongside Nat-2.

In addition to their new streamlined shoe, Nat-2 recently introduced “Time”—a collection of plastic watches that reflect the pared-down aesthetic of the more grown-up streetwear scene. The patented 42 LED scroll system that lights the entire watch face up as each minute passes strikes a balance between the “keep it fresh, keep it classy” style that Sebastian has curated over the last three years. Perfect for the quantum computer nerd, the watch comes in several different colors including olive and purple.

The Nat-2 Time and Marais sell from the Nat-2 online shop as well as from retailers around the world.

Jakob LeBaron Dwight

A multifaceted video artist explores the communicative effects of light

by Ikechukwu Onyewuenyi

jdwight1.jpg

Mentioning an artist in the same breath as Jeremy Blake isn’t something to take lightly, but New York-based video artist, Jakob LeBaron Dwight’s current solo show at L.A.’s Papillion Institute of Arts proves the comparison holds up. With multifaceted training as philosopher, painter and videographer, his studies have converged into a body of work that’s imbued with a sense of organic experimentalism both deeply personal and with psychic overtones.

Dwight’s exploration using light as a medium is a through-line in his video installations, seizing on the “strong pathway already set up in our brains for illuminated imagery and information” to rewire our existing schema of light patterns on screen. In talking with the artist about the show and his works, it became clear that it’s not so much that Dwight is criticizing the banal utility of light in the present digital age (as he relies on the very medium), but more that he pushes people to “discover what communicative effects it may have in the realm or context of abstraction and the art experience, or even in the area of healing and psychology.”

For example, a piece like “Black Mirror” (above) provides ample space for the viewer to project their own emotions and ideas. Watching it left me in a transcendental space, reliving fond memories of my aunt’s African bazaar littered with Kente, Adire, bogolan and many more textiles. I saw myself in that visual tessellation and it felt wholesome.

Following the successful launch of his multi-disciplinary event JLD Studio at NYC’s White Box gallery space last year, his current show positions his conceptually palliative video work as a novel way to anticipate the function of light in society.

The solo exhibit is on view through 27 February 2010 at Papillion Institute of Art.

Wagner Skis

Supreme custom fits for the extreme skier
wagnerskis1.jpg

In a former gas station, now powered entirely by wind and sun, Pete Wagner and his team create custom skis one pair at a time. Located just outside Telluride, CO, Wagner has been quietly carving out a name for themselves among enthusiasts and professionals alike with their Skier DNA application, a survey ensuring a complete custom fit geared for your ski style and body shape.

To guarantee even greater accuracy, Wagner recently recruited the technology experts at Advanced Racing Computers, a Park City, UT-based firm that created the vLink—a performance measurement tool for ski racers. When attached to a pair of Wagner skis, the vLinks serve as tiny computers recording 6,500 frames per second along X, Y and Z axes, analyzing every aspect of a skier’s form. Storing up to 99 runs of in-depth data, that information is then transmitted wirelessly or downloaded later for Wagner to assess. Combined with the Skier DNA survey, this meticulous evaluation allows Wagner to craft an utterly personal pair of skis adjusted down to details like tail shapes and flex pattern.

wagner-vlink2.jpg

Backed by a wide selection of colors, veneers, artist-designed top graphics or the ability to design your own, Wagner is both a brand dedicated to customization and also stands on its own as an expert ski-maker. Currently the Wagner skis kitted with vLinks sell from the Surefoot store in Deer Valley, Colorado. Prices vary.
